The Feeding of the Multitude, by Norma  A. Boeckler

LAETARE. FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

TEXT: John 6:1-15. After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they beheld the signs which he did on them that were sick. And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. Now the passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great multitude cometh unto him, saith unto Philip, Whence are we to buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred shillings worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes: but what are these among so many? Jesus said, Make the people sit down.

Now there was much grass in the place: So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Jesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would. And when they were filled, he saith unto his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which remain over, that nothing be lost. So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which remained over unto them that had eaten. When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, This is of a truth the prophet that cometh into the world.

Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.

I. THE FEEDING OF THE FIVE THOUSAND.

1. In today’s Gospel Christ gives us another lesson in faith, that we should not be over-anxious about our daily bread and our temporal existence, and stirs us up by means of a miracle; as though to say by his act what he says by his words in Matthew 6:33: “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” For here we see, since the people followed Christ for the sake of God’s Word and the signs, and thus sought the Kingdom of God, he did not forsake them but richly fed them. He hereby also shows that, rather than those who seek the Kingdom of God should suffer need, the grass in the desert would become wheat, or a crumb of bread would be turned into a thousand loaves; or a morsel of bread would feed as many people and just as satisfactorily as a thousand loaves; in order that the words in Matthew 4:4 might stand firm, that “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” And to confirm these words Christ is the first to be concerned about the people, as to what they should eat, and asks Philip, before they complain or ask him; so that we may indeed let him care for us, remembering that he cares more and sooner for us than we do for ourselves.

2. Secondly, he gives an example of great love, and he does this in many ways. First, in that he lets not only the pious, who followed him because of the signs and the Word, enjoy the food; but also the slaves of appetite, who only eat and drink, and seek in him temporal honor; as follows later when they disputed with him at Capernaum about the food, and he said to them in John 6:26: “Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves,” etc., also because they desired to make him king; thus here also he lets his sun shine on the evil and the good, Matthew 5:45.

Secondly, in that he bears with the rudeness and weak faith of his disciples in such a friendly manner. For that he tests Philip, who thus comes with his reason, and Andrew speaks so childishly on the subject, all is done to bring to light the imperfections of the disciples, and on the contrary to set forth his love and dealings with them in a more beautiful and loving light, to encourage us to believe in him, and to give us an example to do likewise; as the members of our body and all God’s creatures in their relation to one another teach us. For these are full of love, so that one bears with the other, helps and preserves what God has created.

3. That he now takes the five loaves and gives thanks etc., teaches that nothing is too small and insignificant for him to do for his followers, and he can indeed so bless their pittance that they have an abundance, whereas even the rich have not enough with all their riches; as Psalm 34:11 says: “They that seek Jehovah shall not want any good thing; but the rich must suffer hunger.” And Mary in her song of praise says: “The hungry he hath filled with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.” Luke 1:53.

4. Again, that he tells them so faithfully to gather up the fragments, teaches us to be frugal and to preserve and use his gifts, in order that we may not tempt God. For just as it is God’s will that we should believe when we have nothing and be assured that he will provide; so he does not desire to be tempted, nor to allow the blessings he has bestowed to be despised, or lie unused and spoil, while we expect other blessings from heaven by means of miracles. Whatever he gives, we should receive and use, and what he does not give, we should believe and expect he will bestow.

II. THE ALLEGORICAL INTERPRETATION.

5. That Christ by the miraculous feeding of the five thousand has encouraged us to partake of a spiritual food, and taught that we should seek and expect from him nourishment for the soul, is clearly proved by the whole sixth chapter of John, in which he calls himself the bread from heaven and the true food, and says: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled. Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you.” John 6:26-27. In harmony with these words we will, explain also this evangelical history in its spiritual meaning and significance.

6. First, there was much hay or grass in the place. The Evangelist could not fail to mention that, although it appears to be unnecessary; however it signifies the Jewish people, who flourished and blossomed like the grass through their outward holiness, wisdom, honor, riches etc., as Isaiah 40:6-7, says: “All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the breath of Jehovah bloweth upon it; surely the people is grass.” From the Jewish people the Word of God went forth and the true food was given to us; for salvation is of the Jews, John 4:22. Now, as grass is not food for man, but for cattle; so is all the holiness of the outward Jewish righteousness nothing but food for animals, for fleshly hearts, who know and possess nothing of the Spirit.

7. The very same is taught by the people sitting on the grass; for the true saints despise outward holiness, as Paul does in Philippians 3:8, in that he counted his former righteousness to be filth and even a hindrance. Only common and hungry people receive the Word of God and are nourished by it. For here you see that neither Caiaphas nor Anna, neither the Pharisees nor the Scribes follow Christ and see Christ’s Signs; but they disregard them, they are grass and feed on grass. This miracle was also performed near the festive time of the Jewish passover; for the true Easter festival, when Christ should be offered as a sacrifice, was near, when he began to feed them with the Word of God.

8. The five loaves signify the outward, natural word formed by the voice and understood by man’s senses; for the number five signifies outward things pertaining to the five senses of man by which he lives; as also the five and five virgins illustrate in Matthew 25:1. These loaves are in the basket, that is, locked up in the Scriptures. And a lad carries them, that means the servant class and the priesthood among the Jews, who possessed the sayings of God, which were placed in their charge and entrusted to them, Romans 3:2, although they did not enjoy them. But that Christ took these into his own hands, and they were thereby blessed and increased, signifies that by Christ’s works and deeds, and not by our deeds or reason, are the Scriptures explained, rightly understood and preached.

This he gives to his disciples, and the disciples to the people. For Christ takes the Word out of the Scriptures; so all teachers receive it from Christ and give it to the people, by which is confirmed what Matthew 23:10 says: “For one is your master, even the Christ,” who sits in heaven, and he teaches all only through the mouth and the word of preachers by his: Spirit, that is, against false teachers, who teach their own wisdom.

9. The two fishes are the example and witness of the patriarchs and prophets, who are also in the basket; for by them the Apostles confirm and strengthen their doctrine and the believers like St. Paul does in Romans 4:2-6, where he cites Abraham and David etc. But there are two, because the examples of the saints are full of love, which cannot be alone, as faith can, but must go out in exercise to its neighbor. Furthermore the fishes were prepared and cooked; for such examples are indeed put to death by many sufferings and martyrdoms, so that we find nothing carnal in them, and they comfort none by a false faith in his own works, but always point to faith and put to death works and their assurance.

10. The twelve baskets of fragments are all the writings and books the Apostles and Evangelists bequeathed to us; therefore they are twelve, like the Apostles, and these books are nothing but that which remains from and has been developed out of the Old Testament. The fishes are also signified by the number five (Moses’ books); as John 21:25 says: “Even the world itself would not contain the books that should be written” concerning Christ, all which nevertheless was written and proclaimed before in the Old Testament concerning Christ.

11. That Philip gives counsel as how to feed the people with his few shillings, and yet doubts, signifies human teachers, who would gladly aid the soul with their teachings; but their conscience feels it helps nothing. For the discussion Christ here holds with his disciples takes place in order that we may see and understand that it is naturally impossible to feed so many people through our own counsel, and that this sign might be the more public. Thus he lets us also disgrace ourselves and labor with human doctrines, that we may see and understand how necessary and precious God’s Word is and how doctrines do not help the least without God’s Word.

12. That Andrew pointed out the lad and the loaves, and yet doubted still more than Philip, signifies the teachers who wish to make the people pious and to quiet them with God’s laws; but their conscience has no satisfaction or peace in them; but only becomes continually worse, until Christ comes with his Word of grace. He is the one, and he alone, who makes satisfaction, delivers from sin and death, gives peace and fullness of joy, and does it all of his own free will, gratuitously, against and above all hope and presumption, that we may know that the Gospel is devised and bestowed, not through our own merit, but out of pure grace.

13. Finally, you see in this Gospel that Christ, though he held Gospel poverty in the highest esteem and was not anxious about the morrow, as he teaches in Matthew 6:34, had still some provisions, as the two hundred shillings, the five loaves and the two fishes; in order that we may learn how such poverty and freedom from care consist not in having nothing at all, as the barefooted fanatics and monks profess, and yet they themselves do not hold to it; but it consists in a free heart and a poor spirit. For even Abraham and Isaac had great possessions, and yet they lived without worry and in poverty, like the best Christians do.

KJV Galatians 4:21 Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? 22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. 24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. 26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. 27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. 28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. 29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. 30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Fourth Sunday In Lent
Lord God, heavenly Father, who by Thy Son didst feed five thousand men in the desert with five loaves and two fishes: We beseech Thee to abide graciously also with us in the fullness of Thy blessing. Preserve us from avarice and the cares of this life, that we may seek first Thy kingdom and Thy righteousness, and in all things perceive Thy fatherly goodness, through Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God world without end. Amen.

Bread from Heaven

KJV John 6:1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. 2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

In this miracle, God provides in a miraculous way, without anyone imagining how they would be taken care of. This mass of people followed Jesus out, without considered the practical consequences of a multitude being where there was no food.

This miracle is a wonderful way to consider how God works, because both sides had reason to panic and be filled with dread. The multitude came out without food for the journey home. They were attracted to the miracles, stirring up their faith and their hopes. The Messianic literature promised that these things would be true of the Christ. Faith in Jesus was growing, and so was idle curiosity.

3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

The vantage point of Jesus and the disciples allowed them to see the progress of the multitude as they walked around the Sea of Galilee. The practical ones would wonder and ask, "What will we do with all these people when they run out of food?" People forget that the desert is just as demanding of calories as a winter day is. People burn up calories in the sun, and begin growing weak. They had water available at the oasis, but water on an empty stomach is not satisfying at all.

But they were there because of faith, however slight, in this great Teacher and miracle-worker. As children, and perhaps as adults, we think about being able to see great miracles like this one. I walk down our little street and see the miracle of life bursting into bloom in the spring. That life is so completely hidden that everything seems dead. I watched the plans go into their winter sleep in the yard. The parsley was the last to go, bright and green for a long time into December, then knocked out by a hard frost.

I thought, once again, "Roses are the ugliest plants of all in winter, with nothing to show except brown branches and thorns." The sun followed the rain and all of them burst into tiny leaves, more red than green.

4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. 5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

Now the appearances are bad. Anyone can figure that out. The crowd thinks, "We can find plenty of water, but what about food?" The disciples looked at the multitude and Jesus expressed their dread and foreboding. "Where do we buy enough food?" - which is really asking, "How is it possible to provide for them out here?"

7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

Philip said, "Impossible!" but in a roundabout way. A lot of bread would hardly be sufficient, and there is no Panera in sight. We were driving Team Jackson in a big van, out in the Arizona desert, and we had a similar situation with fuel. The gauge was going down to E and no town was in sight. When one popped up, it seemed so far away. The needle kept dipping downward, and thoughts of roasting within sight of the town kept dominating my thoughts.

8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, 9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

This is a classic case, certainly one followed carefully verses 8 and 9 only. "We have a little, but that nothing compared to what we need." Despair. Gloom. Pessimism. That is so natural to us that it is remarkable when people trust in those modest or even miniscule amounts to accomplish anything.

Jesus did not explain but commanded them to seat the multitude in the grassy oasis. We know plenty of water was there, because grass does not grow unless there is plenty of water. Five thousand sat down.

This enormous number shows us that the miracle will be a great one, far beyond our ability to predict. Rationalism tries to explain it, but that is ridiculous. (That is the hiding the lunch scenario, which means they had tons of food hidden away, so much that they had large amounts of leftovers. This would be called the Lesson of the Hidden Lunches Shared Because the Boy Was Generous.) So much for unbelief, which reduces a miracle to an absurd morality tale.

11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

In giving thanks and distributing the bread, Jesus is foreshadowing the Last Supper. Luther took chapter 6 away from Zwingli because the Swiss rationalist wanted to make the Lord's Supper merely symbolic. The place to start is the Consecration in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and 1 Corinthians. Four basic examples eliminate what Zwingli would like to promote. Thus chapter 6 is not primarily about Holy Communion but certainly reflects on it in the future. All Scripture passages are in harmony with each other, so that is always kept in mind. The bright passages, as they say, illuminate the dark (for us) verses.

To start with a dark passage is like saying, "I can speed because people do that in emergencies. If it is right for them, it is right for me."

The point of this miracle is to show us that the Word of God accomplishes great miracles with little or nothing. All the great works of God have started with little or nothing, often with weak and despised people too. Lutherans have forgotten the Inner Mission movement, which carried over into America from Europe. Theodor Fliedner was the least likely. One traveled to gain money to keep his parish alive. That inspired him to train young women as deaconesses, which led through Florence Nightingale (another unusual figure) to the modern nursing movement.

 Theodor Fliedner founded Kaiserwerth.
 Florence Nightingale

Wiki:
"Later in 1850, she visited the Lutheran religious community at Kaiserswerth-am-Rhein in Germany, where she observed Pastor Theodor Fliedner and the deaconesses working for the sick and the deprived. She regarded the experience as a turning point in her life, and issued her findings anonymously in 1851; The Institution of Kaiserswerth on the Rhine, for the Practical Training of Deaconesses, etc. was her first published work.[15] She also received four months of medical training at the institute, which formed the basis for her later care."

The boosters and cheerleaders want to point to the persons, but it was God's will that these two unusual characters accomplish so much in relieving the pain and disease of vast multitudes. And this spread across America in various nursing homes, orphanages, and hospitals - and the training of nurses. We used Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, which was started by the German Evangelical-Reformed (now UCC) leaders. These institutions multiplied until people took them for granted. And it all came from so little.

This miracle shows the efficacy of the Word. Jesus commanded and the miracle was accomplished, simply by thanking or blessing and distributing.

Luther:

12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. 13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

Nothing is wasted in God's Kingdom. I have plenty of opportunities to teach that in our neighborhood. I point out that Creation principles will serve people far better and cost less than their solutions from the chemical toxins of the stores.

"Look close to the flowers on a calm sunny day. Those little Flower Flies are destroying pests. Do you want to spray them and kill off two generations at once? Spiders are all over the garden if you leave them alone. Spray once or use them 24/7? God designed these beneficial creatures for a purpose.

Many different conversations pop up as people consider the infinite number of dependencies within God's Creation. First He created through the Word, with perfect engineering, and perfect management. The intricacies of timing and attraction fill books.

14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. 15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

It needs to be remembered that as much as Christ did, people still got His role wrong. Thus the greatest that God does is often misunderstood and manipulated into something bade.

This disgusting ad for Thrivent should be an alarm, especially since Otten ran a piece about how much LCMS members favor abortion. The cults are more pro-life than the LCMS, home of Walther, UOJ, and bed-fellow with ELCA.

When certain LCMS grandees found out that Thrivent was giving Choice matching grants to Planned Parenthood, they had a snit for several weeks. They never let on that this information was published on this blog five years previously.

Thrivent responded by dropping Planned Parenthood and all pro-life groups. The pro-life groups howled, making me wonder why anyone wanted to be associated with a genocidal "Lutheran" insurance business largely surrendered to ELCA.

Doubtless Team Otten will claim that Thrivent does not currently give Choice grants to Planned Parenthood. But does Thrivent pay for abortions in its health plan, following the ELCA protocol for paying for any abortion for any reason? I am quite sure they do, because the Left maintains its butt-hurt when offended - until and unless appeased. The summer warriors of the right maintain BH for only two weeks and then concede.

And does Thrivent offer abortion-promoting grants through its leaky sieve of grants here, there, and everywhere? I am quite sure money gets through to Planned Parenthood and allied causes.

Otten, WELS, Missouri, and the ELS prove that the more an entity relies on outside funds, the less it has - and the more it begs. The synods have unleashed their Thrivent bagmen on helpless seniors, to sign away their estates with Irrevocable Gift Trusts, the commission going to the Thrivent "Planned Giving Counselor" Ima  Hogg. God has called them into this special ministry, doncha know, as long as they get an insurance and annuity sales license first.

Abortion and Child Trafficking Only Hint at the Magnitude of the Evil in America - And the World

I have followed Roman Catholic scandals since 1987. When I look through RC graphics on my computer, I try to remember the story with so many cardinals and the long history of other abusive Catholic leaders being protected and promoted. Two of the worst abusers of all time were honored at the Vatican, as if Rome were consciously copying the style of the Michigan District of WELS.

 Thank Q.

First of all, these scandals are world-wide and much larger in scope - more hideously evil than people could imagine. Keep that in mind when reading the news and watching these overlapping issues boil over.

As bad as the abortion industry is, it has served to numb and blind the American people to the cancerous growth stemming from this fundamental disregard for innocent life.

I am not going to pursue the details, only alert the readers to be following various forms of Internet research. The manic screaming of the established media is useful, but not to learn the news. The howls come from the knowledge they are losing and cannot fool everyone all the time.

We had some recent thank-you notes from people who have participated in our Sunday or mid-week services.

One came from the Upper Midwest, when the flu kept the couple from attending their home church. They were pleased we devoted the service to Gerhardt hymns.

Another household was experiencing a lack of mobility, so our service provided an alternative to pain and night driving.

The powerful snowstorms in the East meant that one man did not have to skip worship on Wednesday night - he could be with us.

We have viewers in New York State, Iowa, and Michigan, too, plus a cluster on the Left Coast. Australia? Yes.

Sassy Sue's Goodnight Routines

I post about our three-legged wonder dog Sassy Sue so her foster parents can read the post. I promised photo updates for them, and I know they look for them, from time to time.

One of the Fox Valley sourpuss pastors complained, "He even writes about his dog."If one of them would visit a library or bookstore, it would become apparent that writing about dogs is just as popular as reading about them.

Sassy has an unusual bedtime routine. We are with her about 22 hours a day, and she is a real talker. She makes a lot of different noises and loves to have fun with us.

Sassy is half Red Healer and half German Shepherd.
She goes through the vocal range of both, and the super-smart independent nature of both breeds.

Sassy Initiates
Sometimes, she comes up to us on the bed and taps me with her paw, grinning. That is my signal to pet her and tell her what a great dog she is, how many people love her. Then she turns to Chris and does the same thing. Settling down, Sassy falls asleep soon after.

Sassy lost her leg from a horse kicking her and her family's subsequent neglect. The rescue society provided her operation and recovery time.
Everyone loves her gentle, loving face.

Bad Staff Evals - Sassy Is Upset
On other nights Sassy begins making low, complaining sounds. "What's up with Sassy?" I tell Chris, "Staff evaluations are in, and they are not good." Chris says, "Did we fail you again, Sassy? Miserable howls follow. So we go through things we should have done - food, walk...Frosty Paws. The mention of Frosty Paws ice cream for pets has Sassy barking loudly. Apologies follow and I promise to get the Frosty Paws.

Sassy is kind enough to show us where the food is, so she points with her nose - out the door toward the kitchen, the path to Frosty Paws. I use ordinary ice cream, and Sassy gets one teaspoon per night. But this is a non-negotiable demand, as they say, and it must be delivered for a night's sleep.

Her Head on the Bed
Another way Sassy goes to bed is to get her head under my hand, grinning at me as I pet her. She keeps her head flat on the bed and enjoys her head being stroked. We work over her ears, which really delights her. We also discuss her day and the friends she has made. She loves to hear Sassy stories and gets quite animated about her best friends.

Every dog at the dogpark was jealous of Sassy's fame
with the ball and her retrieval of it, placing it in my hands.
We sang a song about that, and she howled for the chorus.

Must Make My Bed for the Night
Sassy may drop off to sleep in one corner of the bed, but she often needs to scratch up a nest for the night. She scratches on covers with manic glee. We keep a layer of thick old covers there for that purpose. Pillows may fly and blankets may fall off. Sometimes we stop her, but then she starts over. Sometimes she just stops and falls down in place.

Our granddaughter held this pose while I got the camera,
but Sassy came into the frame for the laughs.
No one was hurt.

Making Us Laugh Out Loud
Sassy's funniest moves have developed over the years. She decided to scratch on an antique table to get my attention. Once she realized how funny I thought it was, she scratched and grinned me. That gesture meant, "I need something from you."

When the table was moved, she used the room air filter. We repeated the shock and then enjoyed the humor of it. When the filter was out of her reach, she began raising her paw and scratching in the air, a gesture so hilarious that I laughed every time.

Likewise, Sassy has done what all dogs have accomplished. She managed to get rewarded for going outside and coming back in. At first she glared at me until she got a tiny treat, standing still, glued to the kitchen floor. Later I promised a treat if she went to see her mom in the bedroom. So I waited in the bathroom to see what would happen. Each time Sassy stayed just inside the bedroom door and peered out to see if I was getting her treat. I tried not to laugh, but the Reaganesque "trust but verify" was too funny. I peered out my doorway each time - and still do - and see her looking out of hers.

Sassy has been called The Chauffeur
because she waits in the driver's seat and visits through the open window.

 Carl Manthey-Zorn - devil's horns?
or hookem Longhorns?

Someone asked about Zorn (German for anger), and I looked him up to see how UOJ he was. Given that people sighed like love-struck teens over his name, I guessed he was.

Doug Lindee, WEL-DONA layman, wrote this about Zorn and SynCon history, 2010.

Here is a 2010 post by WEL-DONA Pastor Paul Rydecki - Something To Chew On, citing and linking the mixed up essay by Marquart that Jay Webber adores.

Rydecki's was mercifully short, but both suffer from the same SynConferenceCentric thinking. Everything starts with Walther and his fellow Pietists, but absent their criminal acts in Dresden and America. There follows a verbose history of conflicts started by CFW Walther, BA, and his disciples, examined in obsessive detail.

This navel-gazing approach, which is normative in WELS-ELS-LCMS, displaces the Scriptures, the Book of Concord, Luther, and Chemnitz. Worst of all, the SynCon jabberboxes are like all Enthusiasts - they do not trust the efficacious Word but want everyone to venerate their endless supply of words, a veritable volcano of vowels.

We should not speculate on Election (where is that statement found? Bueller, Bueller, anyone, anyone?) so they spend a century or more speculating on Election.

And they haul out their experts on Synodical Conference history, which makes people wonder, "Have Lutherans fashioned their own Babylonia Talmud, with layer upon layer of interpretation?" Now let us study the Intrepids on Marquart on the Synodical Conference interpretation of Walther, who kelmed Stephan. (Oops, cannot mention except to say the bishop deserved to be robbed and needed to be kidnapped.)

The answer to Justification is found as the summary of Romans 4, by itself a brilliant, clear lesson on Abraham as the first one Justified by Faith in the Savior, making him the Father of Nations and the example of faith.

Here is the summary statement about Romans 4 -

Romans 4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Professor Honsey was always mentioned with great affection. He passed away some months ago, but I wanted
to note his service in education.

Professor Emeritus Rudolph Honsey passes away | Bethany Lutheran College:

"S.C. Ylvisaker, Bethany’s president at the time, needed new faculty members to teach the growing numbers of students on the Bethany campus. More and more young men were returning from serving in the United States military during World War II and were looking for educational options. Ylvisaker recognized Honsey’s talent and personality and thought it would be a good fit for the Bethany campus. So, before Honsey could deliver his first sermon at a Synodical Conference Lutheran church, Ylvisaker convinced him to accept a temporary call to teach at Bethany. The call was made permanent in 1946. During his years in academia at Bethany, Honsey also studied at University of Chicago, Mankato State College, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin where he earned a master of arts in Scandinavian Studies in 1955, and Brandeis University where he earned a master of arts in Mediterranean Studies in 1962. "

Jack and Robert Preus were both at Bethany,
and Robert left his book collection to Bethany's library.

Not Picking on ELDONA , But Definitely Picking on the Synodical Conference Mindset

$

 The Stephanite cult was Pietistic?
Yes, they had special rules allowing them to have their cell group meetings at the church, in spite of state law against conventicles.

Someone got the idea that I was picking on ELDONA, specifically WEL-DONA in this linked post. WEL-DONA members are those who were in WELS and immediately silenced themselves once they joined ELDONA. But that is another story.

I ran into some links from the so-called Intrepid Lutherans, founded by Steve Spencer - who bailed out first - and those posts reminded me of the Synodical Conference disease.

The SynCon (for short) caught this disease from Walther, who imagined himself The Great Prophet sent by God

  1. to explain all matters,
  2. to condemn anyone opposed to his zany ideas,
  3. to subvert and replace Luther and the Book of Concord.
The method is simple - start with Walther and his disciples, quote this band of criminals as if they were the Twelve Apostles, and simply avoid the ruling norm of the Scriptures and the ruled norm of the Confessions.

That is where the current crowd of UOJ Stormtroopers got their whackadoodle ideas about the doctrine of Luther, the Book of Concord, and various others. If Walther and Company are wrong, then the heavens will come crashing down on us.

To quote John Sparky Brenner, they do not lead people into the Scriptures or from the Scriptures.

The Calvinists led the Lutherans into squirrel chases using Latin terms and philosophical reasoning. That became so sterile, long after the Formula of Concord era, that Pietism erupted as an answer. However, the rationalistic and philosophical style remained. How was Walther trained? -
  1. Rationalism for his BA and ordination.
  2. Pietism from two abusive cell group leaders.
Stephan did emphasize the Book of Concord more than most at his time, but he mostly taught Himself, which meant he was the sole Means of Grace in Europe. Thus Walther and Company made him Bishop-for-Life. No wonder the Stephan sect members were confused and in disarray after robbing and kidnapping the Means of Grace, forcing Stephan over to Illinois.

Thus I quoted the entire fourth chapter of Romans - not so long - with the transitional conclusion of that chapter - Romans 5:1-2.

That alone refutes the entire corpus of UOJ, which is a vast ocean - two inches deep.

Hi Pastor,

We read your blog today saying somebody berated you for writing and blogging about your dog. Low blow; such a mean spirit. We want you to know that we quite enjoy reading the Sassy stories, as she is our virtual pup (we have no pets); and we love reading about roses. Some pastors blog about dogs and roses; other "pastors" blog and vlog about their AR-15s, tactical shotguns, and 100-round magazines. Such is life.

It's OK that you didn't mention folks in the South that also follow your sermons. No hurt feelings here - LOL.

Progress on Luther's Sermons

Lutheran leaders and Luther - but we do pay them, far too much.

Volume 6 had a cover issue, which is being fixed.

Volume 7 is with our finishing editor, Janie Sullivan.

Volume 8 is being illustrated by Norma A. Boeckler. After that, I will add the gems and send the file to Janie Sullivan.

Next -

Gems Mined from Luther's Sermons will be compiled as the final volume, selections from each of the 8 volumes. That will be all color and a good way to introduce people to Luther's sermons. Every pastor should have it for sermon illustrations. They cover the entire church year, Gospels and Epistles, and not from the papal three-year invention. The papacy is the Antichrist, so Lutheran leaders go to Rome for leadership in worship.

Prayers without faith ne'er to Heaven go.
I never agreed with CN's anti-Christian UOJ.

After that -

The Commentary on John, Greek and KJV, will be prepared. This is not intended to be one of those 1500 page editions, but a basic guide and introduction.

Luther's Two Catechisms - planned.

Luther's Galatians Commentary -  planned.

Lutheran dictionary - planned.

How Calvinism Ruined the Protestants - being worked on, but will follow the ones named above.

Luther on the Seditious Leaders and Self-Secure Spirits

$

Ah, these seditious leaders and other self-secure spirits are poor, miserable people, who know nothing at all of this conflict! They drown in their own imaginations, and think they are perfect. And some of them are so shameless and without fear as to blaspheme, saying that God himself could not take their virtue from them. The devil simply strengthens them in these thoughts, and hardens them the more. This very thing is a sign that they do not yet know the devil; they are already blinded and taken captive by him, so that he can ruin them when he pleases.
#77. Third Sunday after Trinity, Luther's Sermons, Volume 8

And in the same sermon -

82. When the devil plagues and assails thee with his manifold temptations, refer him to Christ, with whom to dispute about the severe temptations, the death struggle, the anguish of hell, etc. Comfort thyself that thou art one of a great company of sufferers, past present and future. O beautiful, glorious company! All under one lord and head, who took from the devil his power and hellfire. In short, thy affliction cannot prove so great that thou wilt not find it paralleled in the lives of the apostles, prophets, patriarchs and all the saints, especially of Christ himself; with whom, if we suffer, let us not doubt, says Paul, that we shall “be also glorified,” Romans 8:17.

The Devil Builds His Taverns and Kitchens

2. Well, we cannot altogether prevent inharmony in the Church. Paul says (1 Corinthians 11:19), “For there must be also factions among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you.” Wherever the Word of God has a foothold, there the devil will be. By the agency of his factions he will always build his taverns and kitchens beside God’s house. So he did at first, in Paradise. In the family of Adam he entrenched himself, establishing there his church. And such has been his practice ever since, and doubtless will ever be. He who takes offense at differences in the Church, who when he sees any inharmony at once concludes there is no Church there, will in the end miss both the Church and Christ. You will never find any congregation of such purity that all its members are unanimous on every point of belief and teaching and all live in perfect harmony.

41. Christians, however, though obliged to live among swine and to be at times trampled underfoot and rooted about, have nevertheless surpassing glory; for they can look up and intelligently behold their Lord and his gifts. They are not of the pen of swine intended only for slaughter; they know themselves children of God, adorned by him with gifts and graces not merely temporal. They are conscious that, having given them body and life — for these they realize are not of their own obtaining — he will also supply their further needs, providing for them forever.
Luther's Sermons, Volume 8,Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Greatness of God Unequaled

43. Regarding the baptizer — who may be a woman even — and the baptized, we certainly can see nothing wonderful. The humanity in the case does not effect any great work; the work is wrought by him who is God, Lord and Spirit. It is he who gives to the office power and greatness above that of all emperors, kings and lords, however inferior the instrumentality — the occupants of the sacred offices. By these ministrations souls are won from the devil, snatched out of hell and transformed into saints blessed forever. Person and office may be apparently inferior, but the office is of God and God is no inferior being. His greatness cannot be equaled by a hundred thousand worlds. He accomplishes things incomprehensible to the world and impossible to angels. The combined efforts of all creation could not produce baptism. Were the world to unite in baptizing an infant, the infant would receive no good therefrom unless God the Lord commanded the deed.
Luther's Sermons, Volume 8,Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Glory Which Every Preacher May Claim

9. It is a glory which every preacher may claim, to be able to say with full confidence of heart: “This trust have I toward God in Christ, that what I teach and preach is truly the Word of God.” Likewise, when he performs other official duties in the Church — baptizes a child, absolves and comforts a sinner — it must be done in the same firm conviction that such is the command of Christ.
Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

If the Doctrine of Faith in Christ Be Left Out…

In short, there can be no New Testament preached if the doctrine of faith in Christ be left out; the spirit cannot enter into the heart, but all teaching, endeavor, reflection, works and power remain mere “letters,” devoid of grace, truth, and life. Without Christ the heart remains unchanged and unrenewed. It has no more power to fulfill the Law than the book in which the Ten Commandments are written, or the stones upon which engraved. “For the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
#36, Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

Efficacy and Bearing Fruit

20. Not only preachers, but all Christians, should constantly entreat the God who grants knowledge to grant also efficacy; should beseech him that the Word may not pass with the utterance, but may manifest itself in power. The prevailing complaint at present is that much preaching obtains, but no practice; that the people are shamefully rude, cold and indolent, and less active than ever, while at the same time they enjoy the strong, clear light of revelation concerning all right and wrong in the world. Well may we pray, then, as Paul does here. He says, in effect: “You are well supplied: the Word is richly proclaimed to you — abundantly poured out upon you. But I bend my knees to God, praying that he may add his blessing to the Word and grant you to behold his honor and praise and to be firmly established, that the Word may grow in you and yield fruit.”
Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

Where the Spirit Is, Faith Must Obtain

36. A third answer to our enemies is: We are certain that wherever the Word of God is proclaimed, the fruits of the same must exist. We have the Word of God, and therefore the Spirit of God must be with us. And where the Spirit is, faith must obtain, however weak it may be. Though visible evidence may be lacking, yet inevitably there must be some among us who daily pray, while we may not be aware of it. It is reasonably to be expected that our enemies should judge erroneously, because they look for outward evidences of Christianity, which are not forthcoming. The Word is too sublime to pass under our judgment; it is the province of the Word to judge us. The world, however, while unwilling to be judged and convicted by us, essays to judge and convict the Word of God. Here God steps in. It would be a pity for the worldly to see a godly Christian, so God blinds them and they miss his kingdom.
Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

Creating Discord - Walther's UOJ and Election without Faith

18. One of the wickedest offenses possible to commit against the Church is the stirring up of doctrinal discord and division, a thing the devil encourages to the utmost. This sin usually has its rise with certain haughty, conceited, self-seeking leaders who desire peculiar distinction for themselves and strive for personal honor and glory. They harmonize with none and would think themselves disgraced were they not honored as superior and more learned individuals than their fellows, a distinction they do not merit. They will give honor to no one, even when they have to recognize the superiority of his gifts over their own. In their envy, anger, hatred and vengefulness, they seek occasion to create factions and to draw people to themselves. Therefore Paul exhorts first to the necessary virtue of love, having which men will be enabled to exercise humility, patience and forbearance toward one another.
Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

The Christian Treasure

14. The Christian has indeed inestimable treasure. In the first place he has the testimony of the Word of God, which is the word of eternal grace and comfort, that he has a right and true conception of baptism, the Lord’s Supper, the Ten Commandments and the Creed. In addition, he has the sure refuge of God’s promise to deliver us from every trouble in which we shall call upon him, and to give us, as he promised by the prophet Zechariah 12:10, the Spirit of grace and of prayer. And the Christian, by virtue of his enlightened understanding, can wisely discern what are good works and what callings are pleasing to God; on the other hand, his judgment is equally true as to unprofitable and vain works and false services. Before, we had not this wholesome knowledge. We knew not what we believed, or how we prayed and lived. We sought comfort and salvation in self-devised trivialities, in penances, confessions and satisfactions, in self-righteous works of monkery and in obedience to the commands of the Pope. We believed such works to be fully satisfactory and, indeed, the only things that were holy; the pursuits of common Christians we considered worldly and dangerous.
Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity

Whose Fault?
28. And so Paul, when here extolling the Corinthians, has not an eye to the contentious, the Epicureans, or to those who give public offense, as the man that “had his father’s wife;” but the apostle looks to the fact that a few remain who have the pure Word of God, faith, baptism and the sacrament, though some hypocrites be among them. Because of these few — and few indeed there may be — we recognize the presence of that inestimable treasure of which the apostle speaks. It is found as well where two or three are gathered together as with thousands. Neither the Gospel nor the ministers nor the Church is to be blamed that the multitude miss this treasure; the multitude have but themselves to blame, for they close their ears and eyes.

About the Author
About the Author – Egerton R. Young
…It was the comfort of the great apostle to the Gentiles that with a clear conscience he could say, “I have kept back nothing that was profitable for you,” and that when he knew that those among whom he had gone preaching the kingdom of God, would see his face no more, he could boldly “take them to record,” that he was pure from the blood of all men, and had “not shunned to declare all the counsel of God.” However materialists may oppose amid the thickening troubles of these ungodly days; however distasteful it may be to the carnal mind; however scorners may jest and sneer; the ambassador of God must boldly deliver unto the people, all that they have received of the Lord. – From Chapter 20.

“Egerton Ryerson Young was born at Smith’s Falls, Ontario, April 7, 1840. He was educated at the Normal School of the Province of Ontario, after having taught for several years, and in 1863 entered the ministry. Four years later he was ordained, and, after being stationed at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Hamilton, Ontario, in 1867-68, was sent as a missionary to Norway House, North-West Territory. There he worked among the Indians for five years, and in 1873 went in a similar capacity to Beren’s River, Northwest Territory, where he remained three years (1873-76). In 1876 he returned to Ontario and was stationed successively at Port Perry (1876-79), Colborne (1879-82), Bowmanville (1882-85), Medford (1885-87), and St. Paul’s, Brampton (1887-88). Since 1888 he has been prominent as a lecturer on work among the American Indians, and in this cause has made repeated tours of the world. He has written about a dozen books.

Rest in Peace - Stephen Hawking.
He was given an honorary doctorate when I finished at Notre Dame. The audience was struck by his weakness as his nurse lifted his head to allow the stole to be put on his neck.
That was 1982.

Stephen Hawking dies aged 76 - BBC News:

"Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76, his family has said.

The British physicist was known for his work with black holes and relativity, and wrote several popular science books including A Brief History of Time.

"We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today," a family statement said.

At the age of 22 Stephen Hawking was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease."

New seminary president's gay-conversion past catches school by surprise - Philly: "...she has never denied her affiliation with OneByOne, and had disclosed it to a seminary board member before the vote. He also said she has in recent years actively promoted inclusion for LGBTQIA+ people in the church.

Latini’s former leadership of OneByOne is not the only source of anger for many in the seminary community. They’ve also made clear their displeasure with the administration’s handling of the presidential selection process in 2017 and the secrecy shrouding it. Students, faculty and alumni first heard rumors of Latini’s past earlier this year, and the story circulated without an official statement from the school until last month."

Skeptical Baby asks the tough questions.

Board chair quits at Lutheran seminary amid controversy over new president:

"The statement added, "Dr. Latini explained that she was not a reparative therapist. She did not lead ex-gay support groups or counsel teenagers to stop being gay or lesbian. She acknowledged that she presented basic ideas of a reparative therapist, Elizabeth Moberly, and believed this path was a valid option for those LGBTQ+ persons who wanted to live in chastity in singleness or fidelity in marriage between a man and woman, the Presbyterian standard at that time. She stated, 'I completely reject reparative therapy, and renounce it.'"

Despite these statements, the controversy is not only not dying down but is spreading to involve other divinity schools.

A joint letter from the Lutheran Students of Harvard Divinity School and the Union Theological Seminary noted that many Lutheran students at those two institutions finish their pre-ordination studies at United Lutheran (and previously did so at one of the two seminaries that merged). The letter said that this tradition has been "jeopardized by the past statements of President Latini and the recent, deceptive actions of the ULS board."

Latini's past support for trying to make gay people stop being gay needs to be taken seriously, the letter said. "So-called 'conversion therapy' is theologically and morally bankrupt, incredibly dangerous, and antithetical to the message of Jesus Christ," the letter added."

Therea Latini taught at ELCA's Luther Seminary, which made her an ideal Presbyterian candidate for the United Lutheran Seminary job. The board seemed to tick off the talking points without aligning their far Left agenda with her moderate Left agenda.

We have been mining gems from the Sermons of Martin Luther, Lenker edition, volumes 1-8.

I just finished the draft of volume 8, so I decided to put all the gems together to see where we were for capstone volume - Gems Mined from the Sermons of Luther.

The final version will have illustrations from Norma A. Boeckler and page references as well.

Virginia Roberts has not only done heroic work in editing buthas also picked out gems from each volume.

I think these will be worthwhile for sermons during Lent and Easter, so I am linking the initial PDF for everyone to download, save, and use. I have plans for making more available in the future.

Here is the link to Gems Mined from the Sermons of Martin Luther.

I AM the Resurrection

John 11:20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

This raising of Lazarus is the turning point in the mission of Jesus. Once this has happened, Jesus has completed His work. In other words, everything afterwards is inevitable. By raising Lazarus from the dead, in front of a crowd of local and Jerusalem people, Jesus confirmed His reputation as the Christ the Son of God. The rest of the Gospel concerns His death and resurrection.

There are several important details about this miracle. Jesus delayed coming, and this meant Lazarus was dead for days, as witnessed by his friends and famil

Another detail was the disciples' fear of consequences if they came near Jerusalem. Doubting Thomas expected to die because of the hostility of the religious leaders.

The fame of Jesus had gone forth across the land, so there was both the anticipation of His coming to see His friend, but also the crushing disappoint of Lazarus' death.

This disappointment brought out the clear confession of faith in Jesus -

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

When Jesus countered by saying "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"

Jesus tested her faith. Was it simply faith in eternal life (which we see all over today) or faith in Him as The Resurrection and The Life?

She said, "Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world."

This is a dominant theme in John's Gospel. First of all, He teaches the necessity of faith in Him as the righteousness of God. Secondly, He elicits a confession of faith in Him as the Savior. Both parts are important - His true nature and our confession of faith in Him, His divine mission and titles of majesty.

This is revealed to us through the Holy Spirit in the Word. I was recalling today about being kidded by a Methodist minister at a meeting. He mentioned our churches being close together. I said, "That important because Wesley has his experience of the warming of his heart after hearing Luther's preface to Romans read in church."

That was a turning point in Wesley's life because he read a clear confession of faith in Jesus through Luther's words. Even then there was great confusion from so many false teachers, but the clear truth struck Wesley. When there are so many confused voices, faith is not clearly taught. He knew he lacked a firm conviction of the truth, and this experience taught him that the Gospel Word has an effect (faith) and affect (he felt it within).

How strange that there are so many efforts to take us away from the very source of faith - the Gospel Word - and entertain us, inspire us, recruit us, or make us feel so guilty we do something really significant, like becoming vegan or joining a social justice warrior group.

Confusion and clamor are worse than ever before, so the need for the stability of the Word is even greater. We can see that where some like Gerhard and Luther have struggled with the Word and the issues of the day, they have spiritual treasure to share with us. The greatest concentration is found in the Gospels and Epistles. The Holy Spirit teaches us so much in them that we can resist any false doctrine and all the temptations of the Evil One.

If anything, the turmoil will increase as worldly wisdom becomes even more radical and more people are confused. But the Word who fashioned the universe is still within the hearts of believers to guide them to eternal life.
