New Arcadia church nears completion
By Kri Knutson Lee Newspapers

.
ARCADIA, Wis. The members of Bethel Lutheran Church come together each Sunday to worship in a small room. The site is fine for the 80 or so members of the congregation unless they all decide to show up.

“We can seat about 50 comfortably,” said the Rev. Nathan Strutz, pastor of the church. “After that, we’re kind of squishing it.”
That won’t be a problem for long. The church is building a new 7,000-square-foot home off Hwy. 93 in Arcadia that will hold about 200 people. It’s the first new church built in Arcadia since 1910, Strutz said.

Strutz is leaving the church’s official grand opening in the Lord’s hands, but people who want a sneak peek can come to an open house this evening.

The Arcadia church is an offshoot of Bethel Lutheran Church in Galesville, Wis., where Strutz also serves as pastor. About a dozen members who used to drive to Galesville formed the Arcadia church in 2001.

The church received a $50,000 grant toward the new building from the La Crosse-based Antioch Foundation. An anonymous donor gave $650,000. The contributions have helped the project go beyond the basics, allowing for a bell tower, stained glass windows and carport.

“We’ve had one blessing after another,” Strutz said.

Church member Laverne Putz, 85, has come to the site every day to help and watch the church’s transformation.

“It’ll be different, that’s for sure,” Putz said.

He’s also enjoyed working with the Builders for Christ, a volunteer workforce helping to build the church. The volunteers come from all over the country, on a mission to help build churches, schools and nurseries for members of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

The group started with about seven members in 1991 and has grown to more than 300. The average age is about 72.

Martin Leyrer, 77, and wife Rose came from Muskegon, Mich., on June 13 and won’t be leaving until Sept. 9. The couple has helped on 32 church projects around the country.

Martin Leyrer has seen struggling congregations holding Sunday school in boiler rooms and hallways, and church services in high school gymnasiums and storefronts.

“We love our Lord,” Martin Leyrer said. “It’s such a grand opportunity to serve him in this way.”

Leyrer was a civil engineer and public works director and retired seven years ago.

“I’m confident that if I would have sat around in a rocking chair after I retired, I wouldn’t be here today,” Leyrer said. “You need mental and physical activity. Serving the Lord doesn’t hurt, either.”

Lunch is their pay. Leyrer found Tuesday’s wages of lasagna with sliced potatoes especially tasty. He and his fellow volunteers measure each project by how much weight they gain. They estimate Arcadia will be a 15-pounder.

His wife reminds him to take it easy, but he shows no signs of stopping, although he has sworn off ladders.

“After two concussions, three cracked ribs and a shoulder dislocation,” Lehrer said, “I think I’ll stay on the ground.”

The person that is always named in connection with this Antioch Foundation in Lacrosse, Wisconsin is Donald P Zietlow. He is the President and CEO of Kwik Trip. Kwik Trip is all over Wisconsin and Minnesota, perhaps elsewhere too). They are gas stations/convenience stores/car washes and are thriving. It just so happens that Matt Doebler served in Wisconsin Rapids prior to going to his rock 'n roll mission in Texas. The Antioch Foundation is in the WELS Western Wisconsin District (where Matt was) and gave grants in that area. So Matt would be familiar with that name.

Practical Ideas for Birds and Blooms

Cherry tomatoes are especially good at volunteering. Eat four, toss one.

Slight changes can make a difference in enjoying birds and having better garden production.

I bought a few pounds of suet from the meat market in the fall and bagged it all in mesh bags, far less expensive than little metal cages with $1 suet cakes in them. I had six bags hanging in four locations, on trees and the bird feeder.

Business was slow at first, since birds are wary of new feeders, but now we have morning birds singing and chortling happily as they enjoy breakfast near the window, on the trees, and on the ground.

I added a folly--a useless garden item to the feeding plan--an old filing cabinet made from composite wood, with a pull-out drawer. Seed lands at various levels, with the drawer pulled out. The squirrels jump in the drawer and pop out to eat each seed (wary of foes and competitive squirrels). It is fun to watch, whether for parents, grandparents, or grandchildren. Our helper watched and laughed at the sight. I placed it between two trees, an area where nothing grows. Suet hangs on those trees and the corn feeder is placed on one, used now by the starlings. Squirrels want fresh corn only, not a processed corn cob.

Mulchis always good for feeding birds in the garden, who manage the insect and grub population. A pulled or cut weed can be added on top of the mulch to add to the organic matter. I would rather cut a big, juicy weed at the base, let its root rot into the soil, and place the leafy weed remains on the mulch or in the compost. Pigweed is good for that, and the flowers and fruit are interesting to watch form.

Pigweed will grow anywhere, so people despise it. That is all the more reason to let some grow. I am not keen on weeds that invade through the root system or seed at apocalyptic rates (fever few). But tall weeds  like goosefoot are good for the soil and good to eat.

A mass of weeds, like a crabgrass patch, can be turned into compost by laying on newspapers and wood mulch. Another solution is to cover them first with a newspaper layer, then straw bales for a straw bale gardening areas (potatoes and strawberries).

Put down the flamethrower and the RoundUp - use or eat the weeds. Allowing some tall weed growth is good for birds perching, for bird cover, and for food. As someone noted in a gardening book, taproot weeds mine the minerals from deeper in the soil, so they add to the root zone of the plants.

Weeds Are Guardians of the Soil. You laugh? The book now sells for $350 on Amazon. Look it up.

Sticks fall from trees all year around. I keep some of them in a pile for the birds to enjoy. The sticks either harbor or attract insects so they are a good place to rest and eat. I toss sunflower seeds among the sticks to create a habit of sitting there for a snack.

I first saw branches used this way in Midland, when I piled branches near the road to be picked up. Birds rested and chirped in them, feeling safe for days - even while sitting near road and sidewalk traffic.

Birds like to perch while looking for food and preening feathers, so anything above ground level is good for that - sunflower remains, a stick pile, a fence, and tall weeds.

Water pans- small pans near the sprinklers or soaker hoses will catch water for bird baths. Birds can find their own food, but water is a necessity that draws them all summer, keeping them in the winter when the water kept thawed. We did not even have frost on the car parked outside, most of the winter, so this was not an issue. In Midland, a birdbath warmer was the best investment ever for birds in the winter. We created a bird spa, watching them line up for their winter baths.

Everything organic - once people realize the value of mulch and compost, they collect as much as possible for rich soil. The Queen of England grows organically in her private garden. The great rose gardens of America fertilize organically because the roses grow better that way.

Eliminating poisons from the garden will increase life and suppress unwanted guests by turning them into food. If someone uses herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides, the normal increase of counter-measures will be killed or kept away by the toxins.

Sow in abundance, reap in abundance. I recommend buying large packets of seed, by the pound if possible. We ran out of pea seeds. I could have used another two large packets. We had enough sunflower seeds because I buy those by the 40 pound bag.

2 Corinthians 9
But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
(As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)
11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.

Those who buy large amounts of seed will have enough to share with others, spreading the joy and value of gardens, saving money and teaching others about Creation.

The "worst planting" in one that never grows to maturity, but even that one can be great for the soil. Many people start a bush bean crop before winter. They grow up, grown nitrogen gathering roots downward, and freeze in place. The soil is richer because they began to grow before winter.

Likewise, an entire spinach or garlic crop can be started in the fall, and harvested in the spring.

Zank backed Ski for CRM and a new call.
The zombies of his district made him DP when Doug's flinty heart wore out.
For lesser crimes than Ski's, a WELS principal is facing 20 years and a big fine.
What's worse, sexting a grizzled cop ( as the WELS principal did)
or sexting and showing graphic porn photo to a lady staffer (as Ski did)?
Remember - SP Mark Schroeder worked the deal to give Ski a new call.

Is there a WELS Sermon Clearinghouse?

Is there a WELS Sermon
Clearinghouse?
Is there a central clearinghouse within the WELS for pastors to share their sermons with one another? How would you feel if your pastor either used or shared his sermon series with another pastor? Can other pastors access the information, if they wanted to share sermons or use one, if so how do they do it?

** Update Notice that we received via email which answers these questions:

From Pastor Ben's Blog in Muskego
July 5, 2014
Sermon Series Planning – This upcoming week I’ll be getting away a couple days with the pastors from St Paul’s in Muskego to plan our next year’s worth of sermon series. It’s a blessing to work together with other creative pastors to develop series that are biblical, relevant, and helpful to you. Did you know that over thirty pastors across our synod receive the resources that we create and many of them regularly use them in their churches? Just this week I talked for an hour on the phone with a mission church pastor from South Carolina who had heard about our sermon series and who asked me to include him on our distribution list?

So if you have any ideas or suggestions for a sermon series, I gladly welcome your input. Books of the Bible, questions, topics, relevant life issues, various Bible teachings, issues raised by various books or people in our world...these are all possibilities. Any thoughts? Feel free to email or text me. I will have access to the internet while away as well.

"Profile" Sermon Series
 - Spans more than one district; so it's not simply neighboring pastors sharing.
 - All were preached this last January; so they all had them at the same time.
 - Almost all had same description; so that was provided somehow
 - How do seven churches have the same sermon series at the same time otherwise?

St. Paul's Lutheran Church - Muskego, WI

Many of us today have online social networks where we create and work to maintain our profile. Our goal is to present an image of ourselves that we want other people to see. In Colossians, Paul presents a profile that has the power to change our lives completely. Paul presents Jesus, the uncreated Creator of all things, the image of the invisible God, the firstborn from the dead. The better we understand Jesus’ profile, the better we’ll understand who we really are in Christ. In this series we’re going to work through Paul’s letter to the Colossians. We’re going to see how Jesus truly is our all in all and explore how this truth impacts our lives.

Parables That Go Against the Flow: "The Parable of the Two Sons"
Sermon Text:  Matthew 21:28-32
It’s hard to swallow Jesus’ teaching that many who have been in the church all their lives are spiritually lost and they don’t even know it. Even more difficult to accept is that many whom those in the church would look down on because of their lifestyle are really God’s true children.

God’s Love—Unstoppable! Sermon Series

St Paul's Lutheran - Muskego, WI
We have great respect for people who have a dogged determination, who set their minds to accomplish something great and won’t allow anyone or anything get in their way. Yet, even the most unwavering grit and fortitude we see depicted in the heroes on the movie screen pales in comparison to the resolve God has to love us and rescue us from our sin. We see this resolve in the manger on Christmas Eve, as the Creator of heaven and earth, determined to free this world from its slavery to sin, takes on human flesh and blood and enters the world he created. Yet, Satan was also determined—to counter God’s plan in any and every way possible. And it’s in this all out battle of the wills that we clearly see who truly is the greatest. In the end, absolutely nothing is going to be able to stop God’s love. (from 2010)

    1. Thank you for that information! We just received some more information also via email that I'm going to get updated on the original post also.

  2. I have mixed feelings about sermon sharing. I am grateful that more are developed in house rather than notes taken from LifeChurch or other source that in not in fellowship, if that is the case. What is exactly written and developed and shared- graphics, powerpoint, semon notes and bulletpoints? What is the original source for the idea? Are they getting inspiration from sermoncentral or LifeChurch and swapping out a few things so that it is hard to find the "plagiarism"?

It is my understanding that common practice and what had been taught in the seminary was to read the sermon text and study it in the original language then develop the sermon. Sure a pastor might get inspiration from another WELS pastor, a commentary or Luther's sermons on the same text but since the lectionary is repeated every so often a pastor often highlights a different point in the text being preached on. So what is the sermon writing process taught at the seminary?

Now a pastor can receive a canned sermon (or notes)... make a few adjustments and there you go? That doesn't seem like a good practice either. Are all the pastors upfront with the congregation that the sermon series was created elsewhere? How word for word are the sermons? Most congregants would assume their pastor was creating and writing their own sermons and that's what he went to the seminary to learn how to do. I know an older couple that was so impressed by the pastor's creativity with the sermon series topics but little did they know that most were from an online source or someone that the church had paid to write them. Are pastor's being deceitful to their own members?

  4. Just some free flowing thoughts on the subject.

I don't believe it would be acceptable to use a sermon or sermon series if it came from a Non-Confessional Lutheran source.

Ethically if you are using the Muskego Sermon Series should you disclose your source? I would think yes that is the proper thing to do, even if you made numerous modifications to the sermon, if you lifted the base from somewhere else then credit should be given.

I also question the wisdom of a Sermon Series. How do you fit a series into the traditional church year lectionary? It seems as if we are copying from the Evangelicals who always seem to have this or that sermon series going on.

When I think of a number of congregation's using the same series my mind wanders to the Jehovah's Witnesses where the same message is read at every hall on meeting night.

As an additional question regarding how things work. We have Stewardship Sundays for example. Four Sundays set aside throughout the year stressing Stewardship with an overarching theme that the four sermons tie to. Is the theme and the individual Sunday themes set by Synod? If so do they provide the sermon then as well? How does that work typically?

Because WELS called workers are mostly a bunch of Richards and this is what happens when a person calls out a called worker and then vice versa.

Private closed meeting with a buddy clergy and yesmen Elders presiding over matter. (The kangaroo court). The called worker describes what they did with light positive words and omits key details. The called worker describes what the other person did with exaggerated harsh sounding negative words. The buddy Pastor and/or yesmen Elders only takes the called workers story into account. Then the get lost script.

Called worker didn't do anything wrong according to scripture. (Make the person think they are crazy). BUT if you talk about it at all, then you are in violation of the 8th commandment. (Guilt trip) and be prepared for the consequences. (Fear of some unknown punishment)
Then some ad lib blah, blah, blah judgment against the layperson speaking up using vague terminology for sins. And ended with "forgive as Christ forgave you."

This is what happens when a called worker calls out a layperson.

You did XYZ wrong. You cannot take communion or be in fellowship with the WELS until you agree that you did XYZ wrong. Then pay restitution to the called worker for the rest of your life by doing what ever he/she commands. Also note that documented evidence is not required for the called worker but it is for the layperson. This happens to some called workers lower on the totem pole too who speak up.

  2. What I have experienced and others have experienced and what just about everyone I have talked to brings up on their own is "...You better be careful or you'll be shunned." or some other close cousin to the word "shunned". Literally everyone I have ever discussed something controversial with has said something along those lines and then told some story of how it happened to them or someone they knew.

Is that part of Seminary training or what?

    Eine arme Schaf
  3. Seminary training does not prepare future pastors for the reality of problems and conflict during their calls. Seminary training leads future pastors to believe that they will be respected and deferred to whenever they engage in their Word & Sacrament ministry. Seminary training is often most successfully completed by men who do not necessarily have the requisite gifts for working with other people. Seminary training is, in the final analysis, graduate level theological instruction, not pastoral formation, which can only begin to occur after leave seminary.
  4. Mr. Malach,

No doubt what you say is true. Yet it seems odd that every lay person seems to have had the same experience. Disagree with the pastor's agenda or take a position that is not popular with or in conformity with WELS central or might be slightly out of step within your church and especially if you say it where others may hear it. What happens - you are shunned, ostracized, ignored etc. It just seems odd that everyone has had or knows of someone who has had the same experience. Whatever the reason for it, it comes across as unloving, uncaring and frankly has the faint odor of either a spoiled child pouting or of a bully.

Surely some Pastors come out of Seminary with proper manners and some people skills?

Read about the WELS Sermon Factories

The lazy professors at Mequon - WELS - encourage students to plagiarize, one of the lessons they easily learn.

A pastor is supposed to preach sermons based on his own Biblical studies. If he cannot do that, he is not apt to teach - or inept - as many of his professors are.

The belly-bursters are always looking for ways to get money without earning it. They also love grants from other people's money, which Jeske Church and Changer Rangers favor, elbowing anyone else out of the way.

Do these pastors admit, "Most of this sermon was written by someone else"? Tim Glende and his drinking buddy Ski both denied it and excommunicated a lawyer for telling the truth about their fraud.

If they do not post that announcement in each bulletin. they are frauds and liars, collecting money for another person's work.

Does anyone wonder why their sermons are so dead and lifeless? Shouting, screaming, and wearing costumes will not make up for the sterility of using another person's words.

Nothing is funnier--or more pathetic--than a so-called preacher walking around the stage with his electronic notebook in hand, reading the script he downloaded but never memorized.

WELS is the plagiarism synod, and the former DP of the Anything Goes District defends it.

When I was reading up on Jeff Gunn, DP Buchholz' favorite emergent phony, I was struck by how his websty content paralleled Rick Warren's. Maybe he did not copy Rick Warren, but another plagiarist. It simply was not possible for him to write down the same words, the same Biblical passages, and be original. Why no citations?

Rev. Dr. Matthew Becker, LCMS Clergyman. Exonerated.

January 22nd, 2015Post by
concordia-shipwreckIt came out during the North Dakota District Convention that the case against Rev. Dr. Matthew Becker, an LCMS clergyman who teaches at Valparaiso University has ended with the result that he was exonerated of any charge of false teaching.
President Harrison informed the District Convention of the results.  He and his administration have been working hard on the Becker case for some time (since taking office).  The CTCR has also been working on the dissents that Dr. Becker filed (dissenting to the Synod’s stance on women’s ordination and evolution).  In the end, the process has failed to discipline one of the most flagrant dissenters to official LCMS doctrine.
A committee formed by the Dispute Resolution Process has now exonerated him.  The District President of the Northwest District (where Dr. Becker holds membership) has refused to take action against him.  President Harrison has gone on record as speaking against this and expressing his own frustration that he has run out of options as Synod President to discipline him.  The Synod’s legal documents and opinions forbid the Synod President from dealing with an individual member (CCM ruling after Newtown made sure of that).
The chief remaining action is to of course report it to the 2016 Convention of the LCMS and ask for the Convention to take action.
As for me, the Becker case has been a sort of litmus test on how the LCMS can handle things with regards to false doctrine.  This is sad, but shows how utterly broken the Synod is to handle even the most open and shut cases.  Why has FiveTwo not been taken up the Dispute Resolution Process – this is why.
The Synod in Convention can choose to do nothing.  The Synod will then become an umbrella overarching various theologies, one true, many false (which it apparently already is).  This of course does not glorify God or hallow His Name.
The Synod in Convention needs to realize that the mechanism which it has to deal with these issues is utterly broken.
Pray for those involved.  Dr. Becker, evolution and women’s ordination has won in LCMS Inc.’s court.  Lord have mercy.
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.   – James 3:1
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.  – 2 Peter 2:1-3

Anonymous is so wise, so wonderful -
why does he not share his name?

http://welsdocument.blogspot.com/2015/01/is-there-wels-sermon-clearinghouse.html

I am tremendously disappointed in this blog site. I thought you would be sharing ideas and events in other WELS congregations. Instead, you are simply regurgitating the complaints and gripes that have been expressed on other sites. Some of those no longer exist. [GJ - And why is that, anon? Were they forced to shut down by threats from those who patiently use God's Word to cover up for felons, drunks, adulterers, and peculators?]

You are addressing the very same things that Greg Jackson puts on his site, Ichabod. I think of WELS Documented now as no different than his, except you don't have the goofy insane pictures.

And then the resident WELS Romanizing pastor, Steve Spencer, who calls himself "Father," shows up on this site, too, like he has on all the others. I'm just waiting for you to deny universal objective justification

What you and others are doing is simple: you are impatient with the means God's Word gives us to resolve problems. You are impatient with the procedures we have established in the WELS to resolve issues. So you are trying to make an end run and deal with these matters on your own. Good-bye, so-long, auf Wiedershehen (sic), farewell.

WELS Synodicat demonstrates how to instill obedience and humility in pastors.

http://welsdocument.blogspot.com/2015/01/among-hidden-fear-of-speaking-out.html?showComment=1421991085104

I spoke out once and I received a forced resignation during my vicar year. I would not marry a couple that my bishop asked me to marry. He asked me to lie and forge his signature on the marriage license (he was going on vacation the week of the wedding). The next thing I know I was accused of dividing the congregation, undermining his authority, not agreeing with church fathers, changing sermons in the pulpit, the list goes on.

After a year of emails, calls, and meeting, I was told that I did not possess the qualifications to serve in the pastoral ministry. I asked for specifics and i was told to consider 1 Timothy 3 and the Ten Commandments. I tried attending Bethany Lutheran Seminary but was not allowed to attend because the President of Bethany Lutheran Seminary did not receive a recommendation from WLS... I asked him he if had received any reasons as to why I was not suitable for the ministry. He told me the answer he received was "unknown reasons."
I even had MLC professors ask WLS professors as to why I was not allowed back. The answers they received, "they didn't know."
Which contradicts the emails I received which said the faculty discussed my future ability to attend WLS and said that I was not qualified.

If you ask i can forward the emails to anyone who wishes. My former classmates have not even talked to me since the incident. My former Pastor wouldn't even ask why I wasn't allowed back to continue my studies but told me to accept the answers from the seminary since they were far wiser men than he.

So I left the WELS. Yep, I'm was tired of getting the runaround for doing the right thing so I left. I'm much happier now, I will never trust another Pastor in my lifetime but that's me and my situation.

I have church services right here in my living room with my family and I pray that I can teach my daughter not only what Jesus has done for us but to have the courage to do the right thing when the situation comes.
---
Or try asking your called worker wife to explain what is going on between her and the Pastor and see what happens. A called worker wife who was already caught cheating & lying threw her teeth about it twice. And one of those incidences resulted in a forced resignation from a previous call for cheating with a Pastor only because I had documented evidence. Suddenly, she claims to be the lifelong victim of abuse. And factor that her daddy works at synod headquarters and her brother is the principal at the church/school. And her brother straight faced told me when I was going to divorce her... "God hates divorce,""And he personally hates seeing broken homes on campus." And I was already pre-judged for being in violation of the 8th commandment by the CP for doing exactly what I am doing now. You want documentation? I have plenty. You want names? I would be more than willing to provide them.

GJ - These are but indications of the normal conduct of abusive WELS pastors. I could list many more, but people fear retaliation against their family members or complete abandonment by their families. WELS leaders have no trouble initiating whisper campaigns against anyone who crosses them. Because the clergy are so cowardly, they shrink back or even join with the Slander Machine managed by the Love Shack. It is so much fun to say, "I hear that..."

They do not like my signed articles and use guilt by association with anyone who employs more than a dozen brain cells at once. But what does the Synod President do? He has a "confidential conversation" and makes the other party swear never to reveal a word. What a convenient way to poison the well.

It goes back to CFW Walther, their hero. He blamed Martin Stephan's adultery on Mrs. Stephan. He broke with Loehe, perhaps because Loehe developed healthy strong leaders for America rather than pimping a bevy of young girls for a lusty, diseased bishop. The victors write the history, but Walther wanted no history written at all - ever wonder why?

Birds and Squirrels Love Cracked Corn - Hydroscopic Water

$

I bought cracked corn at the hardware store, a better buy than a bag of field corn ears. All the birds and the squirrels love cracked corn. I saw cardinals and blue jays on the ground for corn, so I decided to get that instead of sunflower seeds.

This time I added food to the wheelbarrow, as well as the filing cabinet folly and the ground near the trees.

The energy of the sun and the wealth of the soil
are given back to God's creatures in the yard.
I am not up with the birds. I am up before the birds. They seem to take their time to warm up and get breakfast. We had a light frost, and that may affect their need to eat. Why not stay warm in bed until the sun is really up?

I was grading essays before this. At 8:30 AM I am posting and drinking fresh coffee. I open the window to hear the birds burbling as they enjoy their food. The starlings are hanging from the suet and eating most of the day. Nothing lasts so long as suet in a mesh bag.

I looked out to see a chickadee grab a sunflower seed from the bird feeder. Doves and the squirrel are eating the cracked corn. The cold weather includes groups of male cardinals eating together. Later they will woo a mate and pair off for nests and territories. Then the male cardinals will get very jealous of the males they see in reflections here and there.

Blue jays eat from bird feeders on a pole, but they are happy to eat corn from the ground, too.

Later Today - Extending the Soaker Aqueduct
All my soaker hoses on the dead tree were damaged on the end, so I bought an extension for the aqueduct on the fence.

I will run the next 50 feet of soaker hose on the ground, to water the sunflower seeds I just planted and the Butterfly Bushes waiting to break dormancy. Watering settles the soil around newly planted seed and increases the rate of decomposition for the mulch.

I have never found dry mulch on top of the soil. It must be the way mulch captures and holds the moisture bound up in the soil. Each soil particle has a film of hydroscopic wateraround it. Only baking the soil will make the water go away. That adds up to a lot of water, and a good reason the soil creatures can thrive in an ocean of "dry" ingredients like sand and clay. The soil particles are not dry at all but coated to provide channels for transportation and food. Bacteria and slugs travel on slime, so that water matters especially to them. Humus, soil creatures, and earthworm casts also contribute to soil moisture.

Over 60,000 kinds of protozoa are known and, contrary to any residual youthful hope you may have that they only live in pond water, a majority of them live in the soil; however, all do require moisture to lead an active life .

Lewis, Wayne; Lowenfels, Jeff;  (2010-09-10). Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition (Kindle Locations 1123-1125). Timber Press. Kindle Edition.

Protozoa need moisture to live, travel, and reproduce, and hydroscopic water— that thin film of water left on the surfaces of soil particles and aggregates— provides it, under normal soil conditions. If things dry up, however, most protozoa stop feeding and dividing and go dormant, encasing themselves in a cyst.

Lewis, Wayne; Lowenfels, Jeff; (2010-09-10). Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition (Kindle Locations 1169-1171). Timber Press. Kindle Edition.

As I mentioned before, a few days of sun and wind dried out a row of newspapers and sent them flying around the yard. We used wood mulch to pin them down again, since the backyard leaves abandoned their post and frolicked in the wind. Where the leaves are wet and packed, a bit slimy, they weigh down newspapers and promote soil creature population growth.

Newspapers are thin sponges that hold and give up moisture easily; the newspapers breathe and do not promote bad decay in the soil. That is why plastic "weed barriers" are terrible and never work well. Weeds pop through them and get tangled up in the mess.

Hydroscopic water is a thinner film of water, only a few molecules thick, which, like capillary water, is attached to extremely small soil particles by virtue of electrical properties . This film is so thin that the bonds between water molecules and soil particles are concentrated and extremely hard to break.

Roots cannot absorb it, therefore, but this film of water is critical to the ability of many microbes to live and travel. Even when conditions are dry, the soil particulate surface holds some hydroscopic water; it is impossible to remove it from soil without applying lots of heat and actually boiling it off. Just about half the pore spaces in good soil are filled with water. The other half are filled with air.

Water movement pushes stale air out and sucks in air from the surface, so adding water means an exchange of air occurs, which is important . If a healthy soil food web is in place, the metabolic activity of soil organisms uses the oxygen and creates carbon dioxide.

Lewis, Wayne;  Lowenfels, Jeff; (2010-09-10). Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition (Kindle Locations 374-381). Timber Press. Kindle Edition.

Therefore, if God had not designed soil to hold this film of water--or water to cling to soil particles-- most of the life in soil would suffer and die back, with plants suffering with them. Water obeys the conditions placed upon it at Creation, and those rules provide for the entire population of life, from the smallest microbes to man, the epitome of everything on earth.

Suspended Blogs Moved Down the List on the Left Margin

I did not want to get rid of suspended blogs that have a lot of good material on them, so I made up a separate list, alphabetical, and moved it down the line on the left. Thus I have active blogs in the upper left and suspended ones lower down.

The active blogs that I enjoy reading are back at the top. I find the list convenient for my morning reading, and I enjoy staying at the top by posting often.

"You stupid mule. I am going to beat your ascii."

WELS killed off Issues in WELS and chased away the writers for Bailing Water, three of them, as I recall. DPs like John Seifert organized death squads to get everyone off the list at the Intrepid Lutherans blog.

In contrast, anything related to Church and Change, the Jeske Mob, or Fuller Seminary is rewarded, promoted, funded, and praised by the "orthodox, confessional Lutheran" sect called WELS. Good think y'all voted for Mark Schroeder, to clean up the messes caused by Mischke and Gurgle. He is running again, on the Church and Change ticket, because they lub, lub, lub him.

John Lawrenz and Steve Witte - Church and Change founders,
now Asian seminary pest-presidents.
John was howling about everything had to change
when Mark Jeske was still on a trike.

Lawrenz, like John Brug, has an Old Testament PhD but neither one has a grasp of the efficacy of the Word taught so clearly in the Old Testament.

Creation took place through the Word, and Isaiah 55 teaches how everything happens through the Holy Spirit through the Word.

Witte has a drive-by DMin from Gordon Conwell, a joke upon a joke. Both of them have changed WELS for the worse, and they are proud of it.

We lub it."

WELS, Missouri, and the Little Sect Model the Left Wing - Political Agenda Disguised as Education

Mark Jeske makes at least $170,000 to serve on the Thrivent Board,
so he can fund his favorite Left-wing cause, himself.

Unless you are blind or blind-drunk, you have realized that the entire public education system is designed to promote the agenda of the extreme Left.

Wherever you turn, the educational courses are not much different from life in Mao's China. Medical education is pro-abortion.

Social work is pro-abortion.

Charities like United Way are pro-abortion.

Universities are pro-abortion.

ObamaCare funds abortion.

Long before ObamaCare, ELCA's health insurance paid for abortion on demand - for their clergy, bishops, professors, and teachers. WELS and Missouri said - "No problem. We can work together."

Race for the Cure funds Planned Parenthood.

Every time you wipe cake crumbs off your mouth with "free" Thrivent napkins, you are endorsing and promoting the pro-abortion agenda of that insurance business. They fund Planned Parenthood too.

Look at any other issue and the Left's position on it - you will find that all educational courses in all aspects of America are slanted toward one viewpoint alone, condemning anything else.

The latest super-educational approach, successful beyond all hope, is diversity training - well, selective diversity training. It has nothing to do with race, gender, or the disabled. It is all about enforcing a quota system that serves the Left, funds the Left, leverages the Left.

WELS and Missouri, and their pipsqueak relations have done the same thing.

Everything is apostasy education. Borrow $80,000 to attend a synodical college - to learn classical Lutheran doctrine and academic content? Oh no. To learn how to glide along the apostate death spiral and profit from it.

Borrow $100,000 for an LCMS seminary degree. Ditto. Learn how to become anti-Lutheran, anti-Christian, in love with Fuller or the Church of Rome. For the weak, Eastern Orthodoxy is an alternative.

Find out how to make fun of the English version of Luther's Bible - the KJV - and promote various Calvinistic, feminist, demonic paraphrases.

Quit whining and give up on the established synods. It is all over.

Jon Buchholz bailed on the Jeske fund-raiser, then endorsed it.

Maynard G. Krebs Gardening Buying Seeds - There Is Still Time

On the Dobie Gillis Show - "Work?!"

Today a  reader asked about seeds. Did I use seed tape?

My approach to gardening is to avoid as much work as possible, especially when the work is completely unnecessary or unproductive.

Soil should not be moved around unless necessary. The colonies of soil creatures, from fungi to earthworms, do better when their established networks are kept mostly intact.

We began spring preparations by laying down Jackson Mulch wherever planting areas were anticipated. Newspaper kept arriving, so I kept buying shredded wood mulch.

To plant edible pod peas, we pulled back the mulch a bit, threw in loose peas, and covered the area with some mushroom compost - sanitized horse manure, really like rich soil. Some of you city-slickers will never make it in gardening, with those wrinkled noses.

We pushed some mulch back a bit and turned on the soaker hose aqueduct along the fence top. That took all of 10 minutes, to plant two fat packages of pea seeds. I ordered more and will run them back to where the fence turns a corner, about 80 feet of free supports for pea vines.

Seed tapes are expensive and not needed, unless we want plants to grow up like soldiers on a parade field. Instead, wide rows are better for more production and suppression of weeds. If the soil is disturbed weeds can grow, but the weeds will not grow where productive plants shadow the soil.

As Ruth Stout observed, some weeds grow on top of mulch or grow through mulch. Those weeds can be pulled and placed on top of the mulch. They have the nitrogen and moisture content that help the soil. Plants mine minerals and move them around when composting and mulching.

When seeds pop up through mulch, they have instant protection against weather extremes, wind and rain erosion. The mulch feeds the microbes that make soil fertile, while favoring earthworms, the apex of soil generation. Worm food equals worm casts (poop), and worm casts mean the best soil. Mulch is worm food.

We already have our fertilizer (Jackson Mulch) in place, and birds rummaging through the mulch will prey upon the insects and grubs that damage crops.

The difference with a new rose garden is that we will plant the roses in the lawn, then surround the plants with Jackson Mulch, turning the lawn into instant compost. So much less work! My parents would look at my short-cuts, and say "You are so lazy!" When I carried 100 pounds of shortening down the basement stairs at the bakery, instead of 50 pounds, that was so-o-o-o lazy. It saved trips.

My grandfather invented things, so I look at gardening as a way to save labor, which all inventions do. I made tons of compost in piles and wheelbarrowd them around the yard. Like Edison before the light bulb, trimming lamp wicks, I said, "There has to be a better way."

I like having a compost pile, because they is the convenient deposit place for all kinds of rotting organic matter. We had a whole layer of banana peels and coffee grounds on top, then our helper added a layer of leaves to make room for the peas. The sycamore leaves refused to rot, so they piled up in the corner of the fence. Maple leaves are far more cooperative, staying in place and added to the Jackson Mulch.

So someone can generate tons of mulch without hauling it up and down, around the yard on soft soil, in a weak, cheap wheelbarrow. Of course, the big construction wheelbarrows haul more and create even more work per foot. Spring soil is not the best pathway for moviing materials.

Scarlet runner beans are relatively rare and hard to find late in the spring.
Hummingbirds love their flowers.

Buying Seeds
Drugstores and hardware stores are not the best places to buy seed. I will get tomato plants at Walmart and Lowe's. Tomatoes are weed-like, ready to grow and fruit in the bright sun. I took some half-dead leftovers from Walmart, late in the season, and grew some grew tomatoes, even though they were growing in the crabgrass of the sunny garden (no newspaper under the mulch).

Bargain seeds, leftover seeds - no problem. That is late in the season. It is fun to experiment with inexpensive seed.

I have some definite plans for seed in the garden, so I buy from Burpee's website. They have a great system for ordering in each category.

If I cannot find an odd seed, like Scarlet Runner beans, I look it up on Amazon. They have the unusual items that the big companies no longer carry.

When I buy praying mantis egg cases, I will get them from Amazon, the only place I have found them this year. By that I mean they are not in the big seed catalogs, where I used to find them...and scarlet runner beans.

By sticking to one company overall, I get emails about specials and sales. That works well for roses, too.

I never regret buying too much seed, because someone can use the seed. Kids love to try gardening. I could have used more pea seeds, so I ordered a big packet in addition. Someone else will grow them. Mr. Gardener will probably be buying seed, so we can do some swapping.

Peas will be growing when asparagus roots arrive. We will just plant them along the fence, giving up a few pea plants in the process. The pea roots will help feed the asparagus.

Keep your grandkids out of trouble - teach them gardening skills.

Two WELS Pastors and Four Meritless Lawsuits

June 11, 2014

WELS logo
Recently, two WELS Pastors, Tim Glende and James Skorzewski, and two of their staff members filed four almost identical lawsuits against a WELS layman, Jonathan Donnan, a former member of their congregation.  Specifically, they asked a secular court to issue four restraining orders, ordering Jonathan Donnan to stop “harassing” them.
In the courthouse lobby before the first case was heard, a local attorney who handles a lot of cases in that court (and who had absolutely no connection to this case) looked at the court’s calender, and said, “When you see four restraining order petitions against one person, then usually that person did something extremely bad, or it’s a bunch of bullies ganging up on someone.”  Jonathan’s wife, Mara, who was sitting nearby, piped up and said, “It’s the second one.  It’s a bunch of bullies ganging up on someone.”
History
According to Jonathan Donnan’s wife, Mara, Pastor Skorzewski said numerous sexually inappropriate things to her over the course of months, and on at least one occasion, Pastor Glende also joined in with this disgusting behavior.  (At the time, Mara was a member of The CORE, a WELS church, and also Pastor Skorzewski’s executive assistant).
After a long ordeal involving the Circuit Pastor, District President, and even the Synod President, Pastor Skorzewski finally resigned.  However, Skorzewski almost immediately requested CRM status.  (CRM means that a man is deemed to be blameless, above reproach, and qualified to receive a call as a pastor).
Jonathan did not think the man who behaved so inappropriately toward his wife should become a pastor again, and he thought the WELS pastors from the district who would be asked to comment on Skorzewski’s CRM status should have more information.  So he wrote a letter to the pastors of the Northern Wisconsin District giving them information about Pastors Skorzewski’s and Glende’s behavior toward his wife.  This letter was signed by Jonathan, his wife Mara, and also concerned WELS pastors Lidtke and Suhr.
Having received comments regarding Skorzewski’s potential CRM status from other WELS pastors, District President Engelbrecht then also sought comments specifically from the membership of St. Peter & The CORE, which had been Skorzewski’s congregation before he resigned.  To this end, an informational meeting was scheduled at The CORE for August 13, 2013.
At the beginning of the meeting, Pastor Glende said the purpose of the meeting was so that the congregation could seek direction and make decisions about the ministry “specifically on this campus,” The CORE.  During this meeting, District President Engelbrecht summarized Skorzewski’s behavior and the Donnan’s reaction and the steps the District took to rehabilitate Skorzewski, he solicited questions, and then he gave the members of St. Peter & The CORE thirty days to submit comments to the district leadership regarding Skorzewski’s proposed CRM status.  During this meeting, District President Engelbrecht also said that he was an ardent supporter of Skorzewski and his ministry.
Jonathan Donnan showed up at this meeting because he wanted to protect his wife’s reputation and honor.  After DP Engelbrecht’s summary, Jonathan believed that DP Engelbrecht had portrayed Pastor Skorzewski’s behavior in the best possible light, while portraying his wife’s reaction in the worst possible light.  Therefore, Jonathan sat through much of the Q&A section with his hand raised waiting to be called upon.  Finally, Pastor Glende said that he would allow Jonathan to speak; however, he first informed the congregation that Jonathan was not invited to the meeting, had no legal right to be there, and that if Jonathan started attacking people, then he would be asked to leave.
Jonathan said that was a rude way to call upon him.  The entire exchange then quickly devolved into whether Jonathan had a right to be there because he was not a member of St. Peter & The CORE.  Jonathan believed that as a Christian husband he had a duty to try to defend his wife, and that St. Peter & The CORE’s constitution and bylaws could not overrule his moral obligations.  After a short period of time, Jonathan left the meeting, but announced that he was there to defend his wife, and would be outside to speak with anyone who wanted to hear the whole truth.
While Jonathan was outside, he could hear laughter and applause inside as the meeting continued without him.  While Jonathan was outside, he also received a lecture about forgiveness and about how he did not understand forgiveness.
A few days later, Pastors Glende and Skorzewski and two church staff members filed four almost identical lawsuits against Jonathan Donnan.  They asked the Outagamie County Family Court to issue four restraining orders telling Jonathan to not write any more letters to WELS pastors about Glende or Skorzewski, to not show up at any future meetings at St. Peter & The CORE where they would be discussing personnel issues, and to have no further contact with St. Peter & The CORE or its staff.
Pastor Glende’s case was heard first.  Pastor Glende spent about two hours presenting his case.  He himself testified extensively along with two laymen from his church.
Legal Issues
In order for a behavior to be harassment, it has to serve no legitimate purpose.  Does writing a letter to the men (WELS pastors) who would help decide Skorzewski’s CRM status serve no legitimate purpose?  And does showing up at a congregational meeting where they are discussing how your wife was treated, and where the District President is seeking comments and advice about whether that pastor should get CRM status, does that serve no legitimate purpose?
Is that inappropriate behavior?  Or could those be the behaviors of a man trying to protect and defend his wife?
The allegations Mara made against Skorzewski were not false.  A false allegation would serve no legitimate purpose, but a truthful allegation does.  If certain WELS pastors and a certain WELS congregation are going to be specifically asked to provide comments about whether Skorzewski should serve as a pastor again, is it legitimate that they should also hear from the victim or her representative?
The August 30 Court Hearing
Under oath, Pastor Glende testified that Jonathan’s behavior served no legitimate purpose because it hindered the ministry of St. Peter & The CORE, and it was just an attack.  (Court transcript, page 40).  According to Pastor Glende, Jonathan’s behavior served no legitimate purpose because the decision about whether Skorzewski would serve as a pastor was made back in January and April.  Pastor Glende stated this numerous times throughout his testimony.  Below is just one example.
Under oath, Pastor Glende said that Jonathan’s “behavior was disruptive in our congregation in a meeting.  It is — it attacks me personally.”  Attorney Maurer then asked Glende: “What’s wrong with that, pastor?  What’s wrong with a person attacking on how you handled the situation of allegations of sexual harassment by one of your pastors?  What’s wrong with that?”  To which Pastor Glende responded: “A group of my peers have said it’s been dealt with, addressed, move on.”  (Court transcript, page 39).
In summarizing all of the evidence presented by Pastor Glende, Pastor Glende’s attorney said:
There are statements that have been provided as evidence that … show that Mr. Donnan is not going to let this issue die.  He believes his purpose is to see this through.  The issue has absolutely been resolved, and for some reason Mr. Donnan refuses to come to grips with that.  So his conduct in sending the letters, continuing to contact people, showing up at the church and refusing to leave, clearly, in my opinion, falls within, engages in a course of conduct that has no legitimate purpose …
— Court Transcript, page 75.
Was the issue of Skorzewski’s CRM status absolutely resolved?  No.  This court hearing took place during the 30 day comment period in which members of St. Peter & The CORE were being asked to advise the District about Skorzewski’s CRM status.  And only a few months later, the District granted Skorzewski CRM status, he immediately received a call, and has already been installed as a WELS pastor in Texas.
Attorney Maurer tried to get Pastor Glende to admit that the August 13 meeting was about potentially reinstating Skorzewski to the pastoral office.  Attorney Maurer questioning Pastor Glende:
Q:   Okay, you testified earlier that the issue in the past had been resolved back in January, correct?
A:   There was an initial decision reached on it in January.
Q:   He resigned in April?
A:   Correct.
Q:   And you’re stating that the August 13, 2013 meeting had nothing to do with that whatsoever, with his disposition going forward with the church, correct?
A:   Pastor Ski resigned and is not currently a pastor.  He doesn’t have status to be a pastor.  The church has nothing to do with him going forward as a pastor.
Q:   That’s not entirely true, is it?  Isn’t it a fact that part of the purpose of this meeting was some specific members of the congregation wanted to reinstate the pastor to his previous position, correct?
A:   That’s not true.
Q:   If I have people come in and testify that there were people at that meeting that were petitioning the church to reinstate the pastor, that’s not the truth, they’re lying?
A:   Were there people there that their opinion was that the pastor should be reinstated?  Yes.
Q:   Were there people at the meeting that said that?
A:   There could have been people in the meeting that said that.  The purpose of the meeting; however, was not to reinstate him.
Q:   The purpose of the meeting was as it related to Jonathan’s wife, correct?
A:   To share information regarding the case.
Q:   So why would you think it’s inappropriate for the husband of the alleged victim to be present at the meeting to hear this?
A:   Mr. Donnan has heard all that information before, and from my knowledge, it was a meeting for the members of our congregation, which he is not one of.
Q:   Why didn’t you simply tell him to leave in the beginning?  Instead you gave him the opportunity to speak.
A:   I didn’t see him there at the beginning, I was up in the front.  I had not had a chance to do anything about it and I didn’t want to cause a scene to ask him to leave.  For two hours of the meeting Jonathan sat there.  From my position he looked agitated and upset when different things were said, which, as I have always said, Jonathan is entitled to his opinion in regards to this case.
Q:   Wouldn’t you be upset if you believed your wife was the victim of sexual harassment by a pastor and they were discussing that at a meeting?  Do you think that’s unreasonable?
A:   I guess I don’t know how to answer that question.
— Court Transcript, pages 35-37.
Attorney Maurer further questioning Pastor Glende:
Q:   Do you believe there was any merit to the allegations against the pastor?
A:   Do I believe it was sexual harassment?
Q:   Do you believe there was any merit to any of the allegations, factual allegations, alleged against the pastor?
A:   The pastor resigned.
Q:   That’s not an answer to my question.  Do you believe there was any factual basis for the allegations of harassment made by Jonathan’s wife towards the pastor?
A:   We have said, declared publicly, that lapses in judgment happened.
Q:   I’m just — yes or no, you personally?
ATTORNEY GILL:  Objection to the relevance, your Honor.
ATTORNEY MAURER:  It’s part of a harassment injunction, conduct that does not serve a legitimate purpose.  Making up allegations of harassment just to attack these people, then that doesn’t serve a legitimate purpose.
ATTORNEY GILL:  Your Honor, the continued behavior has no legitimate purpose.
THE COURT:  The objection is overruled, he can answer.
WITNESS [Pastor Glende]:  Can you repeat the question?
Q:   I’m asking you if you personally believe there was any merit to the factual allegations of harassment raised by Jonathan’s wife against the pastor?
A:   Are you asking me if there were —
Q:   Just yes or no.
A:   You’re asking me a yes or no to — I can’t agree with --
Q:   So you don’t believe there was any merit to the factual allegations of harassment?
ATTORNEY GILL:  I’m going to object.  There were eight or nine allegations, your Honor.
ATTORNEY MAURER:  I’m asking about any of them.
ATTORNEY GILL:  What specific allegations are we talking about, your Honor?
THE COURT:  Overruled, he can answer.
[Attorney Maurer questioning Pastor Glende]:
Q:   To any of them in general.  Yes?
A:   Sure, yes.
Q:   Okay, so would you personally condone that type of conduct by one of your pastors?
A:   No.
Q:   Okay, so you believe that there were indiscretions by the pastor directly towards Jonathan’s wife that occurred by the pastor, correct?
A:   Yes, which were addressed.  And then once he resigned, it was over because he is no longer a pastor.  That happened in the middle of April.
Q:   Okay, but again, the August 13 meeting was to address possibly the allegations that had happened in the past?
A:   It was to share the summary of everything that had gone on from the end of October, November to that point.
Q:   What precipitated that meeting?
A:   Because of the letter that Jonathan and Mara sent out.  Our district president said it was appropriate, at this time, to set it out.  Until that point, we had not shared publicly with anyone in our congregation that this involved Jonathan or Mara.
Q:   Your superiors told you, let’s have a meeting with the congregation on this to let everyone know what happened, and it’s your position you didn’t want him and his wife to be there?
A:   He wasn’t a member, he was an uninvited guest.
Q:   Okay.
A:   Wanted or not wanted, I wouldn’t have thought of inviting him, he wasn’t a member.
— Court Transcript, pages 40-43.
Also at issue during the hearing was whether the August 13 meeting at The CORE was about how Pastor Skorzewski treated Jonathan’s wife, and Pastor Glende admitted that was true.
After Pastor Glende finished presenting all his evidence, and before the defense called a single witness, the court ruled on the case.  The standard the court used was this:  It put the best construction on everything Pastor Glende and his witnesses said, it considered Pastor Glende’s case in the kindest possible light, and gave Pastor Glende the benefit of the doubt on everything.  Nonetheless, the court ruled that Pastor Glende’s case had no merit, and dismissed his case.
Pastor Glende’s case was dismissed even before the defense called a single witness or presented any evidence.  Glende had nothing.
Aftermath
Immediately after the court dismissed Pastor Glende’s case, Attorney Maurer suggested that Skorzewski and the two church staffers should voluntarily dismiss their own virtually identical cases.  (Because Pastor Glende’s case took so long, the other three cases were rescheduled to a later date).  However, Skorzewski and the two church staffers refused to dismiss their cases, and instead attempted to negotiate a settlement out of court.
However, Jonathan refused to give up any of his legal rights in return for them agreeing to dismiss their cases.  In response, Skorzewski and the two staffers waited until the very last hour to dismiss their cases, thereby forcing the Donnans to endure the maximum amount of stress, and to pay the maximum amount in legal (attorney) fees.
Soon after, the Northern Wisconsin District denied Skorzewski CRM status, but made no announcement.  In congregational meetings at both St. Peter & The CORE, Skorzewski then advised the congregation that they should move on without him.  (“Around the Council Table,” November 2013 church newsletter).  The November 2013 church newsletter also had a special section entitled: “MOVING FORWARD AT THE CORE” which stated:
The announcement has been made that Ski will not be returning to that position [pastor at The CORE].  Although he applied for it, his reinstatement to the pastoral office was not granted at this point.  In a special meeting at The CORE, Ski expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve in our midst, but encouraged all in attendance to move forward.  That is the intent of our leadership on both campuses.  We will continue to pray for Ski, his family, and his reinstatement.
Shortly after that, Skorzewski applied for CRM status a second time.  This time, the Northern Wisconsin District granted Skorzewski CRM status (under the condition that he not be a pastor in the Northern Wisconsin District), and almost immediately Skorzewski received a call to serve as a WELS pastor in Texas.  St. Peter & The CORE then announced in their church newsletter that they were holding a farewell party for Pastor Skorzewski to wish him God’s blessings as he prepared to leave for his new call.
So a WELS pastor resigned, for cause, because of sin, but before he left for his new call at another congregation, his former congregation threw him a farewell party.
On Sunday, April 27, 2014, Skorzewski was installed as pastor at Christ the Rock (a WELS) church in Texas, and Pastor Glende preached at Skorzewski’s installation service.  (Vimeo 93511608).  At 28:20 in the sermon, Pastor Glende said that Skorzewski was his best friend, and that he wished he could work with Skorzewski forever, but God had a different plan: to bring him to Texas.  At about 28 minutes into the sermon, Pastor Glende said, “I’m sure down the road or in the course of time, you’ll hear a great deal about what it is that God used to bring him here.  It’s an amazing story.”
Zank was the VP who approved Ski's CRM status,
allowing Ski to get a call before anyone knew about it.
Therefore, the district voted to elect Zank as the new District President.

Jane's Story: WELS Sexual Harassment

Written by "Jane"

When I accepted the Executive Assistant position at a contemporary WELS church, there were many things I expected, but sexual harassment was not one of them. In addition to the harassment, I witnessed my supervisor and "spiritual leader" demean other women (including members of the church), drink on the job, plagiarize sermons and act in the very manner you would not expect from a "called servant of The Lord".

I almost immediately observed the pastor's casualness, lack of boundaries, and what I perceived as downright laziness at times. His standards and expectations for my position as the assistant seemed to exceed his own standards as the pastor.

Shortly after starting my position, I received a text message sometime after midnight from my supervisor telling me I should have sex with my husband. We never requested counseling or advice in this realm so his inappropriateness was rather strange at best to us. We strived to take words and actions in the best possible way. I was subjected to many routine "lapses in judgement" by my spiritual leader. Including an incident of him showing me a video that depicted nude male genitals while alone in his office. Is there ever a correct context for a supervisor to show anything like this to his married employee? (I will discuss this more at another time).

As he pushed the boundaries and inappropriateness, my conscience began to nag at me. Through even the darkest days, I allowed myself to believe that these behaviors were normal. Yet I began to feel torn between my loyalty to the church and the moral issues at hand.

I spent many nights awake and hovered over my bible in tears. There was something very wrong about what was going on at that church. I've seen it all first hand and, yet, felt obligated to keep it all a secret. It was the kind of secret that absolutely tormented me, but I thought I was doing the right thing at the time (just another lie we are led to believe as victims).

After months of utter frustration the hostile work environment began to take a toll on me and my husband. I prayerfully considered if perhaps this was an unhealthy situation for me to be in. So I gave my notice and was told to tell members of the congregation that I "wasn't a good fit" when I left my position. It was unbearable to work with a man that continued to ignore, scream, belittle, degrade and humiliate me. I left this job feeling worthless and far less confident than when I started (which was previously at a Fortune 100 company).

I suffered in silence while working at that church. I fell into a deep darkness from all that I experienced and witnessed there and its leadership. Shortly after I left the position my depression began to spiral. We maintained membership at this "relevant" church because of the relationships that we had formed with other Christians and did not want to neglect our spiritual life. The final straw was when an assault rifle was used as a sermon prop.

We decided it was best to seek the counsel of a trusted pastor since the leadership at this church either outright condoned or failed to supervise its employees and their behavior. We were convicted to resolve all this in a Christ centered way. Our hope was to see positive changes and healing for all.

How many times does a synod president attend a
congregational meeting to cut a deal with the district president?
Mark Schroeder did, and Ski got another call.

My husband and I have continued to fight an endless battle for justice in the synod and to see that this doesn't happen to someone else. We've patiently been in contact with top synod leaders. We've encountered roadblocks, never ending circles and have witnessed inconsistencies throughout the disciplinary processes within the synod. By the Grace of God, we've encountered wonderful brothers and sisters in Christ to share in our burden. Unfortunately, we've also encountered timid leaders and those hesitant to publicly speak for the truth. People seem to selectively choose which commandments and passages to throw at you while ignoring others.

The journey has been incredibly lonely and frustrating since we were asked to remain silent and be patient. We are exhausted and completely astonished that after everything was brought into the light this man continues to be a pastor and counsel members. We will continue to persevere with others until positive changes are made in this synod so that all victims of abuse are protected rather than the perpetrators.

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, (‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬ ESV)

The abusive pastor protected at all cost by WELS
and supported by the clergy?
I have seen it before.

Creation Gardening - What Would Maynard Do?

Looking at a year in gardening, the best question to ask is, "What would Maynard G. Krebs do?"

That means looking at the easiest path, the least costly in money, time, and energy. My friends keep writing on Facebook about their knee problems, so it is better to avoid unnecessary strain.

1. Let God do most of the work, through His creatures. The birds, insects, and soil creatures will fulfill their responsibilities by:

  • renewing the soil,
  • conserving water,
  • eliminating pests,
  • controlling weeds.

2. Compost on the spot with Jackson Mulch - newspapers covered by wood mulch, grass, or leaves. That is all the compost really needed, but it is fun to have it banked in the back, for extra when needed.

3. Save money by ordering in bulk early, which motivates companies on the Net to offer such discounts as free shipping, credits on the purchase ($50 off for $100 spent), and free supplies.

4. Hire a helper for some of the work. We have a lot of fun, laughing about how things are going, or about something going wrong. A lot more gets done because simply looking at some jobs is enough to put it off forever. When two work on it, the job is easy.

5. Water with soaker hoses instead of spraying. A soaker hose will water near the roots, use less water, and create water opportunities for the birds. I place plastic pans under mine to create little bird baths that clean themselves.

6. Feed, shelter, and water the birds. They need all three and will look for what is not provided in the yard. Water is the first priority, because they must drink, bathe, and preen. Shelter is created with a variety of plants and such details as brush piles, or sticks, or bushes, or tall grass and weeds. Food means the enjoyment of watching them eat and chatter about the food supply, which attracts even more birds.

Gardening Tips You Will Not Read on Facebook

Facebook has a lot of features designed to lead people into advertisements. "You will not believe what this person just did!" Or - "Ten movies that bombed at the box office with superstars in the cast! You will not believe #5."

I am not selling any garden products so these tips are a little more credible.

1. Buy bags of wood mulch, on sale, if possible. Wood is a great addition to soil. Wood mulch is also a very good way to hold in moisture and suppress weeds, when combined with another wood product, newspapers.

2. Buy bags of mushroom compost, which also go on sale at times. There two ways to move soil. One is to dig it up and wheelbarrow it to another location. The other is to haul a bag of mushroom compost in a wheelbarrow and use it where needed, without digging a hole somewhere else. I use these bags for filling in holes, for enhancing a planting (new bushes), and for wide row planting. When our helper opened up a long, narrow trench for peas, we filled it in partially with mushroom compost. The material is even in texture, unlike freshly dug soil, and easy to apply from the plastic bags.

3. Buy twine. You will always need twine, sooner or later. I ordered more twine and found my supply five minutes later. No problem. I always need it - to hold some bamboo fencing up, to secure the aerial aqueduct, to hang some suet.

4. Buy suet. The low-cost, high value bird food is hard to find, except in overpriced little square packages or in $20 allotments from a bird food supply company. Grocery store meat employees looked at me like I was asking for live roaches. What? Suet? They used to package and sell it cheap. I asked timidly at a meat market, and they had some. I bought it for 60 cents a pound at the meat market, and it lasted all winter. The starlings are feasting on it each day. Woodpeckers also love it. The birds that eat the most insects like suet best of all.

5. Buy large amounts of seed. I hate those tiny packets with 10-20 seeds inside. Am I gardening for ants? It is soul-crushing to have a long row ready to plant and not enough seed. I look at places ready to plant soon and estimate the seed needed. It is good to have extra to use in another place, to swap with someone, to give away for a new children's garden.

6. Buy soaker hose, 75 foot lengths. Why move sprinklers around all day? Soaker hoses will use water more frugally. Birds like the gentle sprinkles of water issuing from them.

Clearwater County pastor charged with sex crimes

BAGLEY -- A Clearwater County pastor is charged with 16 counts of felony criminal sexual conduct for acts that allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2014.
Scott Morey, 42, of Shevlin appeared in Clearwater County Court in Bagley on Friday facing eight first-degree, three second-degree, two third-degree and three fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges.
Morey was a pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church in Winger, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bejou and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh. The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Wohlrabe, bishop with Northwestern Minnesota Synod ELCA in Moorhead, said Morey resigned as pastor at the churches Dec. 12. Morey remains on the ELCA clergy roster, but has been asked to cease functioning as a pastor pending the outcome of the court proceedings in Clearwater County.
"I intend to wait for the court process to run its course before we consider how to carry out the ELCA's discipline process in Pastor Morey's situation," Wohlrabe said.
Morey is accused of engaging in sexual contact with three juvenile males. Morey was known to and in a position of authority over his victims, according to charge descriptions in a criminal complaint. The abuse occurred at a Clearwater County residence, according to court documents.
On Oct. 30, one of Morey's alleged victims told a Clearwater County Sheriff's Office deputy that Morey had been sexually abusing him for approximately seven years, according to court documents. The boy would have been about 9 years old when the abuse began.
Law enforcement interviewed two other juvenile males who said they had been sexually abused by Morey between 2009 and 2014. According to court documents, Morey offered his victims money, an iPod and a phone if they engaged in sexual acts with him.
Morey was taken into custody Friday and is being held in the Clearwater County Jail on $800,000 bail. A future court date had not yet been set as of Tuesday afternoon.
First-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine. The maximum penalty for second-degree criminal sexual conduct is 25 years in prison and a $35,000 fine. Third-degree criminal sexual conduct carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine. The maximum penalty for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct is 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Rain Is Falling - Bacterial Growing

$

Charts cannot do justice to the complexity of
life in soil, but this is a start
Many people think of rain watering the plants and adding nitrogen to the soil. I think of rain as feeding the soil creatures that mediate life for everything in and above the soil. Bacteria need water to reproduce and help them do their work in decomposition.

Bacteria are everywhere. Few gardeners appreciate that they are crucial to the lives of plants, and fewer still have ever taken them into consideration . Yet no other organism has more members in the soil, not even close. In part, this is because these single-celled organisms are so minuscule that anywhere from 250,000 to 500,000 of them can fit inside the period at the end of this sentence.

Lewis, Wayne;   Lowenfels, Jeff;  (2010-09-10). Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition (Kindle Locations 546-549). Timber Press. Kindle Edition.

When I tossed banana peels and coffee grounds on the vegetable garden mulch this morning, I noticed the rain falling, a welcome surprise. I was going to soak all the new seed already planted (peas and sunflowers) later today. That job is done already.

The peas are not a gamble. Looking ahead, the weather will be perfect for an early crop. I ordered 900 more seeds to extend the row to over 75 feet. Since the fence garden on Mrs. Wright's side will be watered by soaker hose, growth is inevitable, not matter what is planted there.

The sunflowers are a minor gamble. Some, perhaps many will perish on cold nights in February, but their row will be supplemented by the giant ones (15 feet tall) to be planted in March. Rotting plants and roots add to the bacterial in the soil.

Bacteria reproduce, for the most part, by single cell division; that is, one cell divides and makes two cells, they each divide again, and so forth. Amazingly, under laboratory conditions, one solitary bacterium can produce in the vicinity of 5 billion offspring in a mere 12 hours if they have enough food. If all bacteria reproduced at this rate all the time, it would take only a month or so to double the mass of our planet. Fortunately, soil bacteria are limited by natural conditions, predators (protozoa chief among them), and a slower reproductive rate than their laboratory cousins; for example, bacteria must have some form of moisture for the uptake of nutrients and the release of waste.

Lewis, Wayne; Lowenfels, Jeff;  (2010-09-10). Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition (Kindle Locations 554-559). Timber Press. Kindle Edition.

We began decomposing nutrition in the soil last fall, when we covered the new gardening areas with Jackson Mulch and raked leaves over the back garden area, where plants for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies would dominate.

The warm non-winter means many leaves are still on trees. Some neighbors are just gathering their leaves and mowing or hauling them off. I counted 15 bags of them on the curb at one neighbor's home(!?). You will notice almost no leaves in mid-spring, because the eruption of soil life in spring will devour the leaves remaining.

Primary decomposers
Despite their tiny size, bacteria are among the earth’s primary decomposers of organic matter, second only to fungi. Without them, we would be smothered in our own wastes in a matter of months. Bacteria decompose plant and animal material in order to ingest nitrogen, carbon compounds, and other nutrients. These nutrients are then held immobilized inside the bacteria; they are released (mineralized ) only when the bacteria are consumed or otherwise die and are themselves decayed.

Lewis, Wayne;  Lowenfels, Jeff; (2010-09-10). Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition (Kindle Locations 564-567). Timber Press. Kindle Edition.

Creation gardening begins with increasing the bacterial and fungi in the soil. They are the primary decomposers and should be honored, praised, fed, and nurtured in every possible way. I walked by the inorganic fertilizer at Walmart yesterday. What a stink! In contrast, natural amendments have an earthy, pleasant smell, because one of those microbes contributes that fragrance. The actinomycetes is the good guy.

A pleasant smell after the first shower is because of a group of filamentous bacteria Actinomycetes found in the soil. They grow well in soil when the conditions are damp and warm.
Someone wrote last night about the cause of good works. Roman Catholics mandate them, including them as one cause of justification (faith plus works). Calvinists write about obligation too - Barth - the gift is a demand. Luther saw the proper relationship as the good tree (justification by faith) necessarily bearing fruit.

The cause of clergy and laity being abused in the Synodical Conference is unbelief. Only apostates could be so evil while parading their glittering vices that they call sanctification.

Back to the garden. I would require gardening each year of seminary. "Here are $50 in seed, paid for by your tuition, and a few tools. Raise a productive garden and include that in all your sermons and essays. First prize is a call. Second prize is a manure fork. Third prize - a Thrivent job." (Apologies to the movie Glengarry Glen Ross)

Gardeners want a lively crop of earthworms to work for them, a worthy goal. To do that, they need to nurture their soil bacterial with mulch and compost.

Earthworms eat? Bacteria
What does a worm eat? Bacteria, primarily, which is why it should come as no surprise that soils with large populations of worms are usually bacterially dominated. Other foods are fungi, nematodes, and protozoa, as well as the organic matter on or in which these microorganisms live.

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY.

A part of this sermon, §§ 19-46, Andreas Osiander had printed in 1529 in separate pamphlet form against the Anabaptists, “because it was not possible for every person to purchase the complete Postil.” Its title was: “The Baptism of Infants and Alien Faith.

1529. Printed by George Wachter. With a Short Introduction by Osiander.”

German text: Erlangen edition II, 52; Walch II, 654; St. Louis II, 478.

TEXT:

Matthew 8:1-13. And when he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And behold, there came to him a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou made clean. And straightway his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go, show thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

And when he was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying, Lord, my servant lieth in the house sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And he saith unto him, I will come and heal him. And the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.

For I also am a man under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

And when Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven: but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And the servant was healed in that hour.

I. TWO EXAMPLES OF FAITH AND LOVE.

1. Two examples of faith and love are taught in this Gospel: one by the leper, the other by the centurion. Let us first consider the leper. This leper would not have been so bold as to go to the Lord and ask to be cleansed, if he had not trusted and expected with his whole heart, that Christ would be kind and gracious and would cleanse him. For because he was a leper, he had reason to be timid. Moreover the law forbids lepers to mingle with the people. Nevertheless he approaches, regardless of law and people, and of how pure and holy Christ is.

2. Here behold the attitude of faith toward Christ: it sets before itself absolutely nothing but the pure goodness and free grace of Christ, without seeking and bringing any merit. For here it certainly cannot be said, that the leper merited by his purity to approach Christ, to speak to him and to invoke his help. Nay, just because he feels his impurity and unworthiness, he approaches all the more and looks only upon the goodness of Christ.

This is true faith, a living confidence in the goodness of God. The heart that does this, has true faith; the heart that does it not, has not true faith; as they do who keep not the goodness of God and that alone in sight, but first look around for their own good works, in order to be worthy of God’s grace and to merit it. These never become bold to call upon God earnestly or to draw near to him.

3. Now this confidence of faith or knowledge of the goodness of Christ would never have originated in this leper by virtue of his own reason, if he had not first heard a good report about Christ, namely, how kind, gracious and merciful he is, ready to help and befriend, comfort and counsel every one that comes, to him. Such a report must undoubtedly have come to his ears, and from this fame he derived courage, and turned and interpreted the report to his own advantage. He applied this goodness to his own need and concluded with all confidence: To me also he will be as kind as his fame and good report declare. His faith therefore did not grow out of his reason, but out of the report he heard of Christ, as St. Paul says: “Belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the Word (or report) of Christ.” Romans 10:17.

4. This is the Gospel that is the beginning, middle and end of everything good and of all salvation. For we have often heard that we must first hear the Gospel, and after that believe and love and do good works; not first do good works and so reverse the order, as the teachers of works do. But the Gospel is a good report, saying or fame of Christ, how he is all goodness, love and grace, as can be said of no other man or saint. For even if other saints have a good report and reputation, it is nevertheless not the Gospel, unless it tells alone of the goodness and grace of Christ; and if it should include other saints also, it is no longer the Gospel. For the Gospel builds faith and confidence alone upon the rock, Jesus Christ.

5. You see therefore that this example of the leper fights for faith and against works. For as Christ helps him out of pure grace through faith without any works or merits of his own, so he does for every man, and would have all to think thus of him and expect from him like aid. And if this leper had said: “Behold, Lord, I have prayed and fasted so much; I beg you to look upon this and on account of it make me clean” – if he had come in this manner, Christ would never have cleansed him. For such a person does not rest upon God’s grace, but upon his own merit. In this way God’s grace is not praised, loved, magnified nor desired; but one’s own works deprive God of his honor and rob him of that which is his. This is to kiss the hand and to deny God, as Job 31:27-28 says: “If my mouth hath kissed my hand; this also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges; for I should have denied God that is above;” and Isaiah 2:8: “They worship the work of their own hands,” that is, the honor and confidence they ought to give to God, they attribute to their own work.

6. Furthermore the example of love is presented here in the love of Christ to the leper. For you see here, how love makes a servant of Christ, so that he helps the poor man freely without any reward, and seeks neither advantage, favor nor honor thereby, but only the good of the poor man and the honor of God the Father. For this reason he also forbids him to tell anyone, in order that it may be a pure, sincere work of free and gracious love.

7. This is what I have often said, that faith makes of us lords, and love makes of us servants,. Indeed, by faith we become gods and partakers of the divine nature and name, as is said in Psalm 82:6: “I said, Ye are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High.” But through love we become equal to the poorest. According to faith we are in need of nothing, and have an abundance; according to love we are servants of all. By faith we receive blessings from above, from God; through love we give them out below, to our neighbor. Even as Christ in his divinity stood in need of nothing, but in his humanity served everybody who had need of him. Of this we have spoken often enough, namely, that we also must by faith be born God’s sons and gods, lords and kings, even as Christ is born true God of the Father in eternity; and again, come out of ourselves by love and help our neighbors with kind deeds, even as Christ became man to help us all.

And as Christ is not God, because he first merited divinity by his works or attained to it through his incarnation, but has it by birth, without any works, even before he became man; so we also have not merited by works or love sonship with God, so that our sins are forgiven, and death and hell cannot injure us; but without works and before our love, we have received it in the Gospel by grace through faith. And as Christ first became man to serve us after being God from eternity; so we also do good and exercise love to our neighbor, after we have become pious, free from sin, alive, saved, and sons of God by faith. Let this suffice concerning the first example, the leper.

8. The other example is like it in respect to faith and love. For this centurion also has a heartfelt confidence in Christ, and sets before his eyes nothing but the goodness and grace of Christ; otherwise he would not have come to him, or he would not have sent to him, as Luke 7:3 says.

Likewise he would not have had this bold confidence, if he had not first heard of the goodness and grace of Christ. In this instance also the Gospel is the beginning and incentive of his confidence and faith.

9. Here we learn again, that we must begin with the Gospel and believe it and not look upon any merit or work of our own as this centurion also advanced no merit or work, but only his confidence in the goodness of Christ. So we see that all the works of Christ exhibit examples of the Gospel, of faith and of love.

10. We also observe the example of love, how Christ freely shows him kindness, without any request or reward, as was said above. Moreover, the centurion also shows an example of love, in that he took pity upon his servant as upon himself, even as Christ also has had compassion upon us, and did the good deed freely, solely for the benefit of the servant, as Luke 7:2 says, he did it because the servant was dear to him; just as if he said: The love and affection, which he bore to him, impelled him to consider his need and to do this. Let us also do likewise, and see to it that we do not deceive ourselves and rest satisfied in that we now have the Gospel, and yet have no regard for our neighbor in his need. This having been said of these two examples, we will now also examine some details of the text.

II. THE EXPLANATION OF TWO THOUGHTS IN THIS GOSPEL.

11. When the leper here limits his prayer and says: “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.” it is not to be understood as if he doubted the goodness and grace of Christ. For such a faith would be of no value, even if he believed that Christ was almighty, and was able to do and know all things. For that is living faith, which does not doubt that God is also good to us and is graciously willing to do what we ask. But it is to be understood in this way: faith does not doubt the good will God has toward a person, by which he wishes him every good; but it is not known to us, whether what faith asks and presents, is good and useful for us; God alone knows this,. Therefore faith prays in a way that it submits all to the gracious will of God, whether it is for his honor and our good, and yet it does not doubt that God will grant it, or, if it cannot be granted, that his divine will withholds it in great grace, because he sees it is better not to bestow it. But in all this faith nevertheless remains certain and sure of God’s gracious, will, whether he gives or withholds, as St. Paul also says in Romans 8:26, we know not how to pray as we ought, and as the Lord’s Prayer bids us to prefer his will and to pray for it.

12. This is what we have often said: we ought to believe without doubting and without limiting the divine goodness; but we ought to pray with the limitation, that it may be his honor, his kingdom and will, in order that we may not limit his will to time, place, measure or name, but leave all that freely to him. For this reason the prayer of the leper pleased the Lord so well and was soon heard. For where we submit to his will, and seek what is acceptable to him, he cannot refrain from doing in return what is acceptable to us. Faith inclines his favor to us, and submissive prayer inclines him to grant us what we pray for. As to the sending of the leper to the priests, why it was done and what it signified, enough has been said in the Postil of the ten lepers.

13. However, the saying of Christ: “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel,” has been discussed with solicitude, lest it should imply that Christ did not speak truly or that the Mother of God and the apostles were inferior to this centurion. Although I might say here that Christ is speaking of the people of Israel, among whom he had preached and to whom he had come, and that therefore his mother and disciples were excluded, because they traveled with him and came with him to the people of Israel in his preaching, nevertheless I will abide by the words of the Lord and take them as they stand; and for the following reasons. First, it is contrary to no article of belief that this faith of the centurion was without a parallel among the apostles or in the Mother of God. But whenever no article of faith openly contradicts the words of Christ, they are to be taken literally, and are not to be adapted and bent by our interpretation, neither for the sake of any saint, or angel, nor of God himself. For his Word is the truth itself above all saints and angels.

14. Secondly, such interpretation and adaptation spring from a carnal mind and intention, namely to estimate the saints of God not according to God’s grace, but according to their person, worth and greatness; which is contrary to God, who estimates quite differently, according to his gifts alone. For he never granted to John the Baptist to perform miracles, John 10:41, as many inferior saints did. In short, he frequently does through inferior saints what he does not do through great saints. He concealed himself from his mother, when he was twelve years old, and suffered her to be in ignorance and error, Luke 2:43. On Easter Sunday he showed himself to Mary Magdalene, before he showed himself to his mother and the apostles, John 20:14. He spoke to the Samaritan woman, John 4:7, and to the woman taken in adultery, more kindly than he ever spoke to his own mother. John 8:10. And when Peter fell and denied him, the murderer on the cross stood firm in his faith.

15. By these and similar wonders he shows that he will not have his Spirit in his saints limited by us, and that we are not to judge according to the person. He wills to bestow his gifts freely, according to his pleasure and not according to our opinion, as St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:11.

Indeed even of himself he says in John 14:12: “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do.” The purpose of all this is to prevent men from being presumptuous toward others and from elevating one saint above another and creating divisions. All are to be equal in the grace of God, however unequal they are in his gifts. It is his will to do through St. Stephen what he does not do through St. Peter, and through St. Peter what he does not do through his mother; so that it may be he alone who does all in all without distinction of person according to his will.

16. In this sense also is it to be understood that at the time of his preaching he found not such faith either in his mother or in the apostles, whether or not he found then or afterward greater faith in his mother and the apostles, or in many others. For it may easily be possible that at the time of his conception and birth he granted great faith to his mother, and afterwards never or seldom like great faith. At times he may have permitted it to decline, as he did when for three days she had lost him, Luke 2:48. He deals thus with all his saints; and if he did not, the saints would doubtless fall into presumption and make idols of themselves or we would make idols of them, and look more upon their worthiness and persons than upon God’s grace.

17. Now learn from this how foolish and void of understanding we are in regard to God’s works and wonders, when we despise the plain Christian man and think that only the “men with pointed mitres” and the learned know and understand God’s truth; whereas Christ here exalts this heathen with his faith above all his disciples. This is because we hold to persons and dignities, and not to God’s Word and grace. Therefore with persons and dignities we also plunge into every error, and then say, the Christian church and the councils have declared so; they cannot err, because they have the Holy Spirit. Meanwhile Christ is with those despised ones and gives dignitaries and councils over to the devil. Therefore note well, how Christ exalts this heathen. He surpasses Annas, Caiaphas and all the priests, scholars and saints, all of whom ought by right to be the pupils of this heathen, not to say that they ought never to be above him in their opinions and judgments. God sometimes grants to a great saint no faith and to a small saint great faith, in order that one may always esteem another better than himself. Romans 12:10.

III. THE DISCUSSION OF THE DOCTRINE OF PERSONAL FAITH AND THE FAITH OF OTHERS; ALSO, OF FAITH AND THE BAPTISM OF CHILDREN. “Lord, I am not worthy.”

18. Herein is the great faith of this heathen, that he knows salvation does not depend upon the bodily presence of Christ, for this does not avail, but upon the Word and faith. But the apostles did not yet know this, neither perhaps did his mother, but they clung to his bodily presence and were not willing to let it go, John 16:6. They did not cling to his Word alone. But this heathen is so fully satisfied with his Word, that he does not even desire his presence nor does he deem himself worthy of it. Moreover, he proves his strong faith by a comparison and says: I am a man and can do what I wish with mine own by a word; should not you be able to do what you wish by a word, because I am sure, and you also prove, that health and sickness, death and life are subject to you as my servants are to me?

Therefore also his servant was healed in that hour by the power of his faith.

19. Now since the occasion is offered and this Gospel requires it, we must say a little about alien faith and its power. For many are interested in this subject, especially on account of the little children, who are baptized and are saved not by their own, but by the faith of others; just as this servant was healed not by his own faith, but by the faith of his master. We have never yet treated of this matter; therefore we must treat of it now in order to anticipate, as much as in us lies, future danger and error.

20. First we must let the foundation stand firm and sure, that nobody will be saved by the faith or righteousness of another, but only by his own; and on the other hand nobody will be condemned for the unbelief or sins of another, but for his own unbelief; as the Gospel says clearly and distinctly in Mark 16:16: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” And Romans 1:17: “The righteous shall live by faith.” And John 3:16-18: “Whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already.” These are clear, public words, that every one must believe for himself, and nobody can help himself by the faith of others., without his own faith. From these passages we dare not depart and we must not deny them, let them strike where they may, and we ought rather let the world perish than change this divine truth. And if any plausible argument is made against it, that you are not able to refute, you must confess that you do not understand the matter and commit it to God, rather than admit anything contrary to these clear statements. Whatever may become of the heathen, Jews, Turks, little children and everything that exists, these words must be right and true.

21. Now the question is, what becomes of the young children, seeing that they have not yet reason and are not able to believe for themselves, because it is written in Romans 10:17: “Belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” Little children neither hear nor understand the Word of God, and therefore they can have no faith of their own.

22. The sophists in the universities and the sects of the pope have invented the following answer to the question: Little children are baptized without their own faith, and on the faith of the Church, which the sponsors confess at the baptism; thereupon the infant receives in baptism the forgiveness of sins by the power and virtue of the baptism, and faith of its own is infused with grace, so that it becomes a new born child through the water and the Holy Spirit.

23. But if you ask them for the proof of this answer and where this is found in the Scriptures, it is found up the dark chimney, or they will point to their doctor’s hat and say: We are the highly learned doctors and we say so; therefore it is true, and you must not inquire any farther. For almost all their doctrine has no other foundation than their own dreams and imaginations. And when they prepare themselves most carefully, they drag in some quotation from St. Augustine or another holy father. But this is not enough in the things that concern the salvation of souls; for they themselves are, and all the holy fathers were, men. Who will be surety and guarantee that they speak the truth? Who will rely upon it and die by it?

For they say so without Scripture and the Word of God. Saints hither, and saints thither; if my soul is at stake, either to be lost or to be saved eternally, I cannot depend upon all the angels and saints put together, much less upon one or two saints, where they show us no Word of God.

24. From this falsehood they have gone farther and have even come to the point, where they have taught and still teach, that the sacraments have such power, that even if you have no faith and receive the sacrament (provided you have no intention to sin), you shall still receive the grace and the forgiveness of sins without faith. This they have inferred from the former opinion, that little children receive grace in this way without faith, solely by the virtue and power of the sacrament, as they dream. Therefore they also ascribe the same thing to adults and to all men, and utter such things from their own mind, and thereby they have in a masterly way eradicated and made void and unnecessary the Christian faith, and have set up human works alone by virtue of the power of the sacraments. On this subject I have said enough in what I wrote concerning the articles of the bull of Leo.

25. The holy ancient fathers have spoken somewhat better, although not clearly enough. They say nothing about this imaginary power of the sacraments, but they teach that little children are baptized in the faith of the Christian church. But since they do not explain thoroughly, how this Christian faith benefits the children, whether they thereby receive a faith of their own, or are baptized only upon the Christian faith, without faith of their own: the sophists rush in and interpret the language of the holy fathers to the effect, that children are baptized without faith of their own and receive grace solely by reason of the faith of the church. For they are enemies of faith; if only they can exalt works, faith must allow them to do so. They do not think for a moment, whether the holy fathers erred or they themselves understood the fathers aright.

26. Beware of this poison and error, even if it were the expressed opinion of all the fathers and councils; for it will not stand; it has no Scripture for its foundation, but only the imaginations and dreams of men. Moreover it is directly and manifestly opposed to the chief texts already mentioned, where Christ says: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” The conclusion from this is in short, baptism avails for nobody and is to be administered to nobody, unless he believes for himself; and without faith nobody is to be baptized, as St. Augustine himself says: Non sacramentum justficat, sed fides sacramenti (Not the sacrament justifies, but the faith of the sacrament).

27. Besides these there are others, like the brethren called Waldensians.

They teach that every one must believe for himself, and receive baptism or the Lord’s supper with his own faith; otherwise neither baptism nor the Lord’s supper is of any benefit to him. So far they speak and teach correctly. But it is a mockery of holy baptism, when they go on and baptize little children, although they teach that they have no faith of their own.

They thus sin against the second commandment, in that they consciously and deliberately take the name and Word of God in vain. Nor does the excuse help them which they plead, that children are baptized upon their future faith, when they come to the age of reason. For the faith must be present before or at least in the baptism; otherwise the child will not be delivered from the devil and sins.

28. Therefore if their opinion were correct, all that is done with the child in baptism is necessarily falsehood and mockery. For the baptizer asks whether the child believes, and the answer for the child is: Yes. And he asks whether it desires to be baptized, and the answer for the child is again:

Yes, Now nobody is baptized for the child, but it is baptized itself.

Therefore it must also believe itself, or the sponsors must speak a falsehood, when for it they say: I believe. Furthermore, the baptizer declares that it is born anew, has forgiveness of sins, is freed from the devil, and as a sign of this he puts on it a white garment, and deals with it in every way as with a new, holy child of God: all of which would necessarily be untrue, if the child had not its own faith. Indeed, it would be better never to baptize a child, than to trifle and juggle with God’s Word and sacrament, as if he were an idol or a fool.

29. Nor is it of any use that they make a threefold distinction in the kingdom of God: first, it is the Christian church; secondly, eternal life; thirdly, the Gospel; and then say children are baptized for the kingdom of heaven in the third and first sense. That is, they are baptized, not to be saved thereby and to receive forgiveness of sins; but they are received into the church and brought to the Gospel. All this amounts to nothing and is only an invention of their imagination. For it is not entering the kingdom of heaven, if I get among Christians and hear the Gospel. The heathen can also do that without baptism. This is not entering the kingdom of heaven, however, you may talk of the first, second and third sense of the kingdom of heaven. But being in the kingdom of heaven means to be a living member of the church, and not only to hear, but also to believe the Gospel.

Otherwise a man would be in the kingdom of heaven, just as if I threw a stick or stone among Christians, or as the devil is among them. All this is worth nothing.

30. It also follows from this, that the Christian church has two kinds of baptism, and that children have not the same baptism as adults.

Nevertheless St. Paul says there is only “one baptism, one Lord, one faith.” Ephesians 4:5: For if the baptism of children does not effect and bestow, what the baptism of adults effects and bestows, it is not the same baptism: it is indeed no baptism at all, but a sport and mockery of baptism, inasmuch as there is no baptism but that which saves. If one knows or believes that it does not save, he ought not to administer it. But if it is administered, it is not Christian baptism; for one does not believe, that it effects what baptism is to effect. Therefore it is another and foreign baptism. For this reason it were almost necessary, that the Waldensian brethren should have themselves baptized again, as they baptize our people again; because they not only receive baptism without faith, but even contrary to faith, and in mockery and dishonor of God administer another, foreign, unchristian baptism.

31. If now we cannot give a better answer to this question and prove that the little children themselves believe and have their own faith, my sincere counsel and judgment is, that we abstain altogether and the sooner the better, and never baptize a child, so that we may not mock and blaspheme the adorable majesty of God by such trifling and juggling with nothing in it.

Therefore we here conclude and declare that in baptism the children themselves believe and have their own faith, which God effects in them through the sponsors, when in the faith of the Christian church they intercede for them and bring them to baptism. And this is what we call the power of alien faith: not that anybody can be saved by it, but that through it as an intercession and aid he can obtain from God himself his own faith, by which he is saved. It may be compared to my natural life and death. If I am to live, I myself must be born, and nobody can be born for me to enable me to live; but mother and midwife can by their life aid me in birth and enable me to live. In the same way I myself must suffer death, if I am to die; but one can help to bring about my death, if he frightens me, or falls upon me, or chokes, crushes or suffocates me. In like manner, nobody can go to hell for me; but he can seduce me by false doctrine and life, so that I go thither by my own error, into which his error has led me. So nobody can go to heaven for me: but he can assist me, can preach, teach, govern, pray and obtain faith from God, through which I can go to heaven. This centurion was not healed of the palsy of his servant; but yet he brought it about that his servant was restored to health.

32. So here we also say, that children are not baptized in the faith of the sponsors or of the church; but the faith of sponsors and of the church prays and gains faith for them, in which they are baptized and believe for themselves. For this we have strong and firm Scripture proof, Matthew 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-16. When some brought little children to the Lord Jesus that he should touch them, and the disciples forbade them, he rebuked the disciples, and embraced the children, and laid his hands upon them and blessed them, and said: “To such belongeth the kingdom of God” etc. These passages nobody will take from us, nor refute with good proof. For here is written: Christ will permit no one to forbid that little children should be brought to him; nay, he bid them to be brought to him, and blesses them and gives to them the kingdom of heaven. Let us give due heed to this Scripture.

33. This is undoubtedly written of natural children. The interpretation of Christ’s words, as if he had meant only spiritual children, who are small in humility, will not stand. For they were small children as to their bodies, which Luke calls infants. His blessing is placed upon these, and of these he says that the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Will we say they were without faith of their own? Then the passages quoted above are untrue: “He that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” Then Christ also speaks falsely or feigns, when he says the kingdom of heaven is theirs, and is not really speaking of the true kingdom of heaven. Interpret these words of Christ as you please, we have it that children are to be brought to Christ and not to be forbidden to be brought: and when they are brought to Christ, he here compels us to believe that he blesses them and gives to them the kingdom of heaven, as he does with these children. And it is in no way proper for us to act and believe otherwise as long as the words stand: “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not.” Not less is it proper for us to believe that when they are brought to him he embraces them, blesses them, and bestows upon them heaven, as long as the text stands that he blessed the children which were brought to him and gave heaven to them. Who can ignore this text? Who will be so bold as not to suffer little children to come to baptism, or not to believe that Christ blesses them when they come ?

34. He is just as present in baptism now as he was then: this we Christians know for certain. Therefore we dare not forbid baptism to children. Nor dare we doubt that he blesses all who come thither, as he did those children. So then there is nothing left here but the piety and faith of those who brought the little children to him. By bringing them, they effect and aid that the little children are blessed and obtain the kingdom of heaven; which cannot be the case unless they themselves have their own faith, as has been said. So we also say here, that children are brought to baptism by the faith and work of others; but when they get there and the pastor or baptizer deals with them in Christ’s stead, he blesses them and grants to them the faith and the kingdom of heaven: for the word and deed of the pastor are the word and work of Christ himself.

35. With this agrees also what St. John says in his first Epistle,1 John 2:13: “I write unto you, fathers; I write unto you, young men; I have written unto you, little children.” He is not satisfied to write to the young men; he also writes to the children, and writes that they may know the Father. From this it follows that the apostles baptized children also, and held that they believe and know the Father, just as if they had attained to reason and could read. Although somebody might here interpret the word “children” as adults, as Christ designates his disciples sometimes: yet it is certain that here they are meant who are younger than the young men; so that it is evident he is speaking of young people who are under fifteen or eighteen years of age, and excludes nobody down to the first year: for these all are called children.

36. But let us examine their reason why they do not think children believe.

They say, because they have not attained to reason they cannot hear God’s Word; but where God’s Word is not heard there can be no faith. Romans 10:17: “Belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” Tell me is this Christian to judge of God’s works by our thinking, and say, Children have not attained to reason, therefore they cannot believe? How if through this very reason you have already departed from faith, and the children come to faith through their unreason? Dear friend, what good does reason do for faith and the Word of God? Is it not reason which resists in the highest degree faith and the Word of God, so that nobody can come to faith by means of reason? Reason will not endure God’s Word unless it is first blinded and disgraced. Man must first die to reason and become, as it were, a fool, and even as unreasonable and unintelligent as a little child, if he is to become a believer and receive the grace of God; as Christ says in Matthew 18:3: “Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.” How often does Christ hold before us that we must become children and fools, and condemn reason?

37. Tell me also, what kind of reason had the little children whom Christ embraced and blessed, and upon whom he bestowed the kingdom of heaven? Were they not still without reason? Why does he command to bring them to him and then bless them? Where did they get the faith which makes them children of the kingdom of heaven? Nay, just because they are without reason and foolish, they are better prepared to believe than adults and those possessed of reason, because reason is always in the way and with its large head is not willing to push through the narrow door. One must not look upon reason or its works when faith and God’s work are under consideration. Here God alone works and reason is dead, blind and, compared to this work, an unreasonable block, in order that the Scripture may stand, which says: “God is wonderful in his saints;” and: “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways,” Isaiah 55:9.

38. But since they stick so fast in reason, we must assail them with their own wisdom. Tell me, why do you baptize a man when he has come to the age of reason? You answer: He hears God’s Word and believes. I ask:

How do you know that? You answer: He professes it with his mouth.

What shall I say? How, if he lies and deceives? You cannot see his heart.

Very well, then you baptize for no other reason than for what the man shows himself to be externally, and you are uncertain of his faith, and must believe that if he has not more within in his heart than you perceive without, neither his hearing, nor his profession, nor his faith will help him; for it may all be a delusion and no true faith. Who then are you, that you say external hearing and profession are necessary to baptism; where these are wanting one must not baptize? You yourself must confess that such hearing and profession are uncertain, and not enough for one to receive baptism. Now upon what do you baptize? How will you justify your actions when you thus bungle baptism and bring it into doubt? Is it not the fact that you must come and say that it is not becoming for you to know or do more than that he whom you are to baptize be brought to you and ask baptism from you; and you must believe or commit the matter to God, whether he inwardly truly believes or not? In this way you are excused and baptize aright. Why then will you not do the same for the children, whom Christ commands to be brought to him and promises to bless? But you wish first to have the outward hearing and profession, which you yourself acknowledge is uncertain and not sufficient for baptism on the part of the one to be baptized. And you let go the sure word of Christ: in which he bids the little children to be brought unto him, on account of your uncertain external hearing.

39. Moreover tell me, where is the reason of a Christian while he is asleep, since his faith and the grace of God never leave him? If faith can thus continue without the aid of reason, so that the latter is not conscious of it, why should it not also begin in children before reason knows anything about it? In the same way I would like to say of every hour in which a Christian lives and is busy and occupied, that he is not conscious of his faith and reason, and yet his faith does not on that account cease. God’s works are mysterious and wonderful, where and when he wills: and again manifest enough, where and when he wills. Judgment upon them is too high and too deep for us.

40. Since it is commanded here, not to forbid little children to come unto him in order to receive his blessing, and it is not demanded of us to know the exact state of faith within, and the external hearing and profession are not sufficient for the one baptized, we are to be content that it is enough for us, the baptizers, to hear the profession of the one to be baptized, who comes to us of himself. And this for the reason that we may not administer the sacrament against our conscience, as giving it to those in whom no fruit is to be hoped for. But if they assure our conscience of their desire and profession, so that we can administer it as a sacrament that imparts grace, we are excused. If his faith is not true, let that rest with God; we have not given the sacrament as a useless thing, but with the consciousness that it is beneficial.

41. All this I say in order that one may not baptize recklessly, as they do who even administer it with the deliberate knowledge that it will be of no effect or benefit to the person receiving it. For therein the baptizers sin. because they knowingly use God’s sacrament and Word in vain, or at least have the consciousness that it is neither intended nor able to effect anything; which is an altogether unworthy use of the sacrament and a temptation and blasphemy of God. For that is not administering the sacrament, but making a mockery of it. But if the person baptized denies and does not believe, you have done right anyhow, and have administered the true sacrament with the good consciousness that it ought to be beneficial.

42. However, those who do not come of themselves, but are brought, as Christ bids us to bring little children, the faith of these commit to him who bids them to be brought, and baptize them by his command, and say: Lord, thou dost bring them and command to baptize them. Thou wilt answer for them. On this I rely. I dare not drive them away nor forbid them. If they have not heard the Word, by which faith comes, as adults; hear it, they nevertheless hear it like little children. Adults take it up with their ears and reason, often without faith; but they hear it with their ears, without reason and with faith. And faith is nearer in proportion as reason is less, and he is stronger who brings them than the will of adults who come of themselves.

43. These inventive spirits stumble mostly because in adults there is reason, which acts as if it believed the Word it hears. This then they call faith.

Again they see that in children there is as yet no reason; for they act as if they did not believe. But they do not observe that faith in God’s Word is quite a different and deeper thing than what reason does with the Word of God. For it is the work of God alone above all reason, to which the child is just as near as the adult, yes, much nearer, and from which the adult is just as far as the child, yea, much farther.

44. But this that is contrived by reason is a human work. I think, if any baptism is certain, the baptism of children is most certain, because of the Word of Christ, where he commands to bring them, whereas the adults come of themselves. In adults there may be deception because of the reason that is manifest; but in children there can be no deception, because of their hidden reason, in whom Christ works his blessing, even as he has bidden them to be brought to himself. It is a glorious word and not to be treated lightly, that he commands us to bring the children to him, and rebukes those who forbid it.

45. But hereby we do not mean to weaken or destroy the office of preaching. For God indeed does not cause his Word to be preached for the sake of the rational hearing, since no fruit results from that; but for the sake of the spiritual hearing, which, as I have said, children also have as well and even better than adults; for they also hear the Word. For what else is baptism but the Gospel to which they are brought? However, they hear it only once, but they hear it more effectively, because Christ, who has commanded to bring them, receives them. For adults have the advantage that they frequently hear and can think of it again. Yet even in the case of adults it is a fact that the spiritual hearing is not effected by many sermons.

But it may occur once during one sermon, and then he has enough for ever.

What he hears afterwards, he hears either to improve the first hearing or to destroy it again.

46. In short, the baptism and consolation of children lie in the word: “Suffer the little children to come unto me; forbid them not; for to such belongeth the kingdom of God.” He has spoken this and he does not lie.

Therefore it must be right and Christian to bring little children to him. This can only be done in baptism. So also it must be certain that he blesses them, and bestows the kingdom of heaven upon all who come to him, according to the words: “To such belongeth the kingdom of God.” Let this be enough for this time.

47. Finally it would be in order here to treat of the spiritual meaning of leprosy and the palsy. But of leprosy much has been said in the Postil of the ten lepers. Therefore it need not be treated at length here.

KJV Romans 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. 17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. 21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

KJV Matthew 8:1 When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. 2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. 8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Third Sunday After Epiphany
O almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all dangers and necessities stretch forth Thy mighty hand, to defend us against our enemies; through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Jesus Says, I Will. Be Cleansed

As Luther noted, this leper had nothing but faith in Jesus the Savior. He did not arrive at faith on his own, but by hearing the report (Romans 10 quoting Isaiah 53) or sermon.

Faith comes by hearing the report. When multitudes followed Jesus, they saw the miracles He performed and heard His majestic preaching. They spread this around rapidly, as all reports do. The leper heard and believed.

When people asked Jesus, He answered. The framing of this question is good to remember. The leper said, "If you will it to be..." The leper promised nothing because he had nothing. The lepers in the New Testament are examples for us, because the Old Adam wants to drive a bargain, to swap good works for a an answer to prayer. But there are no good works for a leper to do, in that age, in that society.

No one came to Jesus asking and was turned down, so this is the emphasis of the first miracle. Jesus said, "I will - be cleansed." And the leprosy was erased. If you have any disease that marks the outside of the body, then the thought of that instant healing is a wonder in itself - no chemicals, no radiation, no electric burn, no cutting.

And it symbolizes our forgiveness. If it is your will, forgive my sins. Jesus says it is His will. "Be cleansed."

At the center of all genuine worship is repentance and forgiveness. God erases what only God can.

Without faith, no one can discover this peace. Some lose their faith and repeat the words, to make a good impression. But God knows the counsels of the heart. Pretending faith is not faith, and God hardens those who retreat from His blessings.

Last night and in class this morning (online - you were not up yet), the question arose. What is the relationship between faith and good works. The Calvinists and Roman Catholics combine faith and good works. Rome says good works must be added to faith for (partial) forgiveness. They call that Fides Formata, faith formed by good works. The Calvinists say, "The gift of salvation is a demand (for good works)," as stated by Karl Barth, the adulterous Swiss commie apostate.

But Jesus said, the good tree must bear good fruit. And that good tree is the person who has faith in Christ. This is how the Gospel works, and it is the reason why seminar students should garden until they understand that. Good plants necessarily bear fruit, according to the design of Creation. We take that for granted, but it is still true.

We were created for good works, as Ephesians teaches, but that does not happen apart from faith. If someone is lacking in good works, he should ask himself if he is truly repentant. Lack of contrition hardens the heart until no faith is left. That is why some go through the motions and say the words, but do not mean it. This attitude is the source of so much suffering in the apostate mainline denominations, which the Lutherans have joined in heading down the drain - all the established Lutheran groups, sad to say.

4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

When Jesus commanded the leper to go to the priest, He was ordering the healed man to take the Gospel to the priest, to give that priest a chance to believe, to see with his own eyes. This is another example of God's grace, to offer salvation and peace to someone who might be blind to the Gospel.

5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, 6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. 7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

Here is an example of another emphasis or lesson in the miracle. The first was about the leper's complete lack of outward merit in receiving a miracle. He only had faith.

This was a very important Roman officer, supposedly a pagan, who came to Jesus asking for a miracle for his servant. This centurion had heard the report (Romans 10, Isaiah 53) and believed. Therefore he asked in faith and Jesus offered to come to his house.

Jesus did this knowing what was in the heart of the centurion. He had complete faith in God's Word and understood the unlimited power of that Word. This power is taught throughout the Bible, but no longer grasped in any sense by the fallen away Christians, who ape the faith without having faith (John Lawrenz, John Brug, the entire Church Growth business enterprise).

I do not ask if the morning rain will have any effect. I know it will. Nothing could be better for the seeds I planted. They will grow because of rain falling. And they will provide food for the eater and seed for the sower. I have potentially thousands of seeds in that  future harvest.

So the centurion knew this about God's Word. Perhaps he read the Greek Old Testament, since educated Roman knew Greek quite well and had access to literature. At any rate, God's Word belongs to God and no one else. So the centurion compared God's Word to his knowledge of command. This should give you goose-bumps.

This is the comparison often found in the Old Testament, the lesser to the greater. If it is true of the lesser, it is also true, or even more true of the greater. Like the leper, he has nothing to offer. He is not even worthy to have Jesus in his home. But he knows this. Just as he can issue an order without even seeing a soldier, and it will be obeyed, so can Jesus issue a command and it will be obeyed.

Jesus marveled at this soldier's faith, but He also said this as a warning. Although many will come from outside of Judaism, those who should inherit the Kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness, where they will suffer enormously.

13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

As in other miracles, Jesus only had to say the Word, and the miracle took place that moment. So it is when anything we take before Him in faith. He answers. It is His will, and He will provide a remedy in the best possible way and time. We ask in trust and receive in trust, knowing this to be true.
