Narrow-Minded Lutheran Finds a Strange Harmony with Grace in Action (WELS) and ELCA

Greetings in our Triune God, Pastor Jackson!
I pray all is well with you and yours.  Please give Sassy a kiss for me.

Please check out ELCA's homepage, then read the quote from WLC President Johnson:
"GIA is passionate about leadership training and support - their coaching model is both impactful and practicable. I really appreciate their focus on supporting initiatives that powerfully share Jesus...or supporting the men and women who are God's hands and feet who take Christ to a hurting world. I am honored to partner with GIA."

"God's work, our hands," on ELCA's home page is very similar to President Johnson's, "...supporting the men and women who are God's hands and feet ..."  Are they going to the same gimmick seminars?

While I am not trying to downgrade helping others and telling the Gospel,  is raising children not pleasing to God?  Is being a husband or wife not pleasing to God?  Is being a good employer or employee not pleasing to God?  Are our earthly vocations in which we have been placed not ways to serve our neighbor?

Also,  note ELCA and LWF sending help to the Palestinians in Gaza.  While I feel sorry for the innocent people on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict,  the key to fixing that problem is for both Jews and Mohammedans to repent and stop rejecting Christ.  We pray in our home every day for the Holy Ghost to bring them to faith in Christ.  However, I wonder if ELCA and LWF going to help the Christians being slaughtered and forced from their homes in Iraq?
Thanks for your work.  Your "little blog" is one of the few bastions of Lutheran orthodoxy.
Regards in Christ,

Narrow-Minded

GJ - I am glad you mentioned that, Narrow. I am almost numb from all the blasphemies erupting from the Jeske coven.

You identified the old "God has no hands but yours," which the Methodists used until they melted like a July frost.

Pietism degenerates into rationalistic do-goodism, as Rick Warren and others have already demonstrated. WELS and Missouri figure they can work with all of ELCA - and you know what I mean - and not be polluted. However, if the archbishop of the Church of the Augsburg Confession showed up at one of their enchantments, they would go bezonkers with rage and fear.

Meanwhile, page-views are way up on the blog nobody reads.

A Travesty Examined, Part Eight

Another presentation at the Experience is It Takes Faith to Build a New Ministry. This presentation will be given by Mark Cares, who, by the way, is an antinomian who recently wrote paper claiming that the law shouldn't be preached to believers.

So, according to Mark Cares, what do you need to start a new ministry? Well, obviously the first thing you need is a divine call, right? You can't just take a new ministry upon yourself, you have to be called by the Holy Spirit to that ministry, right? And then, once you have received a divine call to begin a new ministry, what do you need to build it? This one's a no-brainer, right? You need the gospel in Word and Sacrament, right? Only the Spirit can build a ministry, right?

Nope. Not even close. You don't need a divine call. You don't need the gospel. Here's what you actually need, according to Mark Cares:

  • Having a bold vision that excites people
  • Building a board and staff of bold, passionate, and competent people
  • Instilling a “Go” and “Do” mentality
  • Striving for excellence in all facets of the work
  • Being flexible to the Lord’s leading

It is all about the money, as I will reveal in the newest post.

 Joel Dusek said...
So, evidently it take faith in one's self, organization, and board members. Failure is God's way of teaching you flexibility. That's not ministry, it a self-help group.

Not to mention that the last point is pure enthusiasm. The Lord doesn't do any leading outside of the Word.

Saddened is right. A lot more Gospel work could get done. IF our leaders would "Just say NO!!!" To ALL and EVERY CGM piece of junk that arises, right away. Just stop it immediately! Then we could get back to just preaching and teaching. There, easy fix!

RE: My Worthless Blog

Here's a nice comment:

I'm saddened to see that this blog is much like every other blog that addresses issues in the WELS. It is filled with the same old names of people who spout the same old criticisms. While there is much belly-aching and condemnation of the Wisconsin Synod, there is a woeful lack of actual rhetoric that looks to do something beneficial, to improve the WELS or to fix the problems. If many of you spent half the time actually working for solutions as opposed to just criticizing or calling out everything that is evil in the WELS, perhaps the Synod wouldn't be so bad and more gospel work would be done. Until that happens, blogs like this are pretty worthless.

Before someone can get to work fixing a problem, one must be willing to admit that there is a problem. Most in the WELS aren't willing to admit that there are problems in the WELS. Until that's the case, there's very little that can actually be done to fix things. I'm so sorry that it saddens you to face the fact that there are actual problems in the WELS, but there must be mourning before there is laughing.

This problem is compounded by the fact that not only are most in the WELS unwilling to admit that there are problems, they are even unwilling to tolerate others who dare to claim that there are problems. Telling the truth about the WELS and honestly pointing out problems is grounds for removal from the WELS.

So how can I work to fix the problems when the simple act of identifying problems in need of fixing is grounds for termination?

Blogger Vernon Knepprath said...
"Saddened" fails to recognize that most posts in these blogs and many of the comments offer "something beneficial, to improve the WELS or to fix the problems". It's called the "Means of Grace". I suspect "Saddened" must be lumping the "Means of Grace" into what he says is "just criticizing or calling out everything that is evil in the WELS".

I apologize if I mis-stated the gender of "Saddened", since "Anonymous" is gender neutral.

Very well put, Vernon. With every new examination of this conference, it just becomes plain as the nose on one's face: If you want to be a leader in the church, lead with the Scriptures and the Confessions. Use the Means of Grace. Grow in the Word and let the Holy Spirit continue to do His work in your heart. Start with these tools that you should already have at your disposal.

Why are some so quick to jump on the secular flavor of the month bandwagon when it comes to ministry? Is not God's Word sufficient? Would it have been so terribly difficult to have a leadership conference that is set up with actual pastors, teachers, and missionaries talking about their individual fields? They could talk about their challenges and how with the Lord's help they learned from mistakes and continued to study the Word.

Why not have a Bible study that shows the great leaders in the Old and New Testaments and what made them great leaders of God's people and His Church? Why not go over the historical record in order to see what Luther went through in becoming a leader?

That would have been a conference that wouldn't draw objections. It would have been Bible based with discussion about actual experiences in actual congregations and classrooms and missions. Faith would have been strengthened and fellow believers would be encouraged.

Instead the Word apparently isn't good enough anymore in order to have a successful church and successful church leadership. You need business consultants, metrics, and holistic medicine to be effective in today's McChurches. How disgusting.

while shamelessly aping every crackpot on TV or in prison.

This Photoshop of the Jeske Nebula,
drawing the Dollar Galaxy into its orbit.
was eerily prophetic.
One non-reader sent me a message that Mark Jeske was making $250,000 a year from being on the pan-religious Thrivent Board of Directors - the one that funds Planned Parenthood.

I looked for the Thrivent 990s and found a different figure for 2012.

This line shows him making $139,583 for working 10 hours a week for Thrivent, plus another $31,578.

The extra money is explained in the table -

I was intrigued about the figure used in the email. It could be current. In 2011, Jeske labored 10 hours a week for only 57,333.

His total compensation more than tripled in one year, so another significant increase is not unlikely. However, the Federal 990 forms are only posted up through 2012.

Similarly, the head of Concordia Publishing House head made almost $300,000 and Paul McCain made almost $200,000 in 2012.

Church and Changes
Last week I blogged about the conclusions from some Christian observers that membership and attendance in Christian churches is in serious decline. I offered my own “top five” list of attitudes in congregations that can help growth. The 5th was this:

“You aren’t really ready to welcome new people unless you are willing to let them change your style and congregational culture.”

That comment drew some questions and pushback, and so I would like to expand on what I meant by that.

The message of Scripture is non-negotiable. It is true and timeless, transcending all human history, and will be as relevant on the day before Judgment Day as it was the day after the Fall. But the way in which we deliver those truths, the way in which we organize our congregations, the way in which we set up our congregational worship life, the way in which we design leadership structures—all these are infinitely negotiable. Scriptural doctrine does not change. Cultural patterns can. This does not mean throwing out everything of the past. It does mean preserving the best of the church’s traditional forms but being open to new things, too.

This principle is of special importance to congregations that were founded as ethnic, racial, or linguistic monocultures—all Italians, for instance, or Germans, or Poles. That initial monoculture eventually evaporates, and the congregation needs to flex as it seeks to attract people outside that original founding group. Waiting for more ethnics to move in to replace the first and second generation is a forlorn hope. As a leader in the Armenian Orthodox church here in my town once ruefully remarked in the local paper, “It’s hard to have an ethnic church without any ethnics.”

New people may want to learn from the culture of the congregation, but they will want to contribute their flavor as well. I would like to think that my European-rooted congregation has much to offer people in my city, but I am also grateful to our many African American members for the energy that they have brought, for the evangelism passion, openness, and emotional intensity. My tribe has historically venerated the pipe organ as the chief worship musical instrument, but our congregation has benefitted greatly from gospel music played on piano and Hammond organ and from the guitar sounds of Hispanic cultures. The church of my childhood never had a drum in worship. We do now.

The church also needs to draw flavor from its youth. Younger generations need to contribute to the culture and style—their songs and their poems and their instruments are important to them and should be important to the congregation as well. They love their digital world and the gospel can thrive there too. This does not diminish the message. It only helps bring the one message to more people by letting it ride on a vehicle agreeable to the hearer.
St. Paul articulated a powerful maxim for church leaders of all times in I Corinthians 9: “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.”

Me too, Paul.

This image is available for Webpublication. For questions, contact Sally Morrow.
(RNS) Seattle megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll has been removed from a church-planting network of more than 500 churches he helped found after a pattern of “ungodly and disqualifying behavior.”
Driscoll, co-founder of the Acts 29 Network, has been an influential but edgy pastor within conservative evangelical circles for several years. His own Mars Hill Church attracts some 14,000 people at 15 locations across five states each Sunday.
At the same time, however, Driscoll has been controversial in evangelical circles for years. The New York Times Magazine called him “one of the most admired — and reviled — figures among evangelicals nationwide.” He has been provocative, occasionally profane and has faced allegations of plagiarism and inflating his book sales.
After Acts 29 board action, all of Driscoll’s Mars Hill Church locations have been removed from the website of the network.
“It is our conviction that the nature of the accusations against Mark, most of which have been confirmed by him, make it untenable and unhelpful to keep Mark and Mars Hill in our network,” the Act 29 board wrote in a letter. “In taking this action, our prayer is that it will encourage the leadership of Mars Hill to respond in a distinctive and godly manner so that the name of Christ will not continue to be dishonored.”
In a longer letter obtained by blogger Warren Throckmorton, the Acts 29 board asked Driscoll to “step down from ministry for an extended time and seek help.”
“Over the past three years, our board and network have been the recipients of countless shots and dozens of fires directly linked to you and what we consider ungodly and disqualifying behavior,” the board wrote. “We have both publicly and internally tried to support and give you the benefit of the doubt, even when multiple pastors in our network confirmed this behavior.”
Driscoll, who’s been facing the same heavy criticism in recent years that he was known for dishing out to others, recently admitted to and apologized for comments he made under the pseudonym “William Wallace II” where he posted statements critical of feminism, homosexuality and “sensitive emasculated” men.
The Acts 29 board’s letter suggested that it could not lean on Mars Hill’s own board for discipline.
“In response, we leaned on the Mars Hill Board of Advisors & Accountability to take the lead in dealing with this matter,” the letter states. “But we no longer believe the BoAA is able to execute the plan of reconciliation originally laid out. Ample time has been given for repentance, change, and restitution, with none forthcoming. We now have to take another course of action.”
As Throckmorton has reported on his blog, the Acts 29 action comes after evangelical leaders Paul Tripp and James MacDonald resigned as members of the church governing board, and ex-members staged a recent protest at the church.
The Acts 29 Network is a network of churches attempting to be “gospel-centered” and “missional.” Its mission is to plant new churches with an emphasis on holiness, humility, diversity and evangelism.
Driscoll stepped down as president of Acts 29 in March 2012, appointing Matt Chandler as his successor and moving the headquarters to Dallas, where Chandler is a pastor.
Driscoll’s spokesperson did not return requests for comment.
Earlier this year, Driscoll apologized for missteps in publishing and quit social media for the rest of 2014.

Some Notes on Mark Jeske's Prodigal Income

WELS officials stole this independent congregation and its endowment.
Worship stopped - mission accomplished. WELS likes bars and theaters a lot more.
Mark Jeske's helper, Pastor Ron Muetzel was directly involved.

Someone noted that Time of Grace showing an income of $140,000+ for Jim Johnson, one of its leaders, but nothing listed for Mark Jeske, who wants to "grow wealthy slowly." Great joke, Mark.

Some names on the Time of Grace form, as officers:

  • John Bauer.
  • Bruce Eberle, secretary.
  • Daryl Raabe, Chief Development Officer.
  • John Zimdars, president CEO.
  • Tim Lehman makes about $36,000.
  • Cliff Buelow is listed on the previous year's form.

I looked up St. Marcus and found no income listed for the congregation, but a lot of money listed for the St. Marcus Foundation, with Pastor Ron Muetzel as chairman of the foundation board. No pay is listed for anyone.

Parachurch groups can do more with creative accounting than an insurance company.

I theorize that there is a holding corporation of some type that serves as the umbrella organization. One can see similar shell games going on with Schwan cash distributions, where gifts are noted but the trail leads to an address, often the same address.

Wrecking Easy Care Roses. A Parable for the Church Shrinkers

$

This magenta Knock Out rose creates a blaze of color in our front yard,
with 60 blooms at once on  a total of 8 bushes.
I drove Mrs. Ichabod past a nearby house to show the wrecking of easy care roses, the same shrub roses we are growing.

Easy care does not mean "no care, no watering, no mulching, no pruning." They are not self-pruning. A rose bush does not read the ads, which say "self-pruning." They are endowed by their Creator with a simple plan - bloom, set seed, and go dormant.

They are purpose-driven to bloom on new wood, which means that pruning stirs them to grow more branches, send down more roots, and bloom more often.

The rose bushes of our distant neighbor are not mulched, not pruned, and not radiant with color. Like most red roses, those bushes are going bluish while drying up. The foliage (a big deal for rosarians) is drooping from lack of water and nutrition.

Plenty of blooms paint the area in color.

The Savior left relatively simple instructions to care for the Kingdom He established with His death, Resurrection, and Ascension.

  • Go
  • Teach all nations
  • Baptizing them in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Teaching them to observe all I have commanded.

Matthews 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Missing from this set of instructions:

  1. Stay in your plush office.
  2. Study under false teachers: abusive, dysfunctional dictators.
  3. Ape the business methods of unbelievers while begging for subsidies.
  4. Make loads of plans while sitting around doing almost nothing,
  5. Ignoring all that Jesus taught you about trusting in the Word.
Easy care of the Kingdom does not mean no care, no study of the Word, no reliance on the Word, no visiting of members and prospects. That is why so many congregations look like the eyesore of a garden near our home.

The Savior left us with a Promise, but that requires faith, not Manage by Objective Mission/Vision plans.

Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

By Norma Boeckler.

Trials

"One Christian who has been tried is worth a hundred who have not been tried, for the blessing of God grows in trials. He who has experienced them can teach, comfort, and advise many in bodily and spiritual matters."
Martin Luther, What Luther Says, An Anthology, 3 vols., ed., Ewald Plass, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1959, III, p. 1381. Genesis 27:28-29.

"In order to keep your faith pure, do nothing else than stand still, enjoy its blessings, accept Christ's works, and let him bestow His love upon you. You must be blind, lame, deaf, dead, leprous and poor, otherwise you will stumble at Christ. That Gospel which suffers Christ to be seen and to be doing good only among the needy, will not belie you."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, I, p. 110. Third Sunday in Advent. Matthew 11:2-10.

"We have the comfort of this victory of Christ--that He maintains His Church against the wrath and power of the devil; but in the meantime we must endure such stabs and cruel wounds from the devil as are necessarily painful to our flesh and blood. The hardest part is that we must see and suffer all these things from those who call themselves the people of God and the Christian Church. We must learn to accept these things calmly, for neither Christ nor the saints have fared better."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, III, p. 263. Sunday after Ascension, Exaudi. John 15:26-16:4.

"Therefore God must lead us to a recognition of the fact that it is He who puts faith in our heart and that we cannot produce it ourselves. Thus the fear of God and trust in Him must not be separated from one another, for we need them both, in order that we may not become presumptuous and overconfident, depending upon ourselves. This is one of the reasons why God leads His saints through such great trials."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, II, p. 21. First Sunday after Epiphany. Luke 2:41-52.

"Secondly, God permits His saints to suffer these trials as an example for others, both to alarm the carnally secure and to comfort the timid and alarmed...But when we see and hear that God has in like manner dealt with His saints and did not spare even His own mother, we have the knowledge and comfort that we need not despair in our trials, but remain quiet and wait until He helps us, even as He has helped all His saints."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, II, p. 40f. First Sunday after Epiphany, Second Sermon. Luke 2:41-52.

"Now it is the consolation of Christians, and especially of preachers, to be sure and ponder well that when they present and preach Christ, that they must suffer persecution, and nothing can prevent it; and that it is a very good sign of the preaching being truly Christian, when they are thus persecuted, especially by the great, the saintly, the learned and the wise."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, II, p. 97. Fourth Sunday after Epiphany. Matthew 8:23-27.

"Not only is Christ hidden from the world, but a still harder thing is it that in such trials Christ conceals himself even from His church, and acts as if He had forgotten, aye, had entirely forsaken and rejected it, since He permits it to be oppressed under the cross and subjected to all the cruelty of the world, while its enemies boast, glory and rejoice over it, as we shall hear in the next Gospel."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, III, p. 67. Second Sunday after Easter. John 10:11-16.

"There is another temptation also in the time of trouble which was punished severely among the people of Israel and which alas is common as compared to the other temptation and equally irrational. That temptation occurs before God's Word is heard; this after we hear the Word, namely thus: when we know that God has promised help in the time of any trouble, but are not content with it, go forward and will not abide His promise, but prescribe time, place, and manner for His help; and then if He does not come as we expect and desire, faith vanishes."
Martin Luther, Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, I, p. 366. Epiphany. Matthew 2:1-12.

God Sends the Rain To Teach the Apostates a Lesson

I joked with our helper about the predicted rain. Soon after - a cloudburst let loose on Springdale. According to the rain gauge in the street, which formed a large lake immediately, we had a real soaker. In fact, I tried to enjoy the storm outside on the covered porch. The storm changed from a steady drizzle, to a heavy rain, to Niagara Falls. I retreated indoors.

Rain cleans off all the vegetation at once, from the trees to the weeds to the flowers and vegetables. As the author of Plants Are Like People observed, they love a good bath too.

The rain and lightning bring down tons of usable (fixed) nitrogen for immediate use by all the plants. A brown lawn will turn green during the rain. Our lush growth of crabgrass became even denser. Nitrogen compounds inevitably bring growth to all plants and secondarily to us, since we need those crops to live and we eat the animals that graze on vegetation.

When our bodies dehydrate, cellular activity comes to a halt, since it depends on the osmotic movement of mineral salts, among other things. When the soil is dry, soil creatures slow down or cease functioning. The rain gives them life.

Living soil becomes more lively from a rainstorm, because the mass of eggs, larvae, insects, bacteria, and earthworms beneath enjoy the rain deep in the soil, thanks to the previous work of these creatures. Soil creatures cooperate in this gentle movement of soil, creating space and letting rain penetrate the lower levels.

Unlettered gardeners scrape the soil surface bare, so the rain evaporates faster. But God mulches His own plants, letting the dead leaves and flowers cover the soil

  • to hold in moisture,
  • prevent wind erosion,
  • and feed the soil creatures below.

The Creation gardener allows the divine purpose to increase and multiply at each level. A rainstorm will not do much for poorly maintained roses, except to let them live another month. If the roses are pruned and mulched, they will bloom in profusion after a storm - washed clean of dust and insects, fed down to their roots, gently aerated and manured by earthworms.

Isaiah 55:8 KJV For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

David Valleskey pretended to know something about Paul the Missionary, but the Apostle wrote this:

1 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV)

I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

"Of sin - because they do not believe on Me."

The rainstorms reward the believer who understands that the Word always accomplishes His will and never returns voice. Moreover, the Word prospers His work.

The Word widens the gap between believers and apostates. Believers are comforted, even though though the apostates punish them and drive them away. The apostates are taught too - in a sense. They become more blinded and hardened by their encounter with the divine Word. The more they play with words and pretend to be believers, the more God makes them wander in a daze, with their disciples trailing behind them.

"The district is peaceful again, Lord Vader."

KJV Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Eighth Sunday After Trinity

Lord God, heavenly Father, we most heartily thank Thee that Thou hast caused us to come to the knowledge of Thy word. We pray Thee: graciously keep us steadfast in this knowledge unto death, that we may obtain eternal life; send us now and ever pious pastors, who faithfully preach Thy word, without offense or false doctrine, and grant them long life. Defend us from all false teachings, and frustrate Thou the counsels of all such as pervert Thy word, who come to us in sheep's clothing, but are inwardly ravening wolves, that Thy true Church may evermore be established among us, and be defended and preserved from such false teachers, through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

The Good Tree - Faith

Luther described false teachers this way, and we should not forget that they have these same characteristics today.

Luther says this about false teachers:

False Doctrine Tolerated

"And such false teachers have the good fortune that all their folly is tolerated, even though the people realize how these act the fool, and rather rudely at that. They have success with it all, and people bear with them. But no patience is to be exercised toward true teachers! Their words and their works are watched with the intent of entrapping them, as complained of in Psalm 17:9 and elsewhere. When only apparently a mote is found, it is exaggerated to a very great beam. No toleration is granted. There is only judgment, condemnation and scorn. Hence the office of preaching is a grievous one. He who has not for his sole motive the benefit of his neighbor and the glory of God cannot continue therein. The true teacher must labor, and permit others to have the honor and profit of his efforts, while he receives injury and derision for his reward."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 110f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. Psalm 17:9.

God Punishes Ingratitude by Allowing False Teachers

"In the second place such teachers are disposed to bring the people into downright bondage and to bind their conscience by forcing laws upon them and teaching works-righteousness. The effect is that fear impels them to do what has been pounded into them, as if they were bondslaves, while their teachers command fear and attention. But the true teachers, they who give us freedom of conscience and create us lords, we soon forget, even despise. The dominion of false teachers is willingly tolerated and patiently endured; indeed, it is given high repute. All those conditions are punishments sent by God upon them who do not receive the Gospel with love and gratitude."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. John 5:43.

False Teachers Flay Disciples to Bone

"In the third place, false teachers flay their disciples to the bone, and cut them out of house and home, but even this is taken and endured. Such, I opine, has been our experience under the Papacy. But true preachers are even denied their bread. Yet this all perfectly squares with justice! For, since men fail to give unto those from whom they receive the Word of God, and permit the latter to serve them at their own expense, it is but fair they should give the more unto preachers of lies, whose instruction redounds to their injury. What is withheld from Christ must be given in tenfold proportion to the devil. They who refuse to give the servant of truth a single thread, must be oppressed by liars."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

Avarice in False Teachers

"Fourth, false apostles forcibly take more than is given them. They seize whatever and whenever they can, thus enhancing their insatiable avarice. This, too, is excused in them."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

They Lord It Over Us

"Fifth, these deceitful teachers, not satisfied with having acquired our property, must exalt themselves above us and lord it over us...We bow our knees before them, worship them and kiss their feet. And we suffer it all, yes, with fearful reverence regard it as just and right. And it is just and right, for why did we not honor the Gospel by accepting and preserving it?"
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

We Are Dogs and Foot-Rags

"Sixth, our false apostles justly reward us by smiting us in the face. That is, they consider us inferior to dogs; they abuse us, and treat us as foot-rags."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

Matthew 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

This is one of the best known and least followed passages on the efficacy of the divine Word.

The good tree does not describe virtue or merit, but the result of the righteousness of faith. Because believers receive the forgiveness of sin through faith, the good tree is the justified sinner.

The doctrine of works is the religion of the world, and people slip into it easily. They define good and evil solely by what a person does, with virtue described as whatever is accepted by that group or sect or cult or political group.

Some think that anyone from their school or seminary is automatically good or incapable of anything really wrong. And they believe that anyone outside that circle is de facto wrong or evil.

Jesus makes this very clear - It is not from saying, Lord, Lord, or claiming to perform miracles in His Name. He will say, "Depart from Me, evildoers."

How Do We Know?
How do we know the good tree is symbolic of those justified by faith - and not as often assumed by people, good through works?

So many claim the Scriptures are infallible and inerrant, and they are - but they do not follow through with their studies.

John 16:8 tells us what sin is. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, because "they do not believe on Me."

The unbelieving world starts with works and defines what is good by condemning evil and beating down sin by condemning sin, outlawing sin, punishing sin, and really getting nowhere. We have heard about the abuse of children for decades, but it is worse than ever. Why? Because the Christian message has been lost and parents do not care for their children. Their base nature takes over. Unbelieving society takes a few stabs at correction, but the blind are leading the blind. Children are a cost and a bother. They are dirty, messy, smelly, and cry a lot.

In contrast, a Christian family is energized by the Gospel and fully away of sin and forgiveness at all times. Believing parents bear the fruit of love, and that love naturally goes to those who are most dependent on them. Children remain children, with all the bad things natural for their age, but parents delight in raising them, helping them, teaching them, and enjoying them.

Simply by raising children in faith, believing parents set the stage for the growth of the Kingdom of God, which is good in itself. His governance will have no end. It will grow until the end of time, as Isaiah 9 predicted.

Those children are most likely to have believing children who also bear fruit in the Gospel.

And this does not simply apply to parents but to all Christians. There can be one person who hears the Word and believes. And that starts a new chain of believers, as God predicted in Isaiah 55. The Word always has an effect, and God prospers that effect.

The Bible Is Consistent
Because the Word of God is one unified Truth, we know that one verse cannot contradict another verse. Through faith we have the righteousness of Christ, which is the definition of "good" in the Bible.

Jesus commended faith in all those who professed their belief in Him. The Canaanite women continue to ask Him to heal her daughter, even though all the outward signs were negative toward her and her pleas. She continued to believe in Him and in His compassion, and her prayer was granted.

From what I hear and read, I think most people believe in the infinite power of God. Even those people who denounce God are confessing that in their own disturbed way. If God is so powerful, why doesn't He cure cancer or feed all the children, they ask out loud.

People who resent that God has not answered their prayers in their way - they are confessing this power too. He has it but will not share it with me. He seems inordinately fond of apostates and unbelievers.

The other part of faith in belief in God's infinite compassion. That is described so well in Luther's sermons and commentaries, when he writes about hardships and bearing the cross. (Those quotations have been viewed almost 19,000 times.)

God's compassion is shown in the way He deals with hardships, trials, and the cross. All these things happen to keep us close to Him.

When someone goes to school and endures even more schooling at a seminary, he is greeted with all kinds of praise for wanting to become a minister. All the kindly people have something good to say about that. Vicarage is often easy because it is a big established church where people are used to being kind to the vicar and his wife.

But when he begins in his first church, all kinds of trouble arise. If he is a believer (let's not assume) and preaches the Word of faith, the demons of Hell arise to chew on him and attack his family. They pick on his children, his wife, and everything about him.

From Luther's standpoint, this is a perfect example of the Gospel dividing people and being especially effective. If the congregation is lulled to sleep, the opposition is slight and the church officials are happy. The temptations are great to give the unbelievers and the apostate synod leaders what they want, peace and money. But lo, if the teaching of faith in Jesus causes an uproar and a riot, as it did with Paul's preaching, everyone wants to shut that down.

So the new pastor has a dilemma, whether to please man or please God. Jesus clearly teaches that faith in Him is God-pleasing. Satan likewise teaches that worship of him will be rewarded on earth (leaving out the second part, which is eternal torture).

Satanic temptation is to tell a congregation, a pastor, an individual - You are doing nothing. You are a failure. You are mocked and scorned by everyone. You have no friends, except for other zanies like you. Give up this fanaticism and be reasonable.

The truth of the Gospel is this - that is the rewarding moment, when it is clear that the Word of God has alarmed them. They believe - but their hides bristle. They are like the dogs who cannot attack but who put up a big show by raising their hackles and snarling.

I had a nasty little chihuahua follow me around the neighborhood. He was known as a biter and I knew he wanted my ankle in his teeth. I kept pointing at him, saying, "You." He kept 20 feet away, perhaps knowing that I might defend my ankles from his nasty little teeth.

The ankle-biters abound in this Age of Apostasy. They are blue ribbons rather than penalties. "I must be pleasing God, because the great, the saintly, and the wise are going out of their way to be mean."

I was going to wrap up book publishing for the 10th time in my life when one of my Old Testament students wrote, "Keep publishing for the Kingdom, Dr. Jackson." The individual does not know me personally, but that was quite a message. It does not matter if all the "conservatives" ban me and refuse to do anything to promote the work done - which they should love to read.

Everything done in faith glorifies God's Name, and it will prosper.

A Double-Minded Man Is Unstable in All His Ways

The Silver Marks:
Jeske, Schroeder, and Driscoll -
also sing in perfect harmony.

Polluted WELS Blog has gone silent for five days. His big target was the Jeske Mystical Experience, formerly known as Change or Die! conferences. No one took much notice of them, so Jeske expanded the numbers and loot involved.

Some are expecting me to criticize PW for not blogging every day. I do not know anything about him, and I have no contacts at all with him. He has already done a lot of good by telling the truth about WELS - from the inside.

I see almost no follow-up among those who agree with him. I am not criticizing those who have posted with their names, but the hundreds who have done nothing at all.

Jon-Boy Buchholz, who can walk through a septic tank and call it a lake, bailed out quickly. He obviously felt the heat. One little blog had an effect because the truth divides the liars from the rest.

Unfortunately, the divide-and-conquer method of WELS has also been effective. Individuals are divided against themselves.

James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

The inner debate continues.

Pumpkin in the Compost

A pumpkin has sprouted from my compost. I am not surprised since I planted many seeds in there. The dry weather may have kept the compost from providing enough moisture to keep them all going. Some people water their compost in dry weather, since that keeps the decomposition more active.

I will start watering the pumpkin, because it will be fun to watch it climb out of the compost and trail across the ground.

The fence garden has warty gourd vines and pumpkins growing on it. The gourds are already forming. Pole beans have climbed the fence, using graceful tendrils, bloomed and started fruiting. The pumpkins and gourds use larger supports since they have more weight to support.

Unfortunately, my neighbor's gate adjoins our fence, so the climbing plants are wrapping themselves around the gate too, the only way to access the yard for mowing. I am picturing the mowers' dismay when green vines are impeding the gate. But they can tear the vines, which grow back soon enough. The gate will be de-vine.

Our helper complained of weeds in the roses. "Where did we go wrong?" I suggested that we left too much room in the newspaper layer for the witchgrass to grow through. But weed seeds can also land on top of the mulch and grow in the sunshine, rain, and watering.

"Everyone would be a gardener if there were no weeds," I solemnly declared. He trimmed while I pulled witchgrass, devilish stuff but easy to grab. The only problem is finding the end of it. I will dump the pile of witchgrass in a corner of the sunny garden, where crabgrass is rampant. Some trimming and extra shade will suppress it the crabgrass.

Those who want to burn weeds with fire are going to set something ablaze sooner or later. Weed seeds are in the air and soil at all times. The best approach to weeds is to kill off noxious weeds like poison ivy and re-purpose the rest.

I found some beautiful specimens of pigweed last night. I showed them to our helper before I composted them. "They are edible and have good nutrition," I said helpfully. He responded, "I will rely on groceries, until the apocalypse. I can eat pigweed then." The name does not help.

There is a good title - Apocalypse Gardening Book - Nutritious Weeds for the Discerning. Free Supplement - How To Treat Poison Ivy.

Our lawn and rose garden looked great when we were done. Our neighbor with the viney gate was not being visited by her crew, so we mowed her front lawn too.

My friends are sending me photos of exotic sites and natural wonders they are visiting for their vacation trips. I am glad for that, since I get to see the same sites for free. But I find plenty of natural wonders in the backyard and rose garden.

Gardeners get endless pleasure from seeing how quickly a little labor is turned into food, flowers, enough to enjoy and to share. We took Sunday's flowers to the gardening neighbor. His wife is crazy about roses. Mrs. Ichabod handed the vase to him and said, "Your wife might like a few roses. She might guess where they came from." He grinned. We had large purple roses, an orange rose, and several magenta Knock Out roses in the base.

Bees are working the roses, sunflowers, and gourd flowers. That made me think of the night pollinators. They work on colorless but perfumed flowers. In the starlight and moonlight, there is no color to rely on, so these creatures focus on aroma. Besides, the white flowers show up better in dim light. Who worked that out, I wonder? Did the plants have a convention and vote to go AM or PM? If so, the animals, like bats, had to know where they were welcome to browse and transfer pollen.

Creation declares itself at every step of gardening. Mulching and composting do their work according to principles established by the Creating Word. Nothing was created apart from Him - John 1.

The warty gourd clan is valuable for cornucopia displays.
Later the dry seeds inside make good noise-makers.

Worshipful Master is the Sun in the East -

A Travesty Examined, Part Nine

The "worship music" at the Christian Leadership Experience's ecumenical worship services will be provided by the SON Band. The SON Band is associated with Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. They play for Pilgrim's contemporary worship service entitled "The SON Experience".

Pilgrim's website provides links to videos of the SON Experience. You can find themhere. I haven't had a chance to watch all of the videos in their entirety, but what I've seen is extremely concerning.

"Experience!"

Most concerning is a "SON Message" in which Dr. Scott Gostchock (who is not a pastor) preaches a "sermon" in which he states the following:
  • It isn't good enough to preach God's Word from the Bible because that's just "words on a page".
  • We must somehow "experience" God's presence apart from those words on a page.
  • It's not the job of the church to condemn sin.
The entire "sermon" is pure enthusiasm--the teaching that one must experience God's presence apart from Word and Sacrament.

If you watch the video, notice how many times Gostchock uses the word experience. Notice that this takes place during a service called The SON Experience. Notice that Gostchock will be speaking and the SON Band will be performing at something called the Christian Leadership Experience.

This is clear proof that the Church Growth leaders within the WELS have traded a theology centered on the Means of Grace for a theology centered on human experience and emotion.

A member of the Synodical Council (WELS)
and Don Patterson's parish said this.

I didn't manage to get all the way through Gostchock's "Community in Christ" message. I stopped around 2:22. Maybe he was speaking poorly (in which case, shame on him) or maybe he really is wishy-washy on the Trinity (in which case, a lot of shame of him) but he talked about God having three distinct beings, parts, pieces...

This runs counter to Col. 2:9 "For in Christ all the fullness of the deity lives in bodily form..."
Jesus is truly 100% true God. He is not a part of or just one third God.
Same with the Father. He is truly 100% true God. Not just one third God.
And Same with the Spirit. He is 100% true God.

Yet, paraphrasing the Athanasian Creed, we do not have 300%. We do not have three Gods, but one God.

Nor do we have a piecemeal God.

He would have best said that there are three distinct persons in the Trinity and left it at that.

I paused writing this and listened to the speech a little more. I get what he's trying to do. He doesn't want Christians who just sit there and read the Bible and are separate from their fellow Christians. But the way he gets to that point feels very wrong. Claiming that the Bible isn't enough and we need to look at each other and see Christ "in us" is so very dangerous. Schwaermer-enthusiasm.

With his message Mr. Gostchock wanted to talk about "community." How he ever got that from the text he read is unbelievable. In fact, after the initial minute or two he simply left the text behind and spoke about what he wanted to speak about. Might this best describe the CGM movement in WELS, GIA particularly?

"We need to experience God's presence among us...sometimes that comes from just this overwhelming sense of peace...sometimes it comes from the warm embrace of a friend...sometimes it comes from us giving to others. We need to experience that love of God...its more than just words on paper."

These words are taken directly from the linked video. I also see what the speaker is attempting to communicate, which I think is the need to have a living, active faith. That is a fine thing to have an active faith, but any real faith is bound to be active through the work of the Holy Spirit. If faith is not active, it is probably because it has been starved of the things it needs to live and grow--the Means of Grace.

The linked sermon sounds like pure Pietism to me. Read Jacob Spener and you will see the exact same sentiments: use methods to encourage holy living, which is the only real measure of one's true Christianity.

I do agree though. It is not about just "words on a page" because God's Holy Word is not just "words on a page. To apply such a flippant remark to the Holy Word of God is very dangerous. Again, we are talking about the very word of God, the mighty double-edged sword that always has effect and needs no help from our pathetic efforts to be more effective. We experience God's presence among us in Word and Sacrament, not in feel-good, happy-clappy emotional and enthusiast worship.

As a female lay person, I would like to know more from the
learned men here on this blog about this SON group and situation. This is a sincere statement.

When planning a wedding in a WELS congregation, the participants of the service, including the soloist, organist, etc are required to be in affiliation. I adhered, without issue, to this when making my own wedding preparations several years ago.

Reviewing the SON Experience and their website, I see no connection that these are WELS members. Have things changed and it is acceptable to have services, without confessional members within or associated with WELS, providing the music? I don't see a separation form Pilgrim Lutheran and S.O.N. One can only assume they are affiliated.

This group proclaims their Vision as: "Savior of the Nations services through the power of the Spirit will reach and teach the Twin Cities one soul at a time through God's elect."

I viewed their individual biographical information at:
http://www.sonexperience.com/whoweare.html

And that's where my questions and concerns are--their biographies. Do we now avoid or delete any religious education? Otherwise, I'm sure there are much more talented starving artists that I can get together and play and sing off a sheet of music. Executive Director Dr. Scott Gostchock lists no affiliations in his brief bio. Just a minister. My question is where, when, for how long? These have to be my questions. My Christian upbringing told me to ask.

Or is mute because they are reaching out to the unchurched. But they don't say unchurched...they say one soul at a time. That one soul includes me. Do I join in service with a minister whose anonymous experience is with a Methodist or Presbyterian church? Or is it even a church service and none of this applies because its an experience.

The responses to my verbal questions about these blogs are Don't read, stay away, or just shake their head...they fail to realize that Google, Yahoo, and ever other search engine will spider these pages faster than they can tell me what or why to avoid. But I'm reading supporting documentation. I see no vagueness here; but I do see it on the S.O.N. biographies. From rationalwiki: Lying by omission, otherwise known as exclusionary detailing, is lying by either omitting certain facts or by failing to correct a misconception.

I enjoy reading your views on a much higher level than mine so forgive a more simplistic view of this group and issue. I'm learning with your responses to each other. May the Lord bless me and keep me and I continue to do so.

Pastor Flack (if I may be so bold as to address you in such manner) - Thank you for once again doing the job that the synod should be doing and do not, will not, or cannot. Why is it that so many of these churches/conferences/pastors, etc... are not properly vetted? Who's minding the store? Why is it people must find out about such crap as goes on at Pilgrim, and this insane leadershi* meeting from an anonymous blog, rather than the District and Synod Presidents? Older WELS pastor have told me in the past that they were proud to be "ragged individuals," and to both stay out of neighboring pastors' business, and insist that they stay out of theirs. Everyone was - and still is - very afraid of being known as a "busy-body in another man's parish." They are more afraid of that than of false teaching or false teachers! How foolish and stupid! And irresponsible! What does the body have leaders for in the first place but to monitor doctrine and practice? I'm so glad I am no longer a part of this mess of a church! Sad for those still stuck in it.

GJ - You are so wrong, Black Sheep. WELS pastors meddle unlike any other breed I have seen (except Paul Tiefel in the CLC - he should transfer). WELS ministers think they are the pastor of their previous congregations and any other congregation where they have friends or relatives. The District Popes and their assistants are even worse, meddling to make sure the evil and the corrupt triumph in each and every case. See the Anything Goes District for examples, Deputy Doug and Zank the Rank.

Female lay person: they are all WELS. Pilgrim is WELS. The Pilgrim website lists this affiliation, and also links to a WELS statement of beliefs.

GJ - I don't have their playing schedule, but I am betting they market themselves to all groups, all denominations. Jeske's disciples follow him in this regard - and there is a lot more loot for everyone this way.
Koine charges $3,000 just to show up. So yes, they are unionistic. So are y'all, because you reject this but stay in WELS.

Regarding Anonymous comments at 5:14 PM:

Yes, Pilgrim Lutheran is WELS. If you dig on the web site, you might find it, eventually.

Check the home page. Nothing on it about WELS. In fact, you have to look pretty hard to know it is even Lutheran. Check the header. "Pilgrim" in extra large font. "Lutheran" is in tiny font beneath it. Go to the bottom of the home page. "Pilgrim Church and School"! Where is the "Lutheran"?

Is this what it means to be confessional Lutheran? To hide the fact that you are Lutheran? There is no confession here. This is Church Growth; to hide the fact that you are Lutheran.
Check the "About" page. Look long and hard to find "Lutheran" or "WELS".

We did a project on Intrepid about WELS Church home pages several months back. A number of people scoffed about the study and what we found. What we found is that more and more WELS congregations are suppressing the fact that they are WELS ... or even Lutheran.

Where do you think this comes from? It comes from the likes of the 2015 Christian Leadership Experience.

Lay people of the WELS, wake up!

I'm not a member of Pilgrim and agree with most of the thoughts on this blog. I do not find that Pilgrim is hiding the WELS affiliation. I often look at other churches websites and if the affiliation is not on the first page then I go to the "Links" tab or the "About us- What do we Believe" section. BOTH had the WELS affiliation clearly listed. Lets not make this something it isn't. Focus on the band, the style, the message, those are worthwhile discussions but Pilgrim's website doesn't look like it is purposely hiding it's (sic) affiliation.

Pilgrim Lutheran is the "St. Mark Church of DePere" of the Twin Cities. They have the full blessing of the DP. Always have. I recall, many years ago, a former pastor of mine returning from a service at Pilgrim, nearly livid. Not only was the band mounted in the front of the assembly area facing the audience -- in the location and orientation normally taken by Called Ministers of the Word as they address the congregation by the command and in the stead of Christ -- but members of that band would spontaneously preach their own mini-sermons to the congregation, or engage in impromptu "ex corde" prayer, on themes related to the subject of the music they were singing at the audience. Worse, the most dominant "worship minister" during his visit was one of the female vocalists... No problem with that sort of thing in the WELS anymore, though. Not in their district.

This "SON Band" looks pretty young. They must be new. Several years ago, it was the in-thing for older men to be leading these bands. At least there was some maturity present... HA! One woman from our congregation was mortified, however: "Look at these gray haired old men! With pony-tails and electric guitars!! In church!!! What a bunch of overgrown children!!!" Yeah, other guys that age just go out and buy a corvette... it's called mid-life crisis...

Anyway, the worship entertainment scene in the Twin Cities seems to be a fairly tight-knit. I have several evangelical friends and family members involved. Everyone seems to know everyone else, especially the groups that have been around awhile. I know that they often go places to hear each other play, will jam or practice together, will even flip gigs with each other and trade band members. I recall -- again, awhile back, now -- that there was a flap with one WELS band regarding this kind of involvement with Evangelical "worship ministers." Someone suggested that there might be a Fellowship issue involved by "worshiping" with, and "practicing for worship" with these other non-WELS, non-Lutheran "worship ministers", especially given that in many cases there was joint prayer and study of the Scriptures involved. The responses I heard were something like, "Na, we're just tradin' licks" or "Na, we're just bouncing musical ideas off one another" or "Don't you think they would benefit from the influence of a REAL Christian, I mean, like, you know, a WELS Lutheran?" or "It's our Evangelism ministry" or ... a whole host of excuses which made it very plain that (a) these musicians see very clearly that what they do is not worship, per se, it is entertainment in a worship venue, and that (b) these worship entertainers view themselves as Ministers of the Word. The only things that makes what they do "worship" is the venue (because if they did the same thing in a saloon they wouldn't see it as worship at all) and the fact that they have appointed themselves Ministers of the Word, and thus spiritual leaders of those they find themselves addressing through their entertainment efforts.

Peace - in Aiken South Carolina. Look at his wife and child - they root for the local football team. See their jerseys. Did Paul cheer for the gladiators of Corinth and don their livery? Why doesn't Jonathan?

Paul Tiefel is perfect for the CLC (sic).

The CLC (sic) website features a video by Pastor Paul Tiefel, first cousin James Tiefel of WELS. The CLC clergy are still re-living the 1950s. Both Tiefels are nicknamed "Teufel" or devil by those who know them best.

Lacking any Gospel at all, this Mormon-like recital about Holy Mother Sect declares that the whole world has been justified (without faith). L. W. Schierenbeck declares that as a logical conclusion. My wording - "He has died for the ungodly. The world is ungodly. The world is justified."

Conference of Presidents
The Conference of Presidents (COP) of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod is composed of the presidents of each of the twelve districts, plus the synod president, the first vice president, and the second vice president.  The WELS recording secretary serves as secretary and as an advisory member of the Conference of Presidents.

Members of the Conference of Presidents pictured:

Back row, from left:  Rev. Charles Degner (MN District), Rev. John Seifert (MI District), Rev. Donald Patterson (SC District), Rev. Ted Lambert (PNW District), Rev. Jon Buchholz (AZ-CA District), Rev. John Guse (SA District), Rev. Douglas Engelbrecht (NW District) and Rev. David Rutschow (SEW District)
Front row, from left:  Rev. Peter Naumann (D-M District), Rev. Earle Treptow (NE District), Rev. James Huebner (First Vice President), Rev. Mark Schroeder (President), Rev. Joel Voss (Second Vice President), Rev Herbert Prahl (WW District), Rev. Donald Tollefson (NA District), and Rev. Robert Pasbrig (Recording Secretary)

Each of the district presidents also serves as a parish pastor and is responsible for supervision of doctrine and practice within his district.  The district presidents authorize ordinations and installations in the district, record transfers, and report calls and service changes. They supervise circuit pastors and fill vacancies on district boards and committees.  They chair their district conventions at least biennially. No one is in state prison at the moment.

The Conference of Presidents serves as the Assignment Committee, assigning first calls to graduates of Martin Luther College and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.  They also assign vicars and tutors. The Conference of Presidents approves the solicitation of funds for support of synodical programs.  They make necessary appointments as prescribed by the synod bylaws.  The COP appoints the contributing editors of Forward in Christ magazine.

The group generally meets face-to-face four times per year.  In addition, they hold monthly teleconferences and members keep each other informed of what is happening in the districts via regular e-mail contact.

People Will Remember the Two Silver Marks and the COP for the Destruction of WELS

Mark Schroeder has become a trampoline for propelling Mark Jeske to greater heights. The Coven of Presidents deserves plenty of recognition too.

I have to play the role of Dean Wormer, spelling out a few truths - helping people to find the obvious facts that are all over the Net.

But it is a great way to get instant CRM status
and an even faster call to Texas.

Polluted WELS is doing a notable job in publishing good material and signed comments from various people.

WELS is 100% unionistic now. At the leadership level they work with the Lavender Mafia of ELCA. Through Thrivent they help fund Planned Parent abortions - and even worse - the hideous propaganda of that genocidal charity.

WELS is also unionistic because many of the members and pastors do not agree with the Jeske-Schroeder apostasy, but they remain. They give money to the great apostasy. They worship with the apostates and attend their odious meetings. They groan and complain - and yet remain.

Is this country free? Are people so afraid of men that they no longer tremble at God's Word? The desolating sacrilege has already been set up in front of the altar.

The DPs should shiver with terror when a layman shows his discernment of the Word.

Irony defined - Tiefel offering medical advice.

If you want to find some interesting deletions, open  The Lutheran Hymnal, comparing it to the Liberal Book of Weirdness (ALC/LCA) and Christian Worship (WELS). CW took feminist languages many steps beyond the LBW, even tainting the Creeds. Are you surprised to see women teaching men and women preaching from the altar? Mark Schroeder fast-tracked what was already at full speed in the cult.

Other comparisons can be made. The Methodists got rid of the Virgin Birth from their own classic hymnal. "Offspring of the Virgin's womb" became "Offspring of the Chosen One." Although the words were restored, they still appear in printed versions here and there.

Look up Luther's great battle hymn, "O Lord Look Down." TLH #260. Compare. Anything missing?

I recall that Selnecker's hymn was trimmed also.

Omitted hymns ought to count as well, especially when buddies of the editors get their doggerel published as hymns.

If anything gives away the apostasy of the Lutherans today, it is their Mormonizing of the hymns - just before they dumped them for no-talent rockers like Koine, Fidei, and Son.

Getting away with the edits paved the way, as so many slippages do.

Anyone who objects once and does nothing is "Confessional." Another who objects twice and gathers the opposition is a nutcase violating the Eighth Commandment.
