The Obligation To Know Our Constitution and To Study the News. Hint. TV News Is Entertainment, Not News

$

I do not comment on the news and politics very often because genuine research and writing on those topics is being done. Hardly anyone is dealing with the Chief Article and the Means of Grace.

Every American citizen has an obligation to know the US Constitution and what it means. A reporter asked about the issues and I said, Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution. I also visited the Congressman's office and talked to the staff member.

Link to the text of the US Constitution

I read a  lot of news sources but laugh at the TV puppet shows. They rely on print journalism, so their material is already second-hand and suspect. The amount covered in a TV broadcast is slight and even that is slanted toward the numbers they value. A non-journalist often makes the news happen - The Drudge Report. He reports 10 billion views in the last year. Yes, b-b-b-billion.

Free Republic is the best news discussion website because the Left-wing sources are linked and discussed. Many participants are experts in their fields, unlike Steadfast Lutherans and SpenerQuest.

Conservative Treehouse has detailed analysis about what is happening, and who is connected to whom. He is the Dilbert writer, too. I was struck by his intuition about leadership, during the election.

The American Spectator has been good at times, but is more likely to provoke a W-H-A-T? response because of truly awful essays. The Spectator led on the Arkansas State Troopers and Clinton, years ago.

The American Thinker has quite a few articles every day. I find some gems there from time to time.

Jack Cashill tends to take on neglected topics, showing independence and great research. However, his columns are too short. However, for the rare news analysis, not going with the pack, he is unusual.

ChurchMouse is in Britain; he is one of the few religious bloggers I respect. By the way - if you want American news stories, read the British press. They are not curled up in the laps of politicians. Recently CM linked to a new source that I knew nothing about.  Look up his Brendan Dilley posts for some behind-the-scenes reporting.

Reading extensively is the only way to get a grasp of what is happening in this Age of Apostasy. Is child trafficking really a world-wide crime of the wealthy elite? I know from many sources that it is, from Hillsong and the Australian Cardinal to Jimmy'll Fixit and Haiti. Those who do not know the basics are condemned to spend their lives in cognitive dissonance, not believing the truth because the facts are so shocking.

It is foolish to rely on one source, because there are so many agendas. Suppressing the news is very popular. One reader responded to this one sentence post.

Peter Hitchens - News is what somebody, somewhere, wants suppressed.

Our job as American voters is to find that news.

About the Crunchy Lutheran Mommy Conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy

From Another Reader - with permission:
I read your latest post about the LCMS Pastor who became Eastern Orthodox. I am not sure it is solely because of UOJ. I went to his blog and read a couple of his posts. He is arguing that liturgy and practice do matter. This is going to continue happening. I say the same thing to my husband all the time. The Lutheran Church I grew up in was very strict in matters of liturgy and practice. Now I am being told that it is adiaphora. We can all worship how we are moved. For your church that may be with Keith Getty music, but it doesn’t matter. We are all one. To which I ask, “Are you really sure about that?”  What am I going to be told is adiaphora next? If we can just change practice depending how I feel, why not just change the whole thing?  I  believe the truth of Sola Scriptura, but worship and practice do matter. They are a mirror of our doctrine. They are a reflection of who we are. If we are not teaching that, we are failing. I am sure the Pastor who left has more reasons. I am sure the struggle for him was real. I find that the Lutheran Church does not want to address this. They are fine with the fact that they are fractured. How many more people are struggling inside?

GJ - The synods are happy to grab the tuition money, so they keep their eyes half-shut when a paying customer is in the seminary. Having someone leave afterwards is not so bad, because it opens up a slot. If anyone thinks the synod leaders care about the individual congregations...think again. I asked a prominent Concordia St. Louis professor about the "shortage" situation. He said, "I don't know and I don't care."

The adiaphora excuse only shows the apostates have not opened the Book of Concord for any reason. Or they simply despise the Confessions.

10] We believe, teach, and confess also that at the time of confession [when a confession of the heavenly truth is required], when the enemies of God's Word desire to suppress the pure doctrine of the holy Gospel, the entire congregation of God, yea, every Christian, but especially the ministers of the Word, as the leaders of the congregation of God [as those whom God has appointed to rule His Church], are bound by God's Word to confess freely and openly the [godly] doctrine, and what belongs to the whole of [pure] religion, not only in words, but also in works and with deeds; and that then, in this case, even in such [things truly and of themselves] adiaphora, they must not yield to the adversaries, or permit these [adiaphora] to be forced upon them by their enemies, whether by violence or cunning, to the detriment of the true worship of God and the introduction and sanction of idolatry. 11] For it is written, Gal. 5:1: Stand fast, therefore, in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not again entangled in the yoke of bondage. Also Gal. 2:4f : And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage; to whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour, that the truth of the Gospel might continue with you. 12] [Now it is manifest that in that place Paul speaks concerning circumcision, which at that time had become an adiaphoron (1 Cor. 7:18f.), and which at other occasions was observed by Paul (however, with Christian and spiritual freedom, Acts 16:3). But when the false apostles urged circumcision for establishing their false doctrine, (that the works of the Law were necessary for righteousness and salvation,) and misused it for confirming their error in the minds of men, Paul says that he would not yield even for an hour, in order that the truth of the Gospel might continue unimpaired.]

I do not know where this reader worships, but the adiaphora argument was used constantly to excuse WELS chasing after the Evangelicals and Pentecostals. Visit any Assemblies of God congregation and you will find all the key ingredients of a Mark and Avoid Jeske church:
  1. Praise band.
  2. Stage - no a chancel. A table maybe, no real altar.
  3. No pulpit.
  4. Coaching sessions, no sermon.
  5. Hide the sacraments.
  6. Screens here, there, everywhere.
  7. Selling coffee - supposedly gourmet. Ha.
  8. Parking valet. No, I am not kidding.
  9. Digital giving, such as having an ATM in the narthex.
  10. Clergy attire confused with going to a picnic.
Notice that the favorite motto of the Jeske circle - A Changeless Christ in a Changing World - is also employed by the apostate American Lutheran Publicity Bureau. It is the name of their history book about how they bravely abandoned Lutheran doctrine. So, is that a liberal thing? Yes, the motto is a liberal thing.

The other argument used by WELS is - "Perhaps we should not exercise our liberty, because that might harm those of you with a weak faith." A smirk would follow. There is no use citing the red section of Article X above, because that has as much meaning to them as Egyptian Book of the Dead in its original language.

Besides all that, Eastern Orthodoxy is long on ceremony, short on doctrinal clarity. The poor abused students of Concordia, Ft. Wayne graduate with two great loves - Eastern Orthodoxy and UOJ. UOJ paves the path to Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Church Growthism, and ultimately atheism. I know two WELS pastors who espoused Church Growth and UOJ only to become atheists - loud and proud - as their confused thoughts led them away from the Word.

The WELS-LCMS-ELS leaders, yea even the CLC (sic) have facilitated this loss of doctrine for the last 40 years plus.

The only WELS excommunication of a pastor for doctrinal reasons was DP Buchholz, SP Schroeder, and their DP allies extending the Left Foot of Fellowship to someone who defended Justification by Faith, the Chief Article of Christianity. How dare he?

 And your little dog too!

From Yet Another Layman - 29A:
Reading Ichabod.  I remember the big to do back in the 1980s about adiaphora. Even CFW made a quote about adiaphora in a state of confession. They forgot that about their hero.

Reminds me of that Theodore Schmauk   I read on ichabod. I summarize. It will not stop until they cross the borders of Scripture itself. Maybe they already have with NIV2011.

Rev. Williams: "Depending on what you mean by "not been a Lutheran for a very long time..."

By very long time, I mean approximately ten years, which includes time at Concordia-St. Paul (where he met Dalas), four years at CTS and four years as a Lutheran pastor.

As Dalas Mueller stated in her August 23, 2017, Crunchy Lutheran Mommy blog, "Good-Bye Blog":

quote:
Throughout our formal education on the Lutheran confessions and practice we learned things about Lutheranism that raised questions. We’ve tried for many years to answer those questions and settle our doubts. But the questions were not resolved, instead more questions appeared and our discomfort with the LCMS’ doctrine and practice grew.

In comparison, in her September 21, 2010, Crunchy Lutheran Mommy blog, "Lutheran," Dalas stated:

quote:
It is true that I was born and raised in the Lutheran Church. I was baptized as an infant and confirmed into the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in middle school. I attended two Lutheran universities and I am now married to a man studying to be a Lutheran pastor. However, I am not Lutheran just because I was taught that way and it’s all I’ve ever known. I have surely had my doubts, and I do not remain without questions concerning the practice of my beloved church....

However, it has been through those doubts, and the mounds of studying and research I have gone through as a result, that leads me to the conclusion that the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and those she is in fellowship with, remain steadfast in purity of doctrine, focusing on the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am indescribably blessed to have the opportunity to fellowship with the Lutheran Church.

Furthermore, I believe that the Lutheran confessions, as written in the Book of Concord, are an accurate interpretation of the Scriptures. I am quite passionate about my Lutheran heritage and theology. As I raise my children in the faith I hope that I will be able to equip them with sound doctrine and Christ-centered teaching that they can take with them throughout their life.

One wonders if CTS (or CSL) took a survey of seminarians over the past decade, how many would honestly express that they favor paedocommunion and that they prefer Loehe over Walther and that Kirche und Amt is not really the definitive statement under Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions of the Synod’s understanding on the subject of church and ministry.

Rick, Never underestimate the ability of a few at our seminaries to stay quiet during class discussions, sit at the back of the room and rarely (if ever) engage in conversation with fellow students - especially if married and living off campus. It does happen. Not often, thankfully, but it does happen. They are stealth heretics.

Uh-oh. I was quiet during class discussions, sat in the back of the room, and did not engage in many conversations with other students while at the seminary. Am I in danger of going full-tilt heretical??? Help me, I'm scared! :-)

Now that I think about it, I was told by a professor while a student that "at least it (my vicarage year and supervisor) was orthodox". Will I turn out like this Mueller fellow? Am I destined to also become Orthodox? In fact, the professor who made that comment to me was named Mueller! I feel like Lonn Chaney, Jr. in those old werewolf movies. If I do turn, please, please, somebody shoot me with the silver bullet. Or, at least, bullet points from Pieper.

Is this Lutheran doctrine? Luther's? The Book of Concord?
No, this is cowardly, sniveling Universalism,
embedded in Valleskey's love-sick hymn to Church Growth.

The parasitic growth, self-styled as LutherQuest, is moaning over the loss of Pastor Crunchy Lutheran Mommy to Eastern Orthodoxy.

(The good news? - the blog name will soon be available.)

One of their Ft. Wayne brethren told me Eastern Orthodoxy was just another polity, i.e., no different in doctrine, just another way of organizing their congregations.

Jay Webber left Ft. Wayne in awe of Eastern Orthodoxy and could not wait to get to the Ukraine to enjoy the ambience of oxcarts, thatched roofs, and incense.

The collective wails on LQ remind me of the hippies crying about the cut trees.

This campaign never got off the ground.

No one on LutherQuest is Lutheran. They should know by now that two of Walther's picks as professors left St. Louis for Roman Catholicism. One was Edward Preuss, the other is less known. Walther claimed it proved how pure his synod was. See Fuerbringer for more information. He was Walther's nephew.

A Lutheran knows the Chief Article is Justification by Faith Alone, and the Concordia-Mequon-Bethany seminaries teach against that doctrine with a passion only matched by the CLC (sic) at their Donkey Basketball games.

How can someone long for F. Pieper when it is Pieper's legacy to turn out ELCA, EO, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal, and Church Growth pastors?

Pieper is the cause, not the cure.

I am not going to claim that all five seminaries teach Walther-Pieper. For many of them, the SynCon canon - aka The Brief Statement of 1932 - is just an excuse to weave fancy tales in the style of modern theology and Biblical studies. Those who could not make a dent in creative writing class found a safe harbor in modern Lutheran theology, where everyone knows, anything goes.

The candidates for jobs at the Failing Five seminaries are selected for their loyalty to the agenda. How else to explain their silence about Pentecostalism, occultism, Church Growth/Missional, women's ordination, and ELCA coveting? These must be the watchers on the Towers of Zion.

The UOJ Stormtroopers never quite catch onto any Justification by Faith passage and consider all Atonement passages a Halleluia Chorus for their dogma.

I organize and copy their best work, quoting them verbatim, after taking my Tums, and they do not reciprocate. They do not quote me, Luther, or Paul and say, "We hate and despise Justification by Faith Alone."

Man up, ye Deans of Dogma. We want to hear your antitheses.

GJ - This article does not remain in WELS-LCMS-ELS-CLC (sic) -ELCA. These sects agree against the Chief Article. That is why they work together so well - they have a common enemy, the Truth.

That does not mean that all the LCMS-WELS-ELS pastors belong in this camp. My impression is that Missouri has the largest group and largest percentage of pastors who teach the Chief Article. Others are scattered about in WELS/ELS.

The professors in the Failing Five teach against the Scriptures, Luther, and the Book of Concord.

GJ - Readers will use their time wisely in following ChurchMouse, linked at the top of the left-hand column. The favorite blogs list will stay right below the views statistics. The newest post is always on top, so a friendly competition ensues to stay on top.

I also admire the work of Dr. Lito Cruz and Alec Satin, with Alec earning two links, a rare distinction.

ChurchMouse corrected me about Dilbert and Conservative Tree House. Dilbert's author has a political column but it is not CTH. The trouble with so much reading on so many topics is merging things together. I try to be excruciatingly precise in theology, so something has to slip at times.

Without overt nudging, CM has encouraged me to report more on the political situation in America. I plan to do that, more to encourage research by the readers, definitely not to serve as the Oracle of Delphi or the interpreter of Q.

ChurchMouse asked specifically about Norma A. Boeckler, which is another indication of her international appeal and influence.

Enrollment Data, Public Opinion Suggest The College Bubble Is Popping:

"Enrollment Data, Public Opinion Suggest The College Bubble Is Popping
A lethal combination of radical liberalism, a rapidly evolving economy, and unstoppable technological progress is all but certain to fell America’s ivory tower.

By Greg Jones
FEBRUARY 28, 2018
All good things, goes the old cliché, must come to an end. And for American higher education, the end is nigh. It will be a particularly sad finale as, before their descent into madness, America’s college campuses were a premier source of national pride.

Even today, people from all corners of the globe dream of sending their children to one of the many leading education centers within America’s borders. Despite comprising less than 5 percent of the world’s population, the United States boasts more than half of the globe’s top 100 universities.

These institutions have advanced research critical to some of the biggest scientific accomplishments in modern history, from a fundamental understanding of chemical reactions to the Internet. But now a lethal combination of radical liberalism, a rapidly evolving economy, and unstoppable technological progress is all but certain to fell America’s ivory tower.

Groupthink Has Strangled the Academy’s Mind
Already the areas of scholarship that once defined a broad, well-versed college education, the liberal arts and humanities, are being passed over for more practical and profitable majors. These long-left-leaning departments have left in their wakes a legacy of groupthink that infects nearly every nook and cranny of academia. Liberal faculty at American colleges and universities outnumber their conservative counterparts nearly 12 to one."

John 8 -

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

 Norma A. Boeckler

I AM the Light of the World
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I AM the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

As I have said before, and recognize more than ever, the Gospel of John is based upon the Torah and fulfills what is promised and foreshadowed in the Five Books of Moses.

We are used to "I am" being used for simple identification, such as "I am an Army veteran" or "I am a teacher." The difference here is that God's Name in Exodus 3 is I AM, and Jesus pointedly used His Name to refute those Jewish leaders who called themselves children of Abraham and ridiculed what He said about the Temple.

The ridicule is edifying, because that is the style all unbelievers use when "refuting" the Faith. They imagine they are clever and funny, but their words betray them, as Jesus revealed to them.

So I consider John 8:58 to be pivotal for the entire Gospel and for what is called Christology. Jesus identified Himself as pre-existent (existing in eternity, before His incarnation). Before Abraham was, I AM.

Nor is Abraham's name a coincidence, because Abraham is the key figure for Justification by Faith in Romans 4, Galatians, James, and Hebrew 11.

Look at the Samaritan woman, in John 4. The Samaritans also had their version of the Five Books of Moses. She confessed faith in the Messiah, the Christ. Jesus said, "I AM, solemnly addressing you now."

Would she have simply heard that as identification, I am He speaking to you now? Or would it be a thunderbolt from heaven to quote Himself from the Burning Bush? I AM! solemnly declaring this truth to you.

Given this basis, we can see what Jesus is teaching - "I AM the Light of the World." That means all truth comes through Christ and is seen in Christ. That is not what the worldly-wise think. They are glad to give Christ a place in their system, more as a philosopher, a man. But they reserve the right to judge Christ and the Christian Faith. They subordinate the Light of the World to their revered inner light.

This is always getting in the way of trust in Christ, because we have to set aside human reason and say, "This is the Truth, and this Truth, the Creating Word, judges all books, all wisdom."

The Gospel of John does this most effectively from the perspective of rhetoric. It is easy to read in any language, including Greek and Latin. Points are clarified and enlarged by repetition. The grammar is easy with no effect to dazzle us with the tools of eloquent. Nevertheless, the Fourth Gospel is the most eloquent and elegant (poetical) of them all.

A true confession of faith in Him does not come from bounty and blessings but waiting, sometimes in a slow agony like the Canaanite woman, and saying -

And should my heart for sorrow break,
My trust in Thee no one could shake.
Thou art the Portion I have sought;
Thy precious blood my soul has bought.

That is from a great hymn that draws together the basics of the Gospel message - Lord, Thee I Love.

Worldly wisdom teaches that following Christ means satisfying our material and social needs. But "I AM the Light" means subordinating our reason to faith in Him. In faith we see that God did not spare the Apostles or His beloved Son. In that time of testing we all face during our lifetimes, we see how that test is completed - and the angels minister to us, too.

Blindness and Light - The Fourth Gospel Survives the Biblical "Scholars"

$
0
0

I began Greek by mistake. Freshmen at Augustana College were not allowed to take the Greek class, lest it strain their mental capacities so early in the program. But I signed up and began taking the class from an Augustana Synod pastor, Harry Johnson, buying the textbook we use for Bethany's Greek classes - Paine.

That put me on an early course of facing false and dubious claims about the Scriptures and seeing the claims refuted. No one said, "Read Lenski," perhaps because the LCA and WELS agreed about Lenski (against) and UOJ (for!) even then.

 Paine

False claims about the Gospel of John:

  1. The Gospel was written very late, 300 AD or later, because of obvious influences from Hellenistic philosophy;
  2. It is not very reliable;
  3. John does not agree with Matthew-Mark-Luke;
  4. We have to rely on the Gospel of Mark for the rawest version of the life of Jesus;
  5. John does not teach the Virgin Birth;
  6. Tischendorf was a great scholar because he discovered Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, the earliest New Testament manuscripts.

Very Late?

  • The earliest scrap of NT manuscript is in the Rylands Library, dated at around 100 AD, making it impossible to date John several centuries later.
  • The style of Jesus' sermons is Hebraic, as if thinking in Hebrew while writing in Greek.
  • The poetic style of Jesus' sermons makes them appear genuine, because that is the OT style and is easily remembered. In addition. some have translated the Greek into Aramaic.
  • The geography of John is accurate, difficult to manage at a distance. If someone asks about the Round House in Watertown, he has been there.

Not Reliable?
This claim comes from the evolutionary philosophy of the 19th century. An early Gospel would not emphasize the divinity of Christ, "because we know Jesus did not consider Himself to be the Messiah or the Son of God. That was placed on the lips of Jesus."
Call it special pleading, circular reasoning, or begging the question - the assumption is self-serving and necessarily leads to false claims. Therefore, the Fourth Gospel is widely ignored - like Lenski and Luther.

John Does Not Agree with the Synoptics
Here we have a built-in contradiction among the modern scholars. The Synoptics (Matthew-Mark-Luke) agree all the time, but the multiple witnesses to the Virgin Birth and Resurrection are not taken seriously.
John clearly supplements what we already know from the Synoptics, without teaching against them. They have more prose narrative while the Fourth Gospel has more poetic sermons.

We Have To Rely on the Gospel of Mark

  1. Like the pyramids, we have to wonder which came first - the famous three pyramids, perfect beyond belief, or the crumbling badly designed ones. Could those "early pyramids" actually be an attempt to make Egypt great again?
  2. Likewise, Mark could easily be a harmony of Matthew and Luke, not the "historical outline" of Matthew and Luke. Almost every word of Mark is found either in Matthew or Luke or both Gospels.
  3. Mark's action-packed with " straightway: or "immediately" Gospel has plenty of miracles per chapter and relatively few sermons. Given a little more editorial removal, an apostate can peel away the real content to find The Historic Jesus. In other words, they create what they want to find.
John Does Not Teach the Virgin Birth
  • Nor does Paul, except in the opening of his most doctrinal letter, Romans, where he also teaches UOJ rather than Justification by Faith. Yuk. Yuk. Romans 1 teaches the Two Natures, just as Exodus 3 does.
  • John 1 transcends the Virgin Birth (assumed knowledge) and teaches the pre-existence of the Son and the Son's role as the Creating Word of Genesis 1.
  • With Paul and John, what the scholar does not see is the same as what he does not believe to be true. Almost all Biblical scholars are 100% rationalists, blind guides who cannot comprehend what is before them.
Tischendorf Was a Great Scholar - But Do Not Take Him Camping
  1. Tischendorf made his reputation by claiming that the monks were warming the library by burning the leather NT manuscripts he rescued. OK, folks. When you need a brisk warming fire out in the woods, set fire to some old leather boots. Feel the glow? No? Tischendorf was a liar and his fans were fools to believe him.
  2. Once again, rationalists trust only those documents that seem to agree with their perspective. Sinaiticus and Vaticanus are outside the main tradition of manuscripts, so they must be the best.
  3. Try this explanation - the manuscripts are for Christian worship so they would preserve the best ones and use them. Don't we still preserve and use The Lutheran Hymnal

A short devotion for the day: A Hopeful Spirit

Read: Acts 5:12-16
Acts 5:15 “They brought forth the sick into the streets, that at the least, the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.”
We do not know where Peter was going. He might have been going to a meeting. It may be that he was on his way to make the chief address at some sort of celebration. But it is certain that, without knowing it at the time, he was doing a lot more good passing along the street than he did with his fine oration. His shadow as it fell upon the sick brought them healing and release.
This is a parable of unconscious influence, of the shadow that is cast by every life as it passes by. No man liveth unto himself. Our worth to one another is determined not only by what we do, but also by what we are. “What you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say.”
This is a great encouragement to many of God’s people, who are no good at making pretty speeches or at taking part in public meetings. They can go on living in the faith, being loyal to their high convictions, being brave in times of suffering, and sticking to their posts of duty. That’s eloquence at its best! For others, seeing them, pick up courage. And their shadow turns to substance – the substance of spiritual health and hope.
Heavenly Father, give us courage for this day and a hopeful spirit as we face tomorrow. May we cause no one to falter by what they see in us. And keep us faithful to the end; through Christ. Amen.

About John Henry Harms

John Henry Harms graduated from Newberry College in 1893 and from the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1897. His first call was to Trinity Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, serving there until 1900. In the summer of 1908, he was notified by telegram of his election to the presidency of Newberry College. He accepted the call and served until 1918. During this period, in 1912, he received his D. D. from Erskine College, Due West, South Carolina.
In 1918, he began his work at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion in Philadelphia. He was to continue in this call for 27 years, resigning in 1945. During this pastorate he also served as the president of the Board of Publications of the United Lutheran Church. And, in 1945, received a Litt. D. from Newberry College. Rev. Harms passed away at his home in Philadelphia after a long illness.1

Dark Cat is not pleased with the positive response
to Justification by Faith.

That is quite remarkable, to have any post collect almost 1000  views, especially when that happens within a week.

I used to look over the list of posts and see what was attracting 200 or more.

This shows how significant broadcasting the Word can be. Someone was worrying about the effect of sharing the truth. I said, "Our job is merely to broadcast, now to worry about the effect of the Word."

That Old Debbul - Human Reason

One person said, "I cannot understand Mark 13, where God knows the day of His coming, but the Son does not."

I responded, "I do not understand the Incarnation. That is the ultimate miracle. The Word teaches the mysteries revealed by the Spirit, so we subordinate reason to the Scriptures."

I was not claiming to understand the Mark 13 reference, only saying that everything else is rather minor compared to God taking on human flesh and dwelling among us.

Mark 13
31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

The Gospel teaches us faith. The Holy Spirit plants faith in our hearts through the Word and nourishes that faith through the Word and Holy Sacraments - which are the visible Word.

Nothing is quite as satisfying as teaching and studying the statements and sermons of Jesus. If we are studious, whether as laity or clergy, then we are necessarily teaching someone, if that outreach is only limited to our own household. But that is unlikely, because so many false and and dangerous notions get brought up daily.

I often think of the victory of remaining a believer during a lifetime of spiritual assaults, diversions, betrayals, and temptations. To remain trusting in Christ - that is good and bound to have collateral effect - collateral damage to Satan and his minions.

Think of this - a baby is baptized into the Faith and nurtured in the Bible as he grows up. Then he reaches seminary where he learns - to his astonishment - that everyone in the world is already forgiven. Pastor Papenfus admitted that he never heard of UOJ until he reached seminary. Four years at Northwestern College and no UOJ? But he argued for this pernicious and infectious dogma at Kokomo.

Now this Halle University dogma is so embedded in clergy that they loathe Luther and the Book of Concord, honor the teaching of a syphilitic bishop - Walther's mentor - and wonder where all the members went.

Yes, I skipped the Volume VI cover on top of the page because we  Volume VII is done already, and VIII is being edited. That has been the normal state since this began. My brain keeps saying, "Out of memory, not enough for this function, reboot now."

To finish VIII and the Gems faster, I will send out expected volumes when they are also done. Exceptions are those who earned a dedication for a given volume.

From abandoning the Chief Article

Observe that these volumes are non-synodical, non-political. They are being published simply to highlight and support the primary office of the clergy - preaching.

From Luther's preaching came his insightful Bible studies, his faithful hymns, and the confessional material found in the Book of Concord.

Fun with Justice Alito During SCOTUS Oral Arguments:

"How often does laughter repeatedly rock the Supreme Court during oral arguments? How often are oral arguments at the Supreme Court this hilarious?

Defending a state law allowing censorship based on political content before the justices of the Supreme Court is not a job I would volunteer for (even if I were qualified for it, which I am not). So, Attorney Donald Rogan, representing Minnesota in the case Minnesota Voters Alliance v. Mansky, 16-1435.a may have had a thankless task. Nonetheless, Justice Alito had a bit of fun leading him through questioning of what kinds of political content would or would not be allowed in various hypothetical situations.

The law in question allowed local election officials to bar people wearing clothing with political messages from polling places.  (transcript)"

Contents (39 pages)

  • About the Author
  • Copyright Information
  • Preface.
  • Do children have a right under the Gospel to Church-membership by Baptism?
    • 1 The Church-membership of children was directly instituted and positively commanded by the Lord himself as far back as the time of Abraham, in a covenant made with him, called expressly the Gospel, or covenant of grace, which Church-membership was not only not revoked by Jesus Christ, but was confirmed and established by him.
    • 2 Children are included in the promise connected with that covenant.
    • 3 Children are included in Christ’s invitation, and declared to he fit subjects for the New Testament Church or kingdom.
    • 4 Children are included in Christ’s original command commissioning and authorizing his ministers to administer the Sacrament of Baptism.
    • 5 Children are the lambs of Christ’s flock, as their parents are the sheep of his fold, and, therefore, their relation both to the Shepherd and to the flock forbids that they should be excluded from the fold.
    • 6 Children were included in the host of the Israelites as they were baptized unto Moses in their passage through the Red Sea, and which is declared to he an example or type of Christian Baptism.
    • 7 Children were included in the numerous family or household Baptisms that are recorded in the Scriptures.
    • 8 Children are included in the uniform practice of the universal Christian Church from the time of the apostles to the present time in the administration of Baptism.
  • Conclusions
    • 1 All persons who were baptized in their infancy may he satisfied with their Baptism.
    • 2 It is the duty of all parents to present their children for holy Baptism.
  • Upon the Consciences of Parents
    • 1 Christ’s command includes children. (Matt. 28:19)
    • 2 Baptism initiates into Christ’s Church. (John 3: 5)
    • 3 Baptism is in the place of circumcision. (Col. 2:11-13)
    • 4 Baptism is a means of regeneration.
    • 5 Baptism, like circumcision, brings the soul into covenant relation with God. (Gen. 17: 10)
    • 6 Infant Baptism must be practiced, because the promise is to the children. (Acts 2:38-39)
    • 7 Baptism is really a saving ordinance; not, of course, as a mere opus operatum, a mere manipulation of the hands. But in God’s economy it is a sacrament of saving efficacy, so says 1 Peter 3:21

About the Author – Emanuel Greenwald

Rev. Greenwald was born near Frederick, Maryland, Jan. 13, 1811, and was, like the prophet Samuel of old, dedicated by his pious parents to the holy office from his earliest infancy. His theological studies were pursued under the private supervision of Rev. David F. Schaeffer, who similarly prepared no less than fourteen other young men, in his own parsonage, for the work of the ministry.
Dr. Greenwald’s first parish was New Philadelphia, Ohio, and all the adjoining country within a radius of fifteen miles in every direction. At one time he supplied fourteen preaching points on Sundays and week-days. In 1842 he was elected as the first editor of the Lutheran Standard, and from 1848 to 1850 he was the president of the English District Synod of Ohio.
The years 1851 to 1854 were spent in the city of Columbus, during which time he held many responsible positions on important boards, committees, etc. In September, 1854, he accepted a call to the pastorate of Christ Church, Easton, Penn., which he faithfully served for twelve years. His fourth and last parish was Holy Trinity Church of Lancaster, Penn., in which he labored from May, 1867, up to his death in December, 1885. He began preaching every Thursday evening at a mission point in the northern part of the city, which soon developed into Grace Church, and afterwards started another mission in the western section which was the nucleus of Christ Church. An assistant being necessary for the increasing field, Rev. Charles S. Albert served in this capacity, then Rev. David H. Geissinger, then Rev. John \V. Rumple, then Rev. C. Elvin Haupt, then Rev. Ezra K. Reed, then Rev. Charles L. Fry. Long after his own generation will his memory continue to be revered as an ideal pastor and a man of pre-eminent saintliness. C. L. F.1

"Woods; Oren Paris III, president of Ecclesia College in Springdale; and consultant Randell G. Shelton Jr., formerly of Alma, are accused in a federal indictment of participating in a kickback scheme involving state grants. The Justice Department alleges Paris paid Woods and then-state Rep. Micah Neal, R-Springdale, kickbacks in return for $550,000 in grants from them to his Ecclesia College from 2013 through 2014."

Judge rules ex-state senator's corruption case can proceed, says FBI investigator may face criminal charges:

"FAYETTEVILLE — A U.S. district judge denied defense motions to dismiss the corruption case involving a former Arkansas legislator, revealing in his court order that the chief FBI investigator in the case is under investigation and may face criminal charges.

Special agent Robert Cessario had the hard drive of the computer used in investigating former state Sen. Jon Woods, R-Springdale, wiped after being ordered to turn it over for investigation.

Judge Timothy Brooks noted in Friday's ruling that Cessario's actions were being investigated by the FBI's Office of the Inspector General and he could be criminally charged."

OCULI. THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

TEXT: Luke 11:14-23. And he was casting out a demon that was dumb. And it came to pass, when the demon was gone out, the dumb man spake; and the multitudes marveled. But some of them said, By Beelzebub the prince of the demons casteth he out demons. And others trying him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you. When the strong man fully armed guardeth his own court, his goods are in peace: but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him his whole armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

I. CHRIST’S DEFENSE AGAINST HIS BLASPHEMERS.

1. This is a beautiful Gospel from which we learn many different things, and in which nearly everything is set forth as to what Christ, his kingdom and his Gospel are: what they accomplish and how they fare in the world.

In the first place, like all the Gospels this one teaches us faith and love; for it presents Christ to us as a most loving Savior and Helper in every need and tells us that he who believes this is saved. For we see here that Christ had nothing to do with people who were healthy, but with a poor man who was greatly afflicted with many ills. He was blind, as Matthew says; also dumb and possessed with a demon, as Luke tells us here. Now all mutes are also deaf, so that in the Greek language deaf and dumb are one word.

By this act Christ draws us to himself, leads us to look to him for every blessing, and to go to him in every time of need. He does this that we also, according to the nature of love, should do unto others as he does unto us.

This is the universal and the most precious doctrine of this Gospel and of all the Gospels throughout the church year. This poor man, however, did not come to Christ without the Word; for those who brought him to Christ must have heard his love preached and were moved thereby to trust in him.

We learn therefore that faith comes through the Word; but more of this elsewhere.

2. Secondly, it is here demonstrated how Christ and his Gospel fare in the world, namely, that there are three kinds of hearers. Some marvel at him; these are pious and true Christians, who consider this deed so great that they are amazed at it. Some blaspheme the Gospel; these are the Pharisees and scribes, who were vexed because they could not do the like, and were worried lest the people should hold Christ in higher esteem than themselves. Some tempt him, like Herod desired a sign after his own heart, that they may make sport of it. But he answers both parties; at first, the blasphemers in this Gospel, and later on the tempters, saying that no sign shall be given this wicked generation except the sign of the prophet Jonah, of which we read in the verses following. He answers the blasphemers in a friendly way and argues five points with them.

3. In the first place, with honest and reasonable arguments he concludes from two comparisons that one devil cannot cast out another; for if that were so, the devils would be divided among themselves and Satan’s kingdom would indeed not stand. For nature teaches that if a kingdom is divided against itself and its citizens drive out each other, it is not necessary to go to war against it, for it will come to ruin soon enough of itself. Likewise a house divided against itself needs no other destruction.

Even the heathen author Sallust, teaching only from the light of nature and experience, says: “Great wealth passes away through discord, but through concord small means become large.” If now the devils were divided among themselves to such a degree that one should drive out the other, Satan’s dominion would be at an end, and we would have rest from his attacks.

4. What then were these blasphemers able to say to such clear arguments?

They were put to silence, but their hearts were hardened, so that they did not heed his words. A hardened heart will not be instructed, no matter how plainly and clearly the truth is presented; but the faith of the righteous is strengthened when they see that the ground of their faith is right and good.

And for the sake of such we must answer those whose hearts are hardened, and put them to silence. Even though they will not be converted nor keep silence still it serves to reveal their hardened hearts, for the longer they talk the more foolish they become, and they are caught in their folly, and their cause is robbed of the appearance of being right and good, as Solomon also says in Proverbs 26:5: “Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.” That is, answer him according to his folly that his folly may be put to shame for the sake of others, that they may not follow him and be deceived, thinking that he is right. Otherwise, where no such condition exists, it is better to keep silent, as Solomon also says in the same chapter, verse 4 “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.”

5. Nor could they say here that the devils only pretended to be divided among themselves and to yield to one another in order to deceive the people, for it is publicly seen how they resist and contend, cry and rave, tear and rage, when they see that Christ means to expel them. It is then clearly seen that they are opposed to Christ and his Spirit, and they are not united with him, to whom they must yield so unwillingly. Therefore it is only a flagrant blasphemous lie, in which they are caught and put to shame, by which they try in venomous hate to give the devil credit for a work of God. From this we learn not to be surprised when our doctrine and life are blasphemed and stubborn hearts will not be convinced nor converted, although they are overwhelmed, as it were, with tangible truth and completely put to silence. It is enough that through our arguments their obstinate folly is revealed, acknowledged and made harmless to pious people, so that the latter may not be misled by its fine pretension. They may then go whither they will, they have condemned themselves as St. Paul says, Titus 3:11.

6. In the second place, he replies with a public example and a similar work, when he says: “By whom do your sons cast them out?” As if he would say: “Is this not simple idiocy? Just what you praise in your sons, you condemn in me. Because your sons do it, it is of God; but because I do it, it must be of the devil.” So it is in this world. What Christ does, is of the devil; if some one else did it, it would be all right. Thus the tyrants and enemies of the Gospel do now, when they condemn in us what they themselves do, confess and teach; but they must proceed thus in order that their judgment may be publicly approved, when they are condemned by all justice. The sons, of whom Christ here says that they drive out devils, were, I think, certain exorcists among the people, for God, from the beginning, had given this people manifold spiritual gifts and he calls them their “sons,” as though to say: I am the Son of God and must be called a child of the devil, while those who are your sons, begotten by you, do the same things and are not to be considered children of the devil.

7. “Therefore shall they be your judges,” that is, I appeal to them. They will be forced to decide that you wrongfully blaspheme me, and thus condemn yourselves. For if one devil does not drive out another then some other power must do it that is neither satanic nor human, but divine. Hence the words: “But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.” This finger of God is called in Matthew 12:28 the Holy Ghost, for the words read thus: “But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons,” etc. In short, Christ means to say: If the kingdom of God is to come unto you, the devil must be driven out, for his kingdom is against God’s kingdom, as you yourselves must confess.

But demon is not driven out by demon, much less by men or the power of men, but alone by the Spirit and power of God.

8. From this follows that where the finger of God does not cast out the devil, there the devil’s kingdom still exists; where Satan’s kingdom still exists, there the kingdom of God cannot be. The unavoidable conclusion then is that, as long as the Holy Spirit does not enter our hearts, we are not only incapable of any good, but are of necessity in the kingdom of Satan.

And if we are in his kingdom, then we can do nothing but that which pleases him, else it could not be called his kingdom. As St. Paul says to Timothy: “The people are taken captive in the snares of the devil unto his will” 2 Timothy 2:26. How could Satan suffer one of his people to take a notion to do something against, and not for, his kingdom? Oh, it is a striking, terrible and powerful statement that Christ here admits such a dominion, which we cannot escape except by the power of God; and that the kingdom of God can not come to us until that kingdom is driven out by divine, heavenly power.

9. This truth is proved in the case of this poor man, who was bodily possessed of the devil. Tell me, what could he and all mankind do to free him from the devil? Without a doubt, nothing. He had to do and suffer just as his master the devil willed, until Christ came, with the power of God.

Now then, if he could not free himself from the devil as to his body, how could he, by his own power, deliver his soul from Satan’s spiritual dominion? Especially is this the case since the soul, because possessed of sin, is the cause of all bodily possession as a punishment, and sins are more difficult to remove than the punishment of them, and the soul is always more firmly possessed than the body. This is proved by the fact that the devil permits the body to have its natural powers and functions; but he robs the soul of reason, judgment, sense, understanding, and all its powers, as you readily see in the case of this possessed man.

10. He answers them in the third place, by a comparison taken from life, namely that of a strong man overcome by one stronger, and robbed of all his armor and goods etc. By this he testifies also that no one but God can overcome the devil, so that again no man can boast of being able of himself to drive out either sin or the devil. Notice how he pictures the devil! He calls him a mighty giant who guards his court and home, that is, the devil not only possesses the world as his own domain, but he has garrisoned and fortified it, so that no one can take it from him. He rules it also with undisputed sway, so that it does whatever he commands. Just as little as a house or court may withstand or contend against the tyrant who is its master, can man’s free will and natural powers oppose sin and Satan, that is, not at all; but they are subject to them. And as that house must be conquered by a stronger man and thus wrested from the tyrant, so must man also be ransomed through Christ and wrested from Satan. We see again, therefore, that our works and righteousness contribute absolutely nothing toward our salvation; it is effected alone by the grace of God.

11. He answers them fourthly, with pointed proverbs and teachings, as: “He that is not with me is against me,” and, “He that gathereth not with me, scattereth.” “The devil is not with me for I drive him out, hence he must of necessity be against me.” But this saying does not apply to the devil alone, but also to the blasphemers whom he here convicts and condemns, as being against him since they are not for him. “To be with Christ” is to have the same mind and purpose as Christ, that is, to believe in Christ that his works save us and not our own, for this is what Christ holds and teaches. But “to gather with Christ” is to do good out of love to him, and to become rich in good works. He that does not believe is, by his own free will, not with Christ but against him, because he depends upon his own works. Therefore, he that does not love, does not gather with Christ, but by fruitless works becomes only more sinful and drifts farther and farther from the faith.

12. In the fifth place, he answers with a threat, namely, that the last state always is worse than the first. Therefore we should take heed that we not only refrain from blaspheming the Gospel and Christ, who does such great things for us and drives the devil out of us; but with zeal and fear hold fast to them, in order that we may not become possessed of seven worse devils whereas one possessed us before. For thus it was with the Jews, who had never been so wicked as while the Gospel was being preached to them. So also under the papacy, we have become seven times, (that is, many times) worse heathen under the name of Christ than we ever had been before as St. Peter says: “The last state is become worse with them than the first.” 2 Peter 2:20. And if we neglect the great light which we now have, it will come to pass in our case also, that we shall become worse than we were before, for the devil does not slumber. This should be sufficient warning.

13. Finally, when the woman cries out to Christ and praises him, saying, “Blessed is the mother that bore such a son,” etc., he opposes her carnal worship and takes occasion to teach all of us the substance of this Gospel, namely, that we should not go gaping after the works or merits of the saints but rather see to it that we hear and keep the Word of God. For it does not concern or profit us in the least to know how holy and honorable the mother of this child might be, nor how noble this Son of hers may be; but rather what this Son has done for us, namely that, by grace, without any merit or worthiness on our part, he has redeemed us from the devil.

This fact is proclaimed to us through the Word of God, and this we are to hear and hold in firm faith; then shall we too be blessed like this mother and her child.

Although such a Word and work will be blasphemed, we should suffer it and give an answer with meekness, as St. Peter teaches, for the improvement of others.

II. THE ALLEGORICAL OR SPIRITUAL MEANING OF THIS GOSPEL.

14. This dumb, deaf, blind, and demon-possessed man represents all the children of Adam, who through the flesh are possessed of Satan in original sin, so that they must be his slaves and do according to his will. Hence they are also blind, that is, they do not see God. They are deaf, for they do not hear God’s Word, and are not obedient or submissive to it. They are also dumb, for they do not give him one word of thanks or praise, nor do they preach and proclaim Christ and the grace of God. But they are all too talkative about the teachings of the devil and the opinions of men. In these things they see only too well and are wiser than the children of light in their undertakings, opinions, and desires. In these things they hear with both ears and readily adopt the suggestions of flesh and blood. So then, whatever we do, in word and deed, as to both body and soul, is of the devil, whether it be externally good or bad, and must be redeemed through the work of God. We are in his kingdom and therefore we acknowledge him, see, hear, and follow him and praise and proclaim his name. All this takes place through the Spirit of God in his Word, which casts out the devil and his kingdom.

15. The Jews called the chief of the devils Beelzebub. The Hebrew word “sebub” means a fly; “baal” or “beel,” a man or ruler, as a householder.

When the two words form a combination, they mean an arch-fly or chieffly, or, in plain German “Fliegenkoenig oder grosse Hummel,” that is, kingfly or the great drone. They gave Satan this contemptuous epithet as though they were entirely free from him, secure against him, and lords over him. That is the way all conceited, corrupt hypocrites do; they imagine they are so pure and holy, that the devil is a helpless, feeble fly compared with them, and that they do not need the grace of Christ nor the Word of God.

Still they think he is strong enough for others, yet, that whatever godfearing people teach and do must be the devil’s own work, and they consider it such a trifling thing as though it were a dead fly. The devil can well endure such contempt, for by it he is placed above the true God in their hearts.

16. The tyrant in the court or palace is the devil, as I said before. He is in peace, however, as long as God’s Word and finger do not oppose him, and just like this deaf-mute, his people do whatever he wishes, for they know no better. His weapons and armor are the carnal conceit, doctrines and traditions of men, by which he terrifies the conscience and protects himself.

17. But when the stronger man, the Gospel, comes, peace flees, and he rages like a madman, for he resents being condemned, unmasked, punished, and publicly branded. Then he gathers up his armor, the powerful, wise, rich and holy people, and sets them all to attacking God’s Word, as we see in the persecution of the teachers of the Gospel. Such rage and persecution signify that the devil retires very unwillingly and raves in his whole body; for as he acts in the body and its members when he must depart, so he also behaves in the whole world, resisting with all his power when he is to give place to the Gospel; but it is all in vain, he must be expelled.

18. For a Stronger One, that is, Christ, comes and overpowers him and takes away his whole armor, that is, he converts some of those same persecutors, and to that extent makes him weaker, and his own kingdom stronger. He divides the spoils too, that is, those he converts he uses for various offices, graces, and works in Christendom, of which Paul writes in Romans 12:6. He is also in the court yard or ante-room of the palace, for the devil’s kingdom consists in outward appearances and pretences of wisdom, holiness, and strength; but when it is captured by the Gospel it is found to consist of pure folly, sin and weakness.

19. The text continues, “When the unclean spirit has gone out, he wanders through dry places, seeking rest,” etc. This means as much as the saying, “The devil never takes a vacation” and “The devil never sleeps,” for he is seeking how he may devour man. “Dry places” are not the hearts of the ungodly, for in such he rests and dwells like a mighty tyrant, as the Gospel here says; but there are dry and waste places here and there in the country where no people live, as forests and wildernesses. To these he flees in wicked rage because he is driven out. You will remember that the devil found Christ in the wilderness. Now, in Judea, there is not much water, hence we read that it contains many and wastes. In other countries, however, as in our own, which are well watered, the devils stay in rivers and lakes, and there they sometimes drown those who bathe or sail upon them. Furthermore, at some places there are water spirits, who entice the children from the shores into the water and drown them. These are all devils.

20. That he comes again and finds the house swept and garnished (Matthew adds “empty”) signifies that the man is sanctified and adorned with beautiful spiritual gifts, and that the evil spirit clearly sees that he can do nothing there with his familiar tricks, for he is too well known. Thus when the worship of idols was driven from the heathen, he never attacked the world with that device again. But what did he do then? He tried something else, went out, took with him seven spirits, more evil than himself, and entered in with them and dwelt there, and the last state of that man was worse than the first. So he has dealt with us. When Christ had become known in the world and the devil’s former kingdom with its idol worship had been destroyed, he adopted another plan and attacked us with heresy and introduced and established the papacy, in which Christ was entirely forgotten, and men became worse heathen under the name of Christ than before he was preached, as we can see now with our own eyes.

Such also was the lot of the Jews after the destruction of Jerusalem, and of the Greeks under the Turks. And so all will fare, who at first hear the Word of God and afterwards become secure and weary of it. St. Matthew says, in Matthew 12:14, that Satan finds the house empty. And in Matthew 13:25, he sowed tares among the wheat, by night, while men slept. Therefore it is necessary for us to watch as the apostles always admonish us, especially St. Peter in 1 Peter 5:3: “Brethren, be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour”; for wherever he overthrows faith, he easily restores again all former vices.
