NWA editorial: The verdict is in | NWADG:

"Nov. 7, 2015, just a few days before the filing deadline for candidates seeking a spot in the next year's election. Woods had served as a state representative from Springdale from 2007 to 2013 then as state senator from 2013 to 2017. He loved the role and appeared to embrace it practically as a full-time job. His 2015 announcement that he wouldn't seek re-election shocked the political world of Northwest Arkansas. And thus began the questions about why.

The private unraveling had begun a couple of years earlier as Woods orchestrated the allocation of state government General Improvement Fund money to Ecclesia College in Springdale and a nascent nonprofit conceived by an associate. On Thursday, a federal court jury convicted Woods of 15 charges tied to public corruption in the form of kickbacks -- an elected official receiving payment in exchange for using his influence to send taxpayer money to the tiny, private Christian college and his buddy's creation, AmeriWorks. That friend, Milton "Rusty"Cranford, sits in a Missouri jail, awaiting his on trial for public corruption on unrelated charges.

The same jury that convicted Woods also found Randell Shelton Jr. of Kemp, Texas, guilty of 12 charges. He's a consultant/lobbyist who stood accused of being the middle man in arranging the payments from the college to Woods and another Republican state lawmaker, former Rep. Micah Neal of Springdale. Neal pleaded guilty more than a year ago for his part in the schemes and cooperated with prosecutors.

A fourth man charged, Ecclesia College president Oren Paris III, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy on the eve of the trial and agreed to work with prosecutors. None of the men have been sentenced.

It is beyond the space we have available today to detail the 32 charges on which Woods and Shelton were indicted. "

Pope John the Malefactor’s Message - Deny the Chief Article and Promote Justification without Faith - To Honor the Reformation

Pope John is not apt to teach, like his partners in ELCA, LCMS, and WELS.

Pope John the Malefactor’s Message:

"How can we do justice to celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation? This question is before us as we gather for our synod’s 100th annual convention. It is a question our congregations are asking as they arrange their area worship services this coming October. When our synod’s Centennial Committee looked at appropriate ways to honor back-to-back anniversaries (the 500th now and in 2018 the ELS 100th), it felt a significant way to wed the two was to implement a synod-wide Bible study. We are happy to say the project has come to fruition and is ready to be rolled out in our congregations this coming fall. The Bible study, Proclaiming God’s Truth, has been authored by members of our synod’s Doctrine Committee. The study includes a teacher’s guide and covers seven topics central to Lutheranism and to the history of our church body. The doctrines treated in the study are these: Objective Justification and Absolution, The Election of Grace and Conversion, The Divine Call, Church Fellowship, Adiaphora and Ceremonies, Mission Work, and Christian Education. "

This is a reminder of the Chief Article's meaning,
which WELS/ELS considers false doctrine.

Truth Crushed To Earth Shall Rise Again

What Does One Do in a Congregation Where Doctrinal Error Exists?

$

Luther was not born with a Greek New Testament in one hand and the Hebrew Old Testament in the other. He had to unlearn a lot of error, and he learned the Biblical languages later in life.

Individuals ask, from time to time, about being in congregation where error is taught, such as the omnipresent Universal Objective Justification, which is the norm for WELS-ELCA-ELS-LCMS-CLC (sic).

The Pietists say, "You must join a pure denomination - ours. All the rest are eeeevul." But as you see, and as they freely confess, the leaders of those groups teach the same ridiculous garbage, and glory in it, as Paul predicted in 2 Thessalonians 2.

Not all the pastors in each group teach UOJ. Some have IQs above room temperature and actually study and think on their own.

But the most sincere ministers are still trained in a terrible climate for learning Biblical doctrine. Some may think they have resisted it, but the influence remains to some degree. For example, practically every Lutheran pastor feels a bit odd about saying the word "faith" and may feel apologetic and defensive even when they know better.

This is where the informed layman, male or female, may ask questions and pursue the issue. After all, what good is this Biblical knowledge if it is not shared in a dark or foggy place?

Some ministers imagine that Objective Justification is just another word for the Atonement, doubtless because Atonement passages are always being cited as OJ (gasp, sigh, roll eyes toward heaven).

And therefore they imagine Subjective Justification means Justification by Faith. But the stolid Stormtroopers of UOJ do not teach that, even though they let people revert to Biblical thinking from hearing the Word and believing what God teaches.

Of course WELS teaches Universalism. Buchholz promoted it in his disastrous comedy of false doctrine. "Jesus Saved," past tense, finished, certain, lovingly enshrined in the WELS Holy of Holies - the Essay File.

Jon-Boy Buchholz denied to my face that WELS teaches Univesalism, and yet he does teach Universalism in his own miserable convention essay (gasp, sigh, roll eyes toward heaven). Confidential to the DP - most people in the world have never heard of you, your grandfather, your district, or your sect.

Therefore, someone can work on getting the issue studied and clarified in the congregation for several reasons -

  1. WELS taught Justification by Faith in the original Gausewitz Catechism. This continued until the vacuous Kuske catechism introducted UOJ.
  2. Until the dark reign of Matt the Fatt, the LCMS always taught Justification by Faith in its official catechisms. When challenged on behalf of Justification by Faith, as Pastor V. Harley did, LCMS did not smack him down or discipline him in any way.

  1. Luther, the Book of Concord, Chemnitz, Gerhard, Calov, and Quenstedt taught Justification by Faith.
  2. The crepidations of UOJ came from the Pietist era - or Error - and such confused teachers as Rambach, Quistorp, Bishop Martin Stephan, CFW  Walther and his devoted disciples.
  3. The Scriptures teach Justification by Faith, so the New NIV - loved by WELS especially - introduced an "all" to Romans 3, so they could read "all are justified" in their Synagogues of Satan.

Luther did not organize another church - Rome kicked him out. His approach was to teach the Word of God and let the Holy Spirit do its work - and the Spirit did just that.

Below is a graphic that has been viewed about 110,000 times. The words of Luther certainly apply when considering this doctrine - The Chief Article of the Christian Religion.

Some Questions To Ask about Justification

$

Here is some background about Justification.

People solemnly say, "OJ protects the doctrine of Justification."
Oh? How does an invented dogma - OJ - protect the Gospel? When did the Gospel need protection? A mighty shield and weapon or something weak that needs protecting?

Here are questions to ask:

  1. What is the Chief Article of Christianity? Where is this language found?
  2. Do you believe that God forgave the sins of the entire world? If so, when did that happen - at the death of Christ, His resurrection, or another time, such as the angelic announcement - Peace on earth? Where is this written?
  3. What does Objective Justification mean? It is not in the Bible or the Book of Concord.
  4. What does Subjective Justification mean? I have not found it in the Bible or the Book of Concord.
  5. What did our early catechisms teach?
  6. How did anyone teach Justification without OJ and SJ - and then only after the era of Pietism and rationalism at Halle University?
  7. Why should we teach what ELCA teaches - that the entire world is already saved?
  8. Why are we using the NIV, which has changed Paul's words about Justification in Romans 3?
  9. If Abraham is the example of Justification by Faith in Genesis 15, Romans 4, and Galatians, then who is our example of Justification without Faith?
  10. If Paul teaches OJ - as you claim - why does he clearly teach Justification by Faith? Does he contradict himself, because some of your leaders really hate Justification by Faith.
  11. The Gospel is the God-power unto salvation for everyone who believes in Romans 1:16, so how is everyone saved as DP Buchholz claims?
  12. I always heard "raised for our justification!" Romans 4:25, but then I read Romans 4:24 - if we believe... Who is mixed up?
  13. Romans 5 begins with Justification by Faith. Did Paul switch to OJ in the same chapter?
  14. The Means of Grace chapter, Romans 10, is clear about faith and forgiveness. Was Paul confused about this? Or are we?
  15. Is a seminary president from Canada more authoritative than Luther?
  16. If the Book of Concord says we should study Luther's Galatians Lectures, to learn more about Justification by Faith, why are we ignoring that book - and Luther - this anniversary year?
  17. Why do the liberal Lutherans and the conservative Lutherans hate Luther so much? But they still sell Luther trinkets and toys?
  18. Which is better - the original Small Catechism or the latest version and notes from our synod?

The Quia Marias Do Not Know, Acknowledge, or Trust The Book of Concord as Their Own

$

Here is an exercise - try to find a Synodical Conference leader saying Justification by Faith.

Ask around and all the Synodical Conference ministers will say they have a quia subscription to the Book of Concord. That means they agree with the Lutheran Confessions because (quia) they are a correct exposition of the Scriptures. And oh - the Scriptures are inerrant and infallible.

They are quia Marias because they do not have the courage to confess the truth of the Scriptures but march to the orders of their Fuller-trained, Trinity Divinity honed leaders. I hate to impugn the dignity of little girls by comparing the quia Marias to them. Little girls are more steadfast, more intrepid than the pastors who want to wear those labels.

A layman asked his pastor to teach a course about the Lutheran Confessions. The pastor said, "They are boring and irrelevant" as his reason for refusing.

Pastors were thrown into prison and exiled for those Confessions, but of course, many gave into the threats and silenced themselves about Calvin's odious dogmas. That is why I laughed at the "conservative" Lutheran leaders who pretended to admire Paul Gerhardt during the 400th anniversary of his birth. Did they look into the perfect mirror of the Law and see themselves persecuting the faithful with their grab-bag of dogmas and gimmicks?

Three blind guides, three blind guides,
See how they grin. See how they grin.
They all ran after the Fuller growth
For UOJ they all take oaths
Did you ever see such useless blokes
As three blind guides?

We all know that most congregations do not sing Paul Gerhardt very often. One Bethany Lutheran Seminary professor said about Johann Gerhard, "I love his hymns." Wrong! So the fakery about the Gerhardt anniversary did not make much of a dent on Lutherdom or the laity.

This year, the conservative sects had trouble disguising their contempt for Luther, especially their loathing of his doctrine.

  1. The LCMS made OJ/SJ official in their new "catechism" and doubtless in their $90 Dogma-tanic (two volumes of bilge).
  2. The ELS celebrated the 500th with another tedious offering on OJ/SJ.
  3. WELS has forgotten and disposed of Gausewitz, whose catechism was a simple presentation of the Scriptures behind Luther's catechism. They celebrated the upcoming Reformation festivities by kicking out Rydecki for teaching Justification by Faith. To show their colors, they hosted Natalie Pratt's phony Reformation shindig, which made lots of synod money disappear and attracted almost no one.
This settles UOJ once and for all, but the Quia Marias do not care for the Confessions at all.

Our Congregation's Attorney - Glen Kotten - Found a Post from 2011 That He Appreciated

Hi Pastor Jackson, I stumbled across this letter from Brett Meyer on your blog, very quality writing and it expresses my sentiment with the Lutheran sects. In Christ, Glen

From 2011

Brett Meyer has left a new comment on your post "Letter to the UOJ Fanatics in WELS, Missouri, the ...":

WELS, ELS and LCMS Pastor Mark Jeske from the Time of Grace money sponge speaks for the (W)ELS, carrying the UOJ banner high with:

On the other hand, Schuller does have an important message for all public proclaimers of God’s Word. If we are not careful, our law-messages can be presented so forcefully that they stick in hearers’ minds more than our gospel-messages. We don’t want Christians’ dominant phrase of self-description to be “I am a poor, miserable sinner.” The truth is that forgiveness trumps sin, resurrection trumps death, hope trumps fear, and Christ rules. If you believe the Christian gospel, you automatically become an optimist. We can indeed do all things through him who gives us strength.

Jeske is following his Satanic Mentor Leonard Sweet in elevating man and perverting Christianity.

---

Dear UOJ Fanatics,

Many of you complain loudly--behind closed doors and in secret emails--about the disgusting, embarrassing, and anti-Christian antics of your group. I just want to mention that you are just as much at fault as they are, for supporting false doctrine that naturally leads to what they are doing:
  1. Hiding the name Lutheran.
  2. Hiding the sacraments.
  3. Removing the liturgy and Creeds.
  4. Plagiarizing Groeschel's sermons.
  5. Imitating the worst of the Emergent Church fads.
  6. Adulterating the Word to attract more people.
  7. Offering bad music as a replacement for sacred music.
  8. Yardwork clothes worn on the stage, which was once the chancel.
  9. Giving treats, sodas, and coffee to consume during the service.
  10. Mocking worship by dancing in front of the altar in a preaching gown.
  11. Baiting the hook, offering soccer and head-banger music if youth will pretend to engage in Bible study of some type, always imported from false teachers.
  12. Working with ELCA on religious projects.
  13. Raising money from different sects that apparently do not agree on doctrine, although they do agree on false doctrine.
  14. Funding the Salvation Army! (for the babies)
  15. Women's ordination and crypto-women's ordination...women usurping authority, teaching men, and leading worship.

You think they are the bad guys, but they are only carrying out the implications of Universal Objective Justification, which is your only doctrine and their foundational belief.

You are conservative Pietists, you complainers, while they are the liberal Pietists.

This is why. most of you in the fragments and diaspora of the Synodical Conference bow to the strange opinion of Halle professor Georg Christian Knapp. Pietism borrowed this concept from Calvinism, and Knapp wrote it into his lectures. Woods translated the golden sentences which are the core of your doctrine and practice, and that book is still in print.

I will reprint it from the copy I own. This book was already in circulation in English and German before C. F. W. Walther landed in New Orleans. And it is still in print today. UOJ is the doctrine of ELCA and the Universalists.

This is very conveniently expressed by the terms objective and subjective justification. Objective justification is the act of God, by which he proffers pardon to all through Christ; subjective, is the act of man, by which he accepts the pardon freely offered in the Gospel. The former is universal, the latter not.

Double-justification (UOJ) merges the Atonement with justification by faith, yielding a sterile mulish doctrine for mules to follow. And you do follow it. You talk fellowship, but you ignore it. You talk closed communion and wink at open communion. You condemn ELCA's gaity, but you tolerate your own college (in WELS) promoting a plagiarized gay video. You are so superior to ELCA but you work with them on religious projects and teach the same sterile mulish doctrine.

Mulish is too polite for your pursuit of forgiveness without faith. But let's go over what you love so dearly:
  1. UOJ omits the Means of Grace completely.
  2. UOJ denies original sin, with the bizarre claim that babies are born already justified, without Holy Baptism, already forgiven, without the Word.
  3. UOJ separates the Holy Spirit from the Word, making all of you adherents Enthusiasts, false teachers condemned by the Book of Concord you ignore so famously.
  4. UOJ confuses Atonement and justification by faith, pronouncing it a sin to distinguish between the two.
  5. UOJ lies about its origins, because it cannot be found before Pietism, whether in Luther, the Book of Concord, or the post-Concordists. The honest scholars admit that, but you do not.
  6. UOJ denigrates faith and often describes the order of salvation in terms of decision theology.
  7. UOJ is so derogatory toward faith that its most consistent followers, like Schleiermacher, simply drop faith and teach Universalism.
  8. UOJ uses the terms "all are saved" in many different documents, so the Universalism is already there, though hidden behind the fig-leaf of you gotta believe it.
  9. UOJ is Antinomian, teaching that the Law no longer exists, but you adherents are especially legalistic, making up more rules than the famous rabbis of old - not that the rules ever apply to you.
I know from many communications that your groups are not united in this ridiculous doctrine, perhaps because it was not made "official" until fairly recently - the Brief Statement of 1932 and the Kuske Catechism. Missouri and WELS both taught justification by faith, even though Walther and Pieper were all mixed up about it. The ELS may have been true to its Norwegian Pietism and stayed where they started, in Enthusiasm. Your laity see through in the insane contradictions of UOJ, but you clergy do not. You chatter on about it, superficially repeating the talking points drilled into you. You really need to have synod-wide studies of the Book of Concord, setting aside the Roman Catholic doctrine of Holy Mother Church. Your sect is not infallible. Your leaders are not infallible. It's time:
  1. To tremble at the Word of God, instead of the footsteps of the DP.
  2. To make Luther the most copied preacher in Lutherdom - instead of Groeschel.
  3. To apologize to the laity for misleading them, exploiting them, and abusing them.
  4. To rebuke, convert, or excommunicate the false teachers.

Faith, the Neos, and the Quasis

 "UOJ is in here somewhere."

The pivotal issue in modern theology is faith, because the modern theologians are against it. As Professor Charles Caldwell said, "Faith without belief," and "Radicalism with a sentimental attachment to the Bible."

The origin? Calvin, his double-predestination, and his rationalism. He was Walther before Walther, which is why LCemessians should not study Calvin. They would see too much of their idol Walther in the Great Calvin.

When I hear Lutheran pastors warn against "making faith a work of man," I am reminded of all those Calvinism liberal apostate theologians. They have their little slogans too, the chief one being, "Do not allow for a contingency, because then grace is no longer grace." A contingency clause starts with if, so the modern theologians and Synodical Conference blind guides emphasize universal grace, universal forgiveness, universal salvation. But that does not mean Universalism!?

Paul did not raise himself to the level of being God's counselors, but these quacks do. So let us look at one verse which endangers their false doctrine so much that they purposefully ignore it. Yes, purpose-driven false exegesis.

Romans 4:24-25 King James Version (KJV)

24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

QED (therefore, it is demonstrated that) - God speaks about forgiveness if we believe. See just a few of the passages in the Bible that address this directly, opposed to UOJ.

On the Biblical side - the Holy Spirit works through the invisible Word of teaching and preaching to bring Jesus and His grace to individuals. The Holy Spirit also works throug the visible Word (the Sacraments) as instruments of God's grace.

The Enthusiasts of Rome, Geneva, Wheaton, and Pasadena do not acknowledge or teachthe efficacy of the Word in the Means of Grace. Therefore, they mill about in confusion about the way in which people are converted to the Gospel, forgiven, and saved.

Almost all modern theologians are neos - they work against faith and deny faith - but they imagine their work is a collection of fabulous wisdom. Although it may be interesting to read the imaginative literature of C. S. Lewis, he was a neo, enchanted with his own views, which are are dog-eared ideas from Calvinism.

Those who identify as conservative Lutherans and even call themselves orthodox or confessional...wait, I have to pause to stop laughing - they are quasi-Lutheran at best. They know a little more about Luther than the average Unitarian, but not much. They just remember a few more talking points from Dogmatics 101. They do not read or study Luther's sermons, which are the key to everything the Reformer did.

Didja ever walk home from junior or senior high school, starved for somethign to eat? We often had donuts in a box, sometimes days old and hard as rocks. El donuts can be harder than granite when left alone a few days. When nothing was immediately available to eat, I warmed up the donuts.  I satisfied my immediate hunger, but that was not exactly nutrition.

The Quasi-Lutherans are always looking for something, because they utterly neglect Luther and the Confessions. They see their Calvinistic Bible (probably NIV or ESV) as their guide, and grab anti-Means of Grace material as their snackfood.

On vacation in Florida, in the old days, my parents got lower and lower in cash. We were only eating fast food on the way home to Moline. What seems to appealing gets tiresome in time. Even as a kid I missed having a real, home cooked meal. Could that be the reason so few people want to sit through another amateur music hour, another meal of spiritual Twinkies and Diet Dr. Thunder?
"We have apprehended the Justification by Faith rebel, Lord Vader. He is resisting arrest, so we will have to make him a little more eager to listen to your wisdom."

Beware of Knocking "Faith as a Work of Man"

John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

As anyone can plainly see, believing in Him is connected to the Bread of Life, never hungering, never thirsting.

Eating three donuts will make someone hungry for three more. Donut ask how I know.

Oregon Wrote:
Finally got free read the post after a busy day.  Thank you for writing this, because if seems like lecture notes to me, and I have always wanted to learn.

GJ - "When I hear Lutheran pastors warn against "making faith a work of man," I am reminded of all those Calvinism liberal apostate theologians. They they" have their little slogans too, the chief one being, "Do not allow for a contingency, because then grace is no longer grace." But that does not mean Universalism!?"

When I was reading this, I was reminded of Luther's "Bondage of the Will" (but I rather liked the more literal Latin On the Enslaved Will.).  Certainly it was written primarily as a rebuke to Erasmus, but it could be a rebuke to Calvin as well because Luther speaks of the the only freedom we have...which does allow for thatif.  It's just not the if that Erasmus wanted, and it certainly wasn't one that Calvin wanted to hear either.  It is a mystery, and the synodical conference seems to have fallen into that old trap of taking a position to comfort their sense of logic.  Luther knew better; he didn't take either side-- rather he rested on faith in the scriptures.  Again this fear of "if" is just as bad making faith a work of man.  Chocolate or vanilla; heresy is heresy.

GJ - "Although it may be interesting to read the imaginative literature of C. S. Lewis, he was a neo, enchanted with his own views, which are are dog-eared ideas from Calvinism."

A good point!  Although C.S. Lewis is insightful, I've learned to read him with care.  He is indeed Neo, along with many others in the 20th century.  Barth might be considered one....if we knew who Barth was.

GJ - PS Lewis has Aslan, the Christ figure say that people are saved by their own religion, so faith in Aslan is not necessary, which is commonly "confessed" by all ecumenists, dabblers, and rationalists.

 ---

GJ - "The Quasi-Lutherans are always looking for something, because they utterly neglect Luther and the Confessions. They see their Calvinistic Bible (probably NIV or ESV) as their guide, and grab anti-Means of Grace material as their snackfood."

Sad but true.  It could be because by and large American Evangelicalism is Arminian, and so they distinguish their brand by separating themselves from that.  It is indeed sad and true about Luther and the Confessions.  Certainly we'll hear about Luther, but only as the reformer (What a great guy he was!  So brave!), but never about the body of his work and that of the reformers.  The confessions never saw the light of day in Sunday School in all my years except in very short anecdotal snippets when they were handy to support a point being made.  They were never drawn upon as source material as they were intended when written over 400 years ago.

One donut to rule them all?  Perhaps that's why they need a bishop?

I had to comment on the previous post as well (from the archive).  It addressed in my mind what UOJ does, or put it another way the "The Marks of UOJ in the Church:"

GJ -
7.  UOJ uses the terms "all are saved" in many different documents, so the Universalism is already there, though hidden behind the fig-leaf of you gotta believe it.

8.  UOJ is Antinomian, teaching that the Law no longer exists, but you adherents are especially legalistic, making up more rules than the famous rabbis of old - not that the rules ever apply to you.

I've witnessed these two personally.  #7 is interesting because on the surface it looks like JBFA, but what do you "gotta believe?" That's they key.  And #8 is especially true.  They almost come out and say it.  I would always say, your Gospel has no value because what do we need it for?

GJ - You are conservative Pietists, you complainers, while they are the liberal Pietists.

Can you develop this further?  I always observed they always seemed so pious, even without the law.  And, I'd like to know more about the linkage to Calvin.

WELS never admitted to the entire synod that they had a District President in the state prison for decades of abuse.

How can anyone read this without laughing out loud?

GJ - Update on 7 and 8.
First of all, UOJ teaches Universal Absolution without Faith and then defines Subjective Justification (following Walther and Stephan) as accepting, or making a decision for this Absolution without Faith. That sounds like, "Don't say yes until I finish talking!" They wipe out faith in Christ and remove trust in the Means of Grace, replacing the Biblical message with infatuation with their wisdom. That is exactly what Luther says about Enthusiasts - they do not trust the Word but fill the world with their words. The WELS Holy of Holies, the Essay File, has 60 or more essays promoting this World Absolution without Faith.

Pietism is a blend of Calvinist substance and Lutheran style.

Hoenecke has a great definition of Pietism - roughly "confusing justification with sanctification and making sanctification the cause of justification."

UOJ pretends to be all grace, but all the UOJists I have known are pathological liars, legalistic Antinomians. They are legalistic by insisting that their view of sin is the right one, although it has nothing to do with the Ten Commandments. Clergy adultery is bad, but not among their friends. Notice how Hochmuth was absolved publicly (without contrition, without faith) by Blind Guide Mark Schroeder . However, the same Mirthless Mark helped kick out Rydecki for teaching Justification by Faith. Legalistic Antinomians teach their law - at least for the moment - is binding, but all sins are forgiven in advance - if the circumstances favor them - in the name of unversal grace.

And to seal the irony, sanctimonious Schroeder and Hochmuch had previously condemned ELCA for their approval of homosexual marriage and ordination. I have that posted on the blog, because I knew WELS would make it disappear - and they erased it wherever it might be found in WELSland.

DAY OF CHRIST’S ASCENSION INTO HEAVEN.

SECOND SERMON.

KJV Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their  unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Christ Upbraids his Disciples with their Unbelief, and his Missionary Commission

1. In today’s Gospel there is again presented to us the essence of a Christian life, namely faith and love; just what you constantly hear in all the Gospel lessons. Since the Gospel ever holds up before you this theme, we must continually preach and discuss it; for Jesus says to his disciples: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to the whole creation. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” We will consider the thoughts of this Gospel text in order.

I. CHRIST UPBRAIDS HIS DISCIPLES WITH THEIR UNBELIEF.

2. First, Christ upbraids his disciples with their unbelief and hardness of heart, and reproves them for it, and shows them their faults. He does not reject them, nor deal too severely with them, but reproves them; just as we would say to a person: Are you not ashamed that you dared to do such a thing? Meaning thereby to bring him to a knowledge of himself and make him blush with shame, that he may desist from his wicked intent or deed, though we do not reject him, nor turn our love from him.

3. However, it is not an insignificant matter here that the Lord rebuked the disciples; for unbelief is the greatest sin that can be named. Christ tells them the cause of their unbelief when he says that their hearts are hardened, yet he deals mildly and gently with them.

4. This is given to us all for our comfort, lest we despair when, lacking in faith, we doubt, stumble and fall; it is to help us to rise again, to strengthen our faith and lift up our hearts to God, that we may grasp and hold fast the confidence of God, who does not deal with us severely, but can indeed bear with us and overlook much. And whoever believes him to be thus, shall find him so; if we hold him to be a merciful God, he allows himself to be found merciful, and shows himself thus to us; but a bad conscience and an unbelieving heart have no such trust in God, but flee from him, and deem him a harsh judge, which he, therefore, is found to be.

5. So should we also deal with our neighbor. If we see him fall from the faith, or err and sin, we should not strengthen him in his wickedness, nor justify his cause, but admonish him, and in meekness reprove his faults, yet neither hold enmity, nor turn our love from him. Thus St. Paul speaks to the Galatians: Brethren, even if a man be overtaken in any trespass, ye who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Galatians 6:1.

But our lord pope, the bishops, priests, monks and nuns allow no one to reprove them when they do evil; they are never willing to acknowledge that any fault is theirs, but always that of their subjects, and their policy toward subjects is one of strictness and severity.

6. To sum up all: We should expose and reprove what is wrong, and exercise truth and love toward everybody; we should be plain-spoken, not letting ourselves be silenced, for none of us, since we are flesh and blood, will so live as to be found without blame in all things. I in this, you in that.

We all see, that even the apostles were lacking in the chief things yet they were corner stones, the foundations and the very best part of Christendom.

7. But let no one think that the apostles were altogether unbelieving; they believed what was written in the Law and the prophets, although their faith was not yet perfect. There was a faith there and yet no faith; they did not yet believe all things, although they believed that God created heaven and earth, and was the Maker of every creature. So the apostles were not altogether without faith, for they had faith in part. Faith is a thing that always grows. It is with faith as with a man who is ill and begins to get well — is increasing in strength. Therefore the Lord shows where they did not believe, and what they lacked; it was that they did not believe the resurrection of Christ from the dead. Although they believed the other things, they were still lacking in this. I hold that they believed that they had a gracious God. Yet this was not enough; they must believe also the resurrection of Christ. The Lord upbraided them with their unbelief, reproved them and said that in spite of all they had seen, they were not believing, they still lacked in a certain article of faith, namely the article on the resurrection. Hence Christ’s words to them at the Last Supper: “Ye believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1.

8. What does it mean, then, to believe the resurrection of Christ, this thing which is so important, and concerning which the disciples were called unbelieving and faithless, and without which nothing else that they believed would help them? To believe the resurrection of Christ, is nothing else than to believe that we have a Mediator before God. Who is Christ, who makes us holy and acceptable to God the Father. For man’s possesions, by birth and nature, are but sin and corruption, by which he brings down upon himself the wrath of God. But God is eternal righteousness and purity, and therefore, from his very nature, hates sin. Hence there is always enmity between God and the natural man, and they cannot be friends and in harmony with one another.

9. For this cause, Christ became man and took upon himself our sins and also the wrath of the Father, and drowned them both in himself, thus reconciling us to God the Father. Without this faith, we are children of wrath, able to do no good work that is pleasing to God, nor can our prayers be acceptable before him. For thus it is written in Psalm 18:41: “They cried, but there was none to save; even unto Jehovah, but he answered them not.” Yea, even our noblest deeds, by which we had thought to obtain from God mercy, help and comfort, are counted to us for sin; as the prophet says, <19A907>Psalm 109:7: “Let his prayer be turned into sin”; seeing God could not be reconciled by all our strength, for there is truly no strength in us.

10. Therefore Christ must come, that he might go before the Father’s face, reconcile us to him, and obtain for us everything we lacked. Through this same Christ we must ask of God all we need. You have heard in last Sunday’s Gospel that the Lord says: “If ye shall ask anything of the Farther, he will give it to you in. my name.” Whatever we obtain from God, we must receive through this Christ, who has gained for us a merciful Father. For Christ is our support and refuge, where we may hide ourselves, like the young chickens hide under the wings of the mother hen. Through him alone is our prayer acceptable before God and through him is it answered, and we obtain the favor and mercy of the Father; for Christ has made atonement for our sins, and an angry judge he has changed into a gracious and merciful God. To believe in the resurrection of Christ means, then, to believe, as I said, that Christ has taken upon his head our sins and the sins of the whole world, also the wrath of the Father, and thus drowned them both in himself, whereby we are become reconciled with God and altogether righteous.

11. Now, observe for yourselves how few Christians there are who have this faith, by which alone man is freed from his sins and becomes entirely holy; for they believe not in the resurrection of Christ, that their sins are taken away through Christ, since they attempt to become holy through their own works. This one runs to a cloister, that one becomes a nun, one does this, another that, in order to be free from sin; and yet they always say they believe in the resurrection of Christ from the dead, notwithstanding that their works prove the contrary.

12. The apostles have insisted upon and preached this article more than any other; thus St. Paul speaks to the Corinthians: “If Christ hath not been raised, then is our preaching vain, your faith also is vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:14. And shortly, after in verse 17 he says: “If Christ hath not been raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.” What sort of a conclusion is this? What is its logical analysis? This: If Christ be not risen from the dead, then sin and death have devoured and slain him, and we cannot get rid of our sins ourselves. Jesus Christ took them upon himself, so that he might tread under foot sin, death and hell, and become their master. But if he be not risen, then he has not overcome sin, but has been overcome by sin. Also, if he has been overcome by sin, then he is not risen: if he be not risen, then he has not redeemed you; then you are yet in your sins.

Likewise Paul speaks to the Romans: “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt he saved.” Romans 10:9. There to all the Scriptures of the Old and the New Testaments agree.

13. Now, it is not enough that we believe the historic fact of the resurrection of Christ; for this all the wicked believe, yea, even the devil believes that Christ has suffered and is risen. But we must believe also the meaning — the spiritual significance of Christ’s resurrection, realizing its fruit and benefits, that which we have received through it, namely, forgiveness and redemption from all sins; we must believe that Christ has suffered death, and thereby has overcome and trodden under foot sin and death, yea, everything that can harm us, and is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven as Almighty Lord over sin and devil, death and hell, and all that harms us, and that all this took place for our good. This the wicked do not believe.

14. You see how much depends upon this article of faith on the resurrection. We can better dispense with all the other articles than with this one. What would it avail if we believed all the other articles, as that Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, died and was buried, if we did not believe that he arose again? It is to this subject that God has reference in Habakkuk 1:5, when he says: “I am working a work in your days, which ye will not believe though it be told you.”

15. The importance of this subject is also the reason that Paul has urged and preached it, and in all his epistles has treated of no work or miracle of Christ so frequently as of his resurrection. He is silent concerning the many works and wonders of Christ, and preaches and teaches emphatically the benefit and the import of the resurrection of Christ — what we have received from it. No other apostle has portrayed Christ to us in the light that Paul has. Christ did not without meaning say of him to Ananias: “He is a chosen vessel unto me to bear my name before the gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel; for I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” Acts 9:15-16.

16. Now, no good work will help those who do not have this faith in the resurrection, let them play the hypocrite as they will. To virgins, their virginity or purity is no help; nor to monks, their long prayers. Here it avails nothing to preach of works, they are not even named; but everything must be obtained of God through Christ, as you have heard. So David prayed in Psalm 84:9: “Behold, O God, our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.” This is enough on the first part of this Gospel.

Now follows in the text the words: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to the whole creation.”

II. THE MISSIONARY COMMISSION CHRIST GIVES TO HIS DISCIPLES.

A. THE CONTENTS OF THIS COMMISSION.

17. What shall they preach? Nothing else, he says, than just that I am risen from the dead and have overcome and taken away sin and all misery. He that believes this, shall be saved; faith alone is sufficient for his salvation.

Therefore, the Gospel is nothing else than preaching the resurrection of Christ: “He that believeth shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” Here all works are abolished. Here you see, also, the nature and character of faith. Faith will compel no one to accept the Gospel, but leaves its acceptance free to everyone and makes it a personal matter. He that believes, believes; he that comes, comes; he that stays out, stays out.

18. Thus you see that the pope errs and does the people injustice in that he ventures to drive them to faith by force; for the Lord commanded the disciples to do nothing more than to preach the Gospel. So the disciples also did; they preached the Gospel, and left its acceptance to those who would take it, and they did not say: Believe, or I will put you to death.

19. A question arises about this passage, “Go ye into all the world,” as to how it is to be understood, since the apostles certainly did not visit all the world. No apostle came hither to us; and many a heathen island has since been discovered, where the Gospel has never been preached. Yet the Scriptures say: “Their sound went out into all the earth.” Romans 10:18. Answer: Their preaching went out into all the world, although it has not yet come into all the world. This going out has been begun and continues, although it is not yet completed; the Gospel, however, will be preached ever farther and wider, until the judgment day. When this preaching shall have reached all parts of the world, and shall have been everywhere heard, then will the message be complete and its mission accomplished; then will the last day also be at hand.

20. The preaching of this message may be likened to a stone thrown into the water, producing ripples which circle outward from it, the waves rolling always on and on, one driving the other, till they come to the shore.

Although the center becomes quiet, the waves do not rest, but move forward. So it is with the preaching of the Word. It was begun by the apostles, and it constantly goes forward, is pushed on farther and farther by the preachers, driven hither and thither into the world, yet always being made known to those who never heard it before, although it be arrested in the midst of its course and is condemned as heresy. As we say, when one sends a message, the message has gone forth, although it has not yet arrived at its destination, but is still on its way; or as we say that the emperor’s message is sent to Nurenburg, or to the Turk, although it has not yet arrived so we are to understand the preaching of the apostles.

B. THE PROMISE ATTACHED TO THIS COMMISSION.

21. But there arises here another question from this passage of today’s Gospel, “He that believeth, shall be saved:” whether faith is sufficient for salvation, and alone saves; or whether we must also do good works in order to be saved. Here our highly learned doctors have desired to control the Holy Spirit, to sharpen his tongue, and to place a little stick under his tongue, as if he could not speak plainly, and have forced and strained this passage, and so worn it out and rent it that no marrow nor vitality remains in it. They have said that good works are necessary to faith, and that faith is not sufficient for salvation. This is not true. Faith alone, of itself, without any works, as the Word of God here clearly says, brings us salvation, and works help nothing at all toward righteousness or salvation. We must let this passage stand pure and unadulterated, and without any addition. If the Holy Spirit had so desired, he could easily have said different words thus: “He that believeth and doeth works, shall be saved.” But he did not do this, therefore we should and will leave it as it is.

22. This I say to the end that you may fortify yourselves with such passages, holding to the true meaning of the words. Though there are many passages in Scripture teaching that faith alone saves, yet they have been so covered over and obscured, so shaken to pieces and stretched, by the sophists and scholars, that their right meaning has suffered. St. Paul says to the Galatians: “If righteousness is through the Law, then Christ died for naught.” Galatians 2:21. That is to say: If we can be saved in any other way or work out our salvation, then Christ has died in vain; for to presume to be justified by the Law means to think that man can become righteous through his works.

23. Therefore to conclude: The chief righteousness is faith; the chief wickedness is unbelief. There is also no sin so great that it is able to condemn man; unbelief alone condemns all who are condemned. And again, only faith saves every one; for faith alone deals with God, no works can appear before him. For works have to do only with man, and man lets his works be made use of as he has made use of Christ’s. They make no one holy; they are only the distinguishing marks of a man that has already become righteous through faith, which alone makes the heart pure.

24. I can easily assent to the saying: Works do not make you pious, but show that you are pious; or when I hear it said: He that believes, serves his neighbor, I admit that it is so. But that the explanation of this text should be, Faith is not sufficient for salvation, we must also do good — this is a liberty which the text can stand just as little as this church could stand that I should pull down its pillars. There follows further in the text: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.”

25. God has always accompanied his Word with an outward sign to make it the more effective to us, that we might be strengthened in heart and never doubt his Word, nor waver. Thus he gave Noah the rainbow in the heavens as a sure sign that he would keep his promise and not destroy the world by another flood. The rainbow is, so to speak, a seal or sign to Noah and to us all, just as a seal upon a letter certifies the document. And just as a nobleman has his own coat-of-arms of a particular device or color, by which he is known, so has God evidenced his words for us with signs, as with a seal, that we should never doubt. To Abraham he gave the rite of circumcision, to show that Christ should come and bless the world. Thus has he done here, adding to this promise of his — “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” — an outward sign, namely baptism, and also the sacrament of the bread and the wine, which was especially instituted for use in times of temptation, and when death draws near, that by it we might strengthen our faith, and remind God of his promise, and hold him to it.

26. A man can believe even though he be not baptized; for baptism is nothing more than an outward sign that is to remind us of the divine promise. If we can have it, it is well; let us receive it, for no one should despise it. If, however, we can not receive it, or it is denied us, we will not be condemned if we only believe the Gospel. For where the Gospel is, there is also baptism and all that a Christian needs. Condemnation follows no sin except the sin of unbelief. Therefore, the Lord says: “He that disbelieveth shall be condemned”; he says not: He that is not baptized. He is silent concerning baptism; for baptism is worth nothing without faith, but is like seals affixed to a letter in which nothing is written. He that: has the signs that we call sacraments, and has no faith, has only seals upon a letter of blank paper.

27. Here you see also what is the office of the apostles, to which all the bishops, and those that call themselves ministers, should conform, inasmuch as they boast that they are the successors of the apostles in preaching the Gospel. For the Lord says here, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel.” Therefore, we should not listen to those who do not preach the Gospel. Now our papists come along and quote the passage in Luke 10:16: “He that heareth you, heareth me.” This verse has hitherto been the pope’s sword, by which he has swayed the whole world, and none has rightly understood this passage, which means that teachers are to be obeyed only when they preach the Gospel. So the Lord here inspires the apostles to speak the Gospel, which is his Word. Christ alone is to be heard, and the apostles are but messengers and instruments for this word of Christ. Therefore, here again are condemned pope, bishops, monks and priests, and all who preach something else than the Gospel.

28. But what is meant when the Lord says: “Preach the Gospel to the whole creation”? Shall I preach also to trees and stones, mountains and waters? What would that profit? St. Gregory preached on this text and said that “all creation” means man; that man is one with all creatures — with the angels in understanding, with the animals in sensibilities, and with the trees in growth. We must, therefore, not misuse the text nor make its meaning too literal, for so we shall misconstrue it. The meaning is that the Gospel should be publicly and universally preached, given to all; it should hide in no corner, but be preached freely in all places, as is written in Psalm 19:3-4: “There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world,” The beginning and going forth has been fulfilled by the apostles, but the work is not yet finished; the Gospel has not yet reached its limit, for I know not whether Germany has ever heard the Word of God.

The pope’s word we have surely heard.

29. The Lord here says to the apostles: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to the whole creation,” for the reason that this Gospel may be published to everyone, so that even trees and stones might hear if they had ears, and might bear witness that we have heard the Gospel; and that pillar there might say, I have heard the Gospel preached to you. Thus generally and publicly shall it be proclaimed, and preached in all the world, being withheld from no one, till it reaches the ends of the world, as the Psalm records. So it has now come to us, who are dwelling at the end of the world, for we live close to the sea. This Paul has in mind when he says to the Ephesians: “And he gave some to be apostles, and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ: till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God.” Ephesians 44:11-13. Next, the text speaks of the signs that shall follow faith, and names five signs, one after the other, thus: “And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons;THEY shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any! deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.”

30. How shall we proceed here that we may preserve the truth of the passage: he that believeth shall have power also, and be able to show these signs? For the Lord says all these signs shall accompany them. Now we know that the apostles did not present all the signs, for we read of no other that drank poison than John the Evangelist, and there are no other individual instances. If the passage shall stand literally, then few believers will be cleared and few saints be entitled to heaven; for these signs, one and all, have not accompanied them, though they have had power to work signs, and have exhibited some of them.

31. Some rush on here and explain these signs as spiritual, so as to preserve the honor of the saints; but it will not do to strain the words. They do not carry such meaning, therefore they will not bear such an explanation. It puts upon the Scriptures uncertain construction for us.

32. Others, with equal heedlessness, say that though not every individual has the power and does the wonders mentioned, yet the church as a whole, the multitude of Christendom, has; one may drive out devils, another heal the sick, and so on. Therefore, they say, such signs are a manifestation of the Spirit; where the signs are, there is also the Christian Church, and so on.

33. But these words do not refer to the Church as a whole, but to each person separately. The meaning is: If there is a Christian who has faith, he shall have power to do these accompanying miracles, and they shall follow him, as Christ says, in John 14:12: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do, shall he do a1so; and greater works than these shall he do,” for a Christian has equal power with Christ, is a congregation, and sits with him in joint tenure. The Lord has given Christians power, as is written in Matthew 10:8, also against the unclean spirits, that they might cast them out and heal every disease. Thus it is written in Psalm 91:13: “Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under foot.”

34. We read also that this has been fulfilled. There was once a patriarch in the wilderness, who, when he met a serpent, took it in both hands and tore it in two, and thought no more about it, but said’ O what a fine thing it is to have a clear and guiltless conscience! So, where there is a Christian, there is still the power to work these signs if it is necessary. But no one should attempt to exercise this power if it is not necessary or if need does not compel. The apostles did not always exercise it, but only made use of it to prove the Word of God, to confirm it by the miracles; as is written here in the text’ “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the Word by the signs that followed.”

35. But since the Gospel has now been spread abroad, and made known to all the world, there is no need of working miracles as in the apostles’ times.

If need should arise, and men were to denounce and antagonize the Gospel, then we verily should have to employ wonder-working rather than permit the Gospel to be derided and suppressed. But I hope such a course will not be necessary, and that such a contingency will never arise. For another example: That I should here speak in new languages is not at all necessary, since you all can well hear and understand me; but if God should send me where the people could not understand me, he could easily grant me their speech or language, that I might be understood.

36. Then, let no one, without pressing need, undertake to work wonders, For we read of the patriarchs’ children that they once brought a large number of serpents in their cloaks, and shook them out at their parents’ feet; whereupon their parents reproved them for tempting God unnecessarily. In like manner, we read of many signs that believers have done. It happened once upon a time that one of the fathers by chance got hold of a basilisk. He looked at it, and thereupon exclaimed: O Lord, I must die, or this reptile must! for the basilisk kills by its looks. At once it bursted and flew into pieces.

37. I know not what I shall say about those who venture to do signs where they are not necessary. For example, some drive out demons. But I know that it is a dangerous undertaking. The devil, indeed, lets himself be driven out, but he does not intend to suffer for it; he allows it only that he may strengthen the sign-worker in such error. I would not like to trust him. We have many such instances in our times. I know also of many that happened not long ago.

38. There was a sexton who wished to learn alchemy from the devil, that is, the art of separating gold from sand, and of making gold from other metals. The devil agreed to come to him at the hour of eleven, but the sexton should have on a gown and chasuble. See with what fool’s work the devil goes about! As though he cared much about the chasuble. The sexton went and reversed the hour-glass and noted the hour. At eleven he put on the chasuble. The devil came and knocked. The sexton was afraid and asked who was there. The devil said that the sexton should come at once to the parson and attend the Sacrament. The sexton threw off the chasuble and ran out in haste, but found no one. Then the devil the second time demanded of the sexton to come out. The third time the devil came and said that the parson was awaiting him impatiently; he should come without delay. The sexton then went out, but by this time the hour was past, and the sexton had not on the chasuble. Then the sexton saw for the first time that it was the devil, and wished to hurry back to the house and get the chasuble. The devil, however, would not allow this, but said: No, my dear fellow, the time is past. He seized the sexton, broke his neck and threw him to the ground. Such occasions the devil seeks, and acts. So much for this Gospel.

KJV Acts 1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. 5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. 6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Amen.

Ascension

O Jesus Christ, Thou almighty Son of God, who art no longer in humiliation here on earth, but sittest at the right hand of Thy Father, Lord over all things: We beseech Thee, send us Thy Holy Spirit; give Thy Church pious pastors, preserve Thy word, control and restrain the devil and all who would oppress us: mightily uphold Thy kingdom, until all Thine enemies shall have been put under Thy feet, that we may hold the victory over sin, death, and the devil, through Thee, who livest and reignest with God the Father and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Ascended into Heaven

KJV Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

The opening of this lesson shows Jesus doing what He said the Holy Spirit would do - convict the world of sin. He upbraided them for their lack of faith. They heard from various witnesses before they believed in the resurrection of Jesus.

We tend to run all those incidents together, and they were not so far apart. But the women at the tomb knew first. The disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) came to the gathering in the locked room. Thomas missed the first appearance, saw and touched Jesus a week later.

Everyone is a mirror of ourselves. They heard all the Promises, and they had faith in Jesus. However, although they were taught what would happen during His suffering and death and resurrection, their senses, fears, and doubts overcame them. So often, where are we when plagued with doubts, with despair?

Hardness of Heart
We can be so skeptical of the truth that we do not believe witnesses who know the truth. Sometimes this is a difficult concept for people to grasp - God's Word hardens and blinds them. The reason is their obstinate rejection of the truth. 2 Thessalonians is very clear. The Age of Apostasy will be so dark that people will favor evil over goodness and delight in doing that evil.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away (apostasy) first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

How bad are things today? The Pope opposes the most basic articles of faith. He is sponsoring a conference on TM, with Katie Perry speaking as an expert.

Receive is used in the New Testament as a synonym for believing. The Gospel Word is preached and taught - they hear it and do not receive it, that is, act as if it applies to them or is the truth. Many excuses are made up as reasons for the non-reception of the truth. This grows the hardness, not that God is evil and damning. His will is that all be saved, but many fall away, many angrily reject the Word, and many become antagonistic because (as clergy) they are cynical.

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Although He convicted them of the sin of disbelief, Jesus also charged them to go into the world and proclaim the Gospel to everyone. That is why Luther describes this passage as focusing on faith and love. In faith they go out, showing their love of the Savior and their love of their neighbors.

Church work is very much like gardening. Some of it is deliberate and planned, such as having regular duties and services, setting aside time for study and writing. But other aspects are completely random or at least unplanned. Ironically, many plans have one aim and yet they have another ultimate conclusion.

One day Mr. Gardener was dividing up his hosta plants and gave me a bunch of them. They were the smallest individual ones, but I knew they would thrive along the house where I had drip watering. I was trying all kinds of ways to attract hummingbirds without mixing sugar water. I did not see much activity until the hostas bloomed in our yard and next door. Hummingbirds love hosta flowers, I soon learned.

In looking around at various ways to fill in the rose garden, it seemed a good idea to bring them into more sun and give them more attention. The thin little plants turned into masses of plants and roots. I could not separate them with a shovel, so I dropped each hosta mass into a divot in the rose garden. All of a sudden, hosta plus roses seemed logical, especially since my wife loves both.

I see the same things going on in church. I planned on blogging just to express myself on Lutheran topics to a few dozen friends. From that has grown many different activities, from the broadcasts to books to classes. The Gospel itself promotes those actions and conclusions, which never really have an end.

We can look backwards 100 years and see all the ways in which the denominations abandoned the Scriptures. What began even earlier in secret is now dominant. But that is not a problem for the Word of God. If everyone hears the Word of God from a faithful source, God will accomplish His purpose, and prosper His purpose.

Someone wrote to me yesterday and said I saved his life, because I wrote about religious abuse.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Luther:

Here is a simple yet profound teaching. Compare it to the notebooks at church conventions. No, really do that. This one verse is the work of the Holy Spirit/Church/Word. A convention workbook is a lot of chaff.

This verse combines the Word and Sacrament. The earliest converts were adults who were baptized with their children. One reader wrote to me, "I cannot believe you omitted this from your list of UOJ refutations." Of course the whole Bible refutes UOJ, and I was writing the ones I thought up first.

Faith in the Gospel leads to Holy Baptism of the adults because they want the Promises in the Visible Word. The priority belongs to faith, because he who does not believe is damned. In my opinion, that is another reason for the ending of Mark to be dropped into the footnotes (RSV, NIV, etc)

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Signs are miracles, so that does not mean that every single person experienced these miracles. One sect made handling rattlesnakes as their sacrament, but that is clearly tempting God. Fortunately, the sect has not grown at all. Even those taped doing so without harm have bad experiences later.

Exorcism has been a practice of Lutherans, and visiting the sick, shut-in, and hospitalized is an important part of congregational work. Why not believe God will help in healing? Experience shows that prayers are answered in many wonderful ways.

19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

As Luther says, all preaching is really about the resurrection of Christ. Our biggest fear is death, and with that fear - lack of purpose. Christ shows us that He is already the conqueror of death, and that we are victors through faith. That means every single believers has a special, divine purpose.

It is easy to list obvious sins, which are so apparent today, many of them so shocking one can hardly believe, even with the proof posted. But the foundation of that evil is unbelief. Faith in Christ modifies and fills our being with the effect of the Gospel in all parts of our life. It is like leaven, which works slowly, not like the instant insulation foam of the chemical industry. I used the magic foam in a gap in a new chapel, as I was told. I put in a little, then a little more, then a little more. And it came out of that void like an alien from Alpha Centuri.

God works slowly through the Word, but it is always the Word of the Gospel. We believe and are tested and find it is our Savior not our talents that is our strength. He is the Hero that fought the battle against Satan and death and therefore understands the frailty of our human nature.

Notice that Jesus did not say to the disciples, "You hid! You locked the doors!" Instead, He addressed their lack of faith and hardness - refusal to believe what was openly witnessed. When society is filled with Christian Faith, weaknesses still appear, but they are addressed with contrition and Gospel forgiveness. Lacking that, evil feeds upon evil and there is no hope.

Getting back to the hosta, we can see how God works. I planted a few tiny hostas around the rose garden. Fall came and leaves were raked onto the rose garden. The original plants, so tiny, disappeared under the coverage. I looked for some this cold, dark spring and saw only the name tags. One appeared and then was perhaps eaten. That was my hope. But it came back - or I saw it better. And a dozen others began popping up, all easy to step on, all easily rabbit food. But in time, they will no longer sleep, but leap, and I will have thick clumps flowering and feeding the hummingbirds.

Thus God's Word works, which seems random to us but fits in His plan.

Jesus took His disciples as they were, addressed their lack of faith, and showed them with miracles that He was indeed the Risen Master, the Son of God. He did not disappear into a rain cloud, as scoffers and sceptics would say in mockery. Instead, He rose into the sky and the Shekinah - the Glory of the Lord - masked His transition to the Right Hand of the Father.

LTRP Note: The following is posted for informational  and research purposes and not as an endorsement of the source or the content. It is not surprising to Lighthouse Trails that the Pope would be drawn to those who teach meditation as he is a contemplative advocate and told the U.S. Congress he considers Thomas Merton a highly significant figure in bringing about world peace (source). But with the Vatican and the Pope openly welcoming Perry and other meditation proponents to the recent “Unite to Cure: How Science, Technology and the 21st Century Will Impact Culture and Society” conference, it certainly sends out a strong message to Catholics and others that meditation plays a major role in solving the world’s problems. Dr. Mehmet Oz (one of Rick Warren’s meditation advisors) and Deepak Chopra were also speaking at the Vatican event."

J Post - For Insights about Current Politics, Look into The Art of War

J Posts are neither secret nor secretive.
The idea is to provide some guidance about the political scene.

I laugh at TV news, which is appropriate. So little can be covered on TV that the networks view it as entertainment in the name of news. Actual journalists are rarer than hens teeth, so I see that title as a warning.

However, the Internet is full of information, some as bogus as CNN, some a mixture of good and bad. No one really knows everything and I do not pretend to - I just try.

I remember a student telling me to read The Art of War, a classic about winning battles, often used by people in business. President Trump knows the book well.

Deception is very important. One important concept is - When you are weak, appear strong. When you are strong, appear weak.

One tactic is to make a lot of noise in one area while developing another front. Trump's tweets take over the news and they are often about nothing important. However, reporters share them with their ain't it awful commentary.

Jeff Sessions was known as "the silent executioner" when he was a prosecutor. Although Trump picked him, various drama events made Trump's opponents back Sessions. Meanwhile Sessions and Trump set up a separate prosecutor and sealed indictments piled up.

Mueller was a Marine officer, an aide to a general. The Marines serve directly under the President, unlike the rest of the military. Mueller could no longer serve as head of the FBI and he was compromised by Uranium 1. So why did Trump interview him for a post he could not occupy? How could someone dig up so little against Trump in all this time?

I believe Trump and Rosenstein were offered a chance for some mercy if they cooperated and investigated the felons in the FBI and the Department of Justice.

Maybe I am completely wrong - but the top floor of the FBI building has been wiped out. Everyone is fired, or resigned, or cooperating with the prosecutors. If that is a war on Trump, the aim is a bit off.

Why aren't we hearing more good news? The Silent Prosecutor knows that cases tried in public are thrown out by judges and juries. Long ago, a union leader was murdered - Yablonski. The prosecution used the death penalty versus life in prison to get the actual killers to expose the people above them, the real culprits.

That takes time, to gather evidence, to offer some mercy in exchange for useful information.

Why don't we hear more? The leakers have been silenced, one way or another.

The Korean War has been an open wound for 70 years or so. Suddenly their nuclear facilities and scientists were gone - from an "earthquake." Missiles stopped flying and peace followed. Could that have happened from a military strike?

There is a list of politicians who no longer want to be in office, both parties, CEOs who suddently want to spend more time with their families. The list is extensive and growing each day.

Child trafficking arrests are enormous and people running "children's charities" are being sent to prison.

Major arrests will come soon and major trials and tribunals will be initiated.

The New York Attorney General said, "I am the law."
Now he is gone. Apparently he was helping in keeping the Huma Weinstein laptop closed and out of the news.

Roses - Myrtles - Late, But Catching Up. My Favorite Addicting Weed Arriving Soon

Easy Does It blooms faster than anything else I have grown,
and it flowers again quickly.

I look for new roses leafing out. Some are still reluctant to green up. But I saw last year's Easy Does It in bloom already, before other roses from last year were budding. I had $5 leftover Easy Does It roses from two Internet sales, so I began searching for its name. The EDI rose seldom photographs well, but it is prolific and produces long stems. The colors vary from pure orange to softer, sunset versions of orange. I have yet to grow a rose that is ugly in bloom, but that is because I avoid buying Ketchup and Mustard.

Ketchup and Mustard, but you guessed that already.

Easy Does It was my choice for cutting roses.

Mr. Lincoln fills the room with a potent fragrance.

Mr. Lincoln is my favorite for fragrance, since it makes up for a bouquet of roses without any smell.

How could I forget the name? I judge the roses by their ability to adjust to our soil, our climate, so photographs of the best versions under the best circumstances tend to inflate the hopes of gardeners.

Falling in Love, pink and white, fragrant.

That happened with Falling in Love, which a future bride was hoping to see again. She was almost speechless about what it was like. Finally I found its label and grew more of them. The next bride at the college loved it as well, so I delivered a vase when that couple became engaged.

I pampered the two-toned CM last year,
and now it is doing well. This photo sold me on it.

Crepe Myrtle - Late to the Party - But Ever-Blooming

The mother of all Crepe Myrtles was ugly this spring, with dried seeds on top and bare branches. Its height made it uglier than the bare roses, which looked grim and dead.

I watered before the big rain, mostly to get the Calladiums started. But I also pruned the Crepe Myrtle - all seedheads, plus many extra branches trimmed away.

Would-be gardeners, gardeners, expert gardeners - God created many plants to be pruned. Every pruning energizes the roots, which promote more branches, leaves, buds, and flowers.

My mother woke us up by wiping our faces with wet washcloths. After one experience, "Wake up" and the sound of running water was enough to make us jump out of bed.

That is the effect of pruning on roses and most bushes. When I am outside, I look for seedheads and dead wood to prune away. For a new Crepe Myrtle, that might be one inche from the end. If a new rose has not leafed out, more pruning and rainwater will help.

There is no point in calling the Waaahmbulance, bemoaning what is not growing. Every year is different, bringing surprise good news and bad news. A little bit of effort, year after year, pays off.

Some basic rules based on Creation:

  • No toxins outside.
  • The humble flowers of the garden host the most beneficial insects, which eliminate the need for toxins: daisies, tick seed, mints, sunflowers, members of the carrot family.
  • All wood products are good for the soil, including tree trunks.
  • Growing roots are the source of 75% of the soil's fertility, so many so-called weeds are actually improviing the soil and worth keeping for a time.
  • Dandelions are herbs. Deal with it.
  • Pruning is the most neglected part of growing roses, which is why so many cry about their non-blooming roses.
  • Roses need elbow room to grow and plenty of moisture.
  • Stored tapwater is better than fresh chlorinated water.
  • Rainwater is best of all, so store that.
  • Coffee grounds are great for plants - eggs shells are for those who believe Internet rumors.

Here Comes the Joe Pye Weed

There are varieties of Joe Pye Weed.

I use the The Growers Exchange for herbs. The plants come wrapped and in perfect shape, still moist. They only sell herbs, but herbs are a good investment.

I kept hearing about this plant in connection with butterflies and started two plants last year. They grew and bloomed fast. The main selling point - butteflies crowded around this plant like crazy and it stayed in bloom, giving off a pleasant medicinal scent.

This spring both plants came up and look ready to bloom again, ahead of the roses.

Readers will notice that certain plants instantly attract specific insects. Sometimes the plants (like daisies) attract overlooked but heroic insects (Tachinid flies). Daisies have the additional benefit of growing in ever-growing mounds. The Tachinids attack aphids, so this all seems planned for the rose garden.

Mountain Mint is a large plant that grows well with no pampering. Its constant habit of blooming means that various insects will have a constant source of food.

I have learned that tiny blooms are favored by tiny insects,
which are beneficial.

Garden Uses - Missouri Botanical Garden

Many people perceive Joe Pye weed to be nothing more than a roadside weed and have never seriously considered its outstanding ornamental attributes. It is a substantial plant which needs space, but when planted in groups or massed can provide spectacular flowering and architectural height. Border rears, cottage gardens, meadows, native plant gardens, wild/naturalized areas or water margins.

Eupatorium purpureum, or Joe-pye weed as most people know it, is far from an unwanted weed to me. This attractive plant produces pale pink-purple flowers that last from mid-summer through fall. It’s a great addition to nearly any garden and a must have for wildlife lovers, attracting a multitude of butterflies with its sweet nectar. Growing Joe-pye weed flowers is a wonderful way to bring a little bit of nature to your backyard. What are Joe-Pye Weed Flowers? Joe-pye weed flowers were named after a New England man that used the plant medicinally for helping people with typhus fever. In addition to its medicinal properties, both the flowers and seeds have been used in producing pink or red dye for textiles. In their native environment, these plants can be found in thickets and woodlands throughout the eastern half of North America. The plants are hardy from USDA Zones 4-9. They reach heights of anywhere between 3 and 12 feet, offering great focal interest when using Joe-pye weeds in the garden. In addition, the flowers have a light vanilla fragrance that becomes more intense when crushed.

Plant Care Today

Using Joe Pye Weed In The Landscape

These native perennials grow easily and well. It also makes a marvelous addition to a butterfly, hummingbird, and bee garden. The flowers smell sweet with a scent reminiscent of vanilla and extremely attractive to these beneficial pollinators.
Joe Pye Weed is especially recommended for those wishing to attract and support Monarch butterflies. Other butterflies, especially those that gets attracted to Joe Pye Weed flowers include black swallowtails and Tiger swallowtails.
Because these plants do grow tall (upwards of 6 feet) and thick, they also make an excellent spring and summertime privacy screen. Planting them in a hedge along property lines makes a smart use.
Also, this plant provides an excellent backdrop for a perennial garden consisting of shorter types of self seeding annuals and/or a bulb garden.
Because these plants blossom in the late summer and into the fall, they can take up where your early bloomers left off. In this way, you can make sure of having pretty flowers throughout the growing season.
If you struggle with damp, low spots in your yard, Joe Pye Weed serves as the perfect choice. It prefers average-to-rich soil and consistently moist, and it does quite well in areas of full sun to partial shade.
Full sun is definitely preferred because plants may grow excessively leggy and limp in light shade. With the right conditions, you can count on this sturdy survivor to grow well for you and provide both beauty and function.

Is It Really a Weed?

The term weed is open to interpretation. Joe Pye Weed comes from the wild and one can quickly consider it as a wildflower. It does grow natively, yet it submits to many positive uses and can make an excellent addition to a typical yard, a flower garden, and a butterfly garden.

Joe Pye Weed As Medicine

In natural medicine, you can use Joe Pye Weed in a number of different ways. The roots are considered especially beneficial and are gathered to be dried, ground and brewed as an herbal tea tonic.
The plant holds a long history of use in Native American and backwoods medicine. You can use the roots, leaves, and flowers of all varieties to create teas that are said to address problems as diverse as:
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Bladder Stones
  • Kidney Stones
  • Rheumatism
  • Impotence
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Gout
The plant contains immune boosting polysaccharides, and stimulating the immune system may help the body to overcome fevers and illnesses on its own.

Dry The Flowers, Leaves & Roots

Sweet Joe Pye Weed with its vanilla scented leaves is the best choice for making medicinal and relaxing teas.
To use the leaves and the stems as a medicinal tea, you should harvest them during the summer prior to the opening of the flower buds. Hang them or lay them out in an area that has good air circulation. When completely dry, you can store them for use as a medicinal tea.
To make a pleasant tasting herbal tea, harvest the flowers and dry them separately.

Medicinal[edit]

Joe Pye (Jopi in the Native tongue), an Indian healer from New England, used E. purpureum to treat a variety of ailments, which led to the name Joe-Pye weed for these plants.[10] Folklore says that Joe Pye used this plant to cure fevers. Folklore also states that American colonists used this plant to treat typhus outbreaks.[11] The author Hemmerly writes that the Indians used Joe Pye Weed in the treatment of kidney stones and other urinary tract ailments.[12] A peer-reviewed study suggests that Joe Pye of plant fame was a Mohican sachem named Schauquethqueat who lived in the mission town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts from ca. 1740 to ca. 1785 and who took as his Christian name, Joseph Pye.[13]

Monarch Flower sounds more appealing than Butterfly Weed, a cousin of Milkweed. Monarch Butterflies need one or the other to attract them. And others like BW.

SUNDAY AFTER CHRIST’S ASCENSION. (EXAUDI).

Text: John 15:26-16:4. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father, he shall bear witness of me: and ye shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.

A Sermon of Comfort and Admonition

1. Beloved, you have heretofore heard much about faith. Today you hear also of the witness of faith and of the cross that follows. Paul says to the Romans, “With the heart man believeth unto righteousness.” Romans 10:10. If one be pious, he must begin in his heart and believe. That serves only unto godliness; it is not enough for salvation. Therefore, one must also do what the Christian life requires, and continually abide in that life.

Hence, Paul adds: “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, thou shalt be saved,” It is these two things that constitute our salvation, faith and the confession of faith. Faith rescues from sin, hell, Satan, death and all misfortunes. Now, when we have this we have enough. We then let God live here that we may reach a hand to our neighbor and help him.

Besides, God desires to have his name praised and his kingdom developed and extended. Therefore, we must praise his name, confess our faith and win others to do the same, so that God’s kingdom may be extended and his name praised.

2. Thus, faith must be exercised, worked and polished; be purified by fire, like gold. Faith, the great gift and treasure from God, must express itself and triumph in the certainty that it is right before God and man, and before angels, devils and the whole world. Just as a jewel is not to be concealed, but to be worn in sight, so also, will and must faith be worn and exhibited, as it is written in 1 Peter 1:7: “That the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire,” etc.

3. Now, by confession I must take upon myself the load of Satan, hell, death and the whole world — kings and princes, pope and bishops, priests and monks. By faith, everything falls that reason can or ever has devised for the salvation of the soul. It must chastise the apish tricks of the whole world, and its jewel alone must be praised. The world cannot endure this, therefore it rushes in, destroys, kills, and says: “It is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not,” as Caiaphas says in John 11:50. Thus, the confession must break forth, that God alone is the Savior; and the same confession brings us into danger of losing our lives. As the Lord says later to the disciples: “They shall put you out of the synagogues.”

4. One cannot paint the cross differently than it is here painted; that is its true color. But the cross of illness — to lie in bed at home ill — is nothing compared with the cross of persecution. The first is indeed suffering: but the suffering is golden when we are persecuted and put to death with ignominy; when our persecutors have the praise; when right and honor apparently are on their side, while shame, disgrace and injustice are on our side, compared with the world that wishes them thereby to have God’s honor defended, so that all the world says we are served right and that God, the Scriptures and all the angels witness against us. There can be no right in our cause, and without trial we must be banished and isolated in shame and disgrace. So it also was the lot of Christ — they put him to death in the most scornful and disgraceful way, and crucified him between two thieves or murderers; he was regarded as chief of sinners, and they said, with blasphemous words: Aye, he called himself God’s Son; let God help him now, if he wills it differently. Since he does not, God and all the angels must be against him. So Christ says in our Gospel, “They will kill you,” and not in an ordinary way, but in an infamous manner, and all the world will say that they thereby offer God a service. It is, indeed, hard to hold and confess that God is gracious to us and that we have a Savior who opposes all the world, all its glitter and shine. But, let the struggle be as hard and sharp as it will, faith must express itself, even though we would like to have it otherwise.

5. Faith must expect all this, and nothing follows its confession more surely than the cross. For it is certain to come to us, either in life or at death, that all our doings will appear to be opposed to God and the Scriptures. It is better that it be learned during life, from the people, than from the devil at death; for the people cannot force it further than into the ears, but Satan has a pointed tongue that pierces the heart and makes the heart tremble.

Satan torments you until you conclude that you are lost and ruined, that heaven and earth, God and all the angels, are your enemies. This is what the prophet means in Psalm 6:7-8, when he says: “I am weary with my groaning; every night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. Mine eye wasteth away because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine adversaries.” It is hard to endure this. Now you see how weak you are who are permitted to bear witness of this faith. One fears his wife, another his children and riches, and a third fears himself.

6. Faith is in vain where it does not continue steadfast to the end. Christ says in Matthew 10:22, and 24:13: “But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. Hence it is better to experience persecution here than punishment at the end. If one flees persecution, there is no faith in his heart — only a dead knowledge or erroneous belief, without sap and strength, marrow and bone; but where there is a true, living faith, it presses forward through sword and fire. Let us now notice how the Lord comforts his disciples. He says: “But when the Comforter is come.”

I. CHRIST’S SERMON OF COMFORT.

7. That we may, under no circumstances, despair, Christ says, I will send you a Comforter, even one who is almighty. And he calls the Holy Spirit here a Comforter; for although both my sins and the fear of death make me weak and timid, he comes and stirs up the courage in my heart, and says:

He, cheer up! Thus he trumpets courage into us; he encourages us in a friendly and comforting manner not to despair before death but’ to cheerfully go forward, even though we had ten necks for the executioner, and says: Aye, although I have sinned, yet I am rid of my sins; and if I had still more, so that they overwhelmed me, I would hope, that they should do me no harm. Not that one should not feel his sins, for the flesh must experience them; but the Spirit overcomes and suppresses diffidence and timidity, and conducts us through them. He is powerful enough to do that.

Therefore. Christ says further: “Whom I will send unto you from the Father.”

8. For he, the Father, is the person that takes the initiative: I am the Son; and from us the Holy Spirit proceeds. And the three persons are one, and one essence, with equal power and authority, as he better expresses it when he says: “The Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father.”

9. That is as much as to say: He who will comfort you is almighty and Lord over all things. How can the creatures now harm us, if the Creator stands by us? Notice how great the comfort of the Holy Spirit is. Now let all the Turks attack us. As long as he is our guard and rearguard, there is no danger. John also says in his first Epistle,1 John 3:19-20: “Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him; because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.” Likewise, in the following chapter, verse 4, he says: “Ye are of God, my little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.” So the Lord now says, Him will I send unto you, so that nothing can harm you. Is not that liberal comfort? Who would not be fearless and cheerful in view of this?

And Christ calls him “The Spirit of truth;” that is, where he is and comes there is a rock foundation through and through, the real truth. Neither falsehood nor hypocrisy is there, for the Spirit is not hypocritical. But wherever he is not, there is nothing but hypocrisy and falsehood.

Therefore, we fall when the test comes, because the Spirit of truth is not present. Christ now further says: “He shall bear witness of me.”

10. That is, if he is in the heart he speaks through you, and assures and confirms you in the belief that the Gospel is true. Then, as a result, the confession of the Gospel springs forth. What, then, is the Gospel? It is a witness concerning Christ, that he is God’s Son, the Savior, and beside him there is none other. This is what Peter means when he says: “Ye are a royal priesthood, that we are elected thereto, that we preach and show forth the excellencies of Christ.” 1 Peter 2:9: Hence, there must always be witnessing. Witnessing loads upon itself the wrath of the whole world.

Then the cross follows, then rebellions rise, then the lords and princes and all who are great become angry; for the world cannot hear, nor will it tolerate, this kind of preaching. Therefore, the Gospel is hated and spoken against.

11. Reason thinks: Aye, one can, nevertheless, easily preach the Gospel in a beautifully simple and plain way, without a revolution in the world, and then it will be heartily welcomed. This is the utterance of Satan; for if I believe and say that faith in Christ alone does and accomplishes all, I overthrow the monkey play of the whole world; and that they cannot allow. Therefore, Christ’s teachings and man’s teachings cannot stand together; one must fall. Priests and monks, as they are at present, are dependent in name, character and works upon human institutions, which the Gospel thrusts to the ground. Hence, they dare not accept the Gospel, and they continue as they are.

12. Thus, I say that the Christian faith is founded upon Christ alone, without anything additional. The priests will not permit their affairs and institutions to fall; in consequence, seditions and rebellions follow.

Therefore, there must be dissension where the Gospel and the confession of Christ are; for the Gospel opposes everything that is not of its own spirit. If the teachings of Christ and the priests were not antagonistic, they could easily stand together. They are now pitted against one another. As impossible as it is for Christ not to be Christ, so impossible is it for a monk or priest to be a Christian. Therefore, a fire must be kindled. The Lord himself, in Matthew 10:34 and Luke 12:51 says: “I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Then follows in our text: “And ye also bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.”

13. Yes; then, first, when you become certain of your faith through the Holy Spirit, who is your witness, you must also bear witness of me, for to that end I chose you to be apostles. You have heard my words and teachings and have seen my works and life and all things that you are to preach. But the Holy Spirit must first be present; otherwise you can do nothing, for the conscience is too weak. Yes, there is no sin so small that the conscience could vanquish it, even if it were so trifling a one as laughing in church, Again, in the presence of death the conscience is far too weak to offer resistance. Therefore another must come and give to the timid, despairing conscience, courage to go through everything, although all sins be upon it. And it must, at the same time, be an almighty courage, like he alone can give who ministers strength in such a way that the courage, which before a rustling leaf could cause to fear, is now not afraid of all the devils, and the conscience that before could not restrain laughing, now restrains all sins.

14. The benefit and fruit of the Holy Spirit is, that sin will be changed to the highest and best use. Thus Paul boasts to Timothy, when he was converted, that whereas he had lived such a wicked life before, he now held his sin to be so contemptible that he composed a hymn and sang about it thus, in 1 Timothy 1:12-17: “I thank him that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service; though I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief: howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his long-suffering, for an example of them that should thereafter believe on him unto eternal life. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever.

Amen.”

II. CHRIST’S SERMON OF WARNING.

“These things have I spoken unto you that ye should not be caused to stumble.”

15. Now that Christ had comforted and strengthened his disciples, he warns them of their future sufferings, in order that they might be able to bear them valiantly. He is an especially good friend who warns one; and the evil visitation is much easier borne when one is prepared beforehand for it.

Christ says: “They shall put you out of the synagogues; yea, the hour cometh that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.”

16. You will certainly experience this; therefore, arm yourself and be prepared. The most of all will be that, when they have treated you in the most shameless manner, they will think they did a good work in doing so, and it will appear to them as if your God had taken stand against you, and they will sing over it a Te Deum laudamus (Lord God, we praise thee), as if they had done God’s will and offered unto him a service. Hence, he arms them here, that they may be of good courage when it comes to pass; and he concludes with the thought that they shall have God’s favor, although at the time there shall be no signs of it; for God does stand on the side of his disciples. He adds: “And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.”

17. Therefore, be patient, be prepared, be firm. See to it that ye, by no means, take offense at me. Remember that I told you before that they have known neither the Father nor me; and therefore they will heap upon you dishonor, shame and persecution. You should never forget this, for it will give you great comfort and make you bold, cheerful and undismayed.

Therefore, Christ concludes the admonition by saying: “But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you.”

18. Who, now, has been considered to be worse than he who told the pope that he knew not the Father? The pope would, of course, declare the contrary and say: Aye, Satan has commissioned you to speak that. Now, they all say that they know the Father. The Turk also says that he does. In like manner, they declare they believe God and the Scriptures. But there are two kinds of knowledge. The first for example, such knowledge as one might have of the Turk from his noise and reputation; the other the knowledge one would have of the Turk through his deeds were he to capture and occupy Rome. In this latter sense we do not know the Turk.

19. It is this first kind of knowledge that some people have of God. They know very well how to say of him: I believe in God the Father, and in his only begotten Son. But it is only upon the tongue, like the foam on the water; it does not enter the heart. Figuratively a big tumor still remains there in the heart; that is, they cling somewhat to their own deeds and think they must do works in order to be saved — that Christ’s person and merit are not sufficient. Thy work is nothing, thy wisdom is foolishness, thy counsel is nothing, thy truth also amounts to nothing, neither does the mass avail anything before God. Then they reply: Aye, the devil has prompted you to speak thus. They say, Christ has truly died for us, but in a way that we, also, must accomplish something by our deeds. Notice how deeply wickedness and unbelief are rooted in the heart. The puffed-up pride of the heart is the reason why man can know neither Christ nor the Father.

20. But to know Christ in the other and true sense is to know that he died for me and transferred the load of my sin upon himself; to so know this that I realize that all my doings amount to nothing. To let go all that is mine, and value only this, that Christ is given to me as a present; his sufferings, his righteousness and all his virtues are at once mine. When I become conscious of this, I must in return love him; my affections must go out to such a being. After this I climb upon the Son higher, to the Father, and see that Christ is God, and that he placed himself in my death, in my sin, in my misery, and bestows upon me his grace. Then I know also his gracious will and the highest love of the Father, which no heart of itself can discover or experience. Thus I lay hold of God at the point where he is the tenderest, and think: Aye, that is God; that is God’s will and pleasure, that Christ did this for me. And with this experience I perceive the high, inexpressible mercy and the love in him because of which he offered his beloved child for me in ignominy, shame and death. That friendly look and lovely sight then sustain me. Thus must God become known, only in Christ. Therefore, Christ himself says to his disciples: “No one knoweth the Son, save the Father; neither doth any know the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal him.” Matthew 11:27.

21. On the other hand, those who parade their own works, do not know Christ. Neither do they know what the Father has done through Christ.

Nor do they know that God is not interested in their good works, but in his Son alone. Thus, they do not know the Father, neither do they know what they have received from the Father, through Christ. Therefore, they must fall and perish, and behold God in his severest aspect — as a judge. They try to silence the judgment with their good works, but they find no good work that is sufficient to do this, and then they must finally despair. When people see that they, themselves, are nothing, and establish the foundation of their hearts upon Christ, esteem him as the highest good, and know God as a Father in death and life — this is to “know God.” Enough has been said on this Gospel. We will pray to God, to give us grace to know him and his Christ aright. Amen.

KJV 1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging. 10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:  27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. 16:1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.  2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.  3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.  4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

Prayer
Lord God, heavenly Father, we give thanks unto Thee, that through Thy Holy Spirit Thou hast appointed us to bear witness of Thy dear Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: We beseech Thee, inasmuch as the world cannot endure such testimony, and persecutes us in every way, grant us courage and comfort, that we may not be offended because of the cross, but continue steadfastly in Thy testimony, and be found always among those who know Thee and Thy Son, until we obtain eternal salvation through the same, Thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

The Spoken Word to Children

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Luther's emphasis was not upon dogmatics books, which is how he was trained to be a monk and priest. Instead, he always advocated teaching by word of mouth. So he called the Christian Church a "mouth church" and an "ear church."

After decades of emphasizing everything but this, and after avoiding any concept of the effectiveness of the Word in the Means of Grace, the apostate leaders are shocked to find their palaces crumbling and the weapons they trusted falling apart. Nothing is so shocking as to be a Midas where everything is gold and therefore useless. Imagine having a treasury with $60 million in it and begging students to attend your failing school. Oh, pick up and leave, join another failing school. That will fix things for a few years. Several mainline seminaries are doing that at once. The "conservative" Lutheran ones are now being visited by the same dread disease - Nowannagothere, Nowannadebt, Nowannaholloweducation.

God arranged for the strength of society to be the family - husband, wife, parents of children - no changing the recipe. Notice all the spiritual wisdom in this one verse, which is poetic in structure.

But when the Comforter is come,
whom I will send unto you
from the Father,
even the Spirit of truth,
which proceedeth from the Father,
he shall testify of me:

The Holy Spirit would be sent from the Son and the Father and testify about the Son.

How is this conveyed? Mothers are with the children most of all in the early years. They are the ones speaking to their offspring about Jesus and teaching them to pray.

Children are all ears in the early years. They want to know everything, and they have a great capacity for learning. Our grandson grilled me on ancient history and Norse mythology yesterday, and he is 12.

So people take this for granted, as if it is a small thing. When we shopped for a tool shed a few years ago, they gave us prices and added, "But you must have a foundation." That doubled the cost and we forgot about it.

Early training is just a foundation, but it is the foundation. That training is so important that the entire Gospel of John is phrased so any child can understand the words, and yet adults will use up 500 to 1000 pages ot explain it all...partially. No one can exhaust the content of the Gospels, let alone the entire Bible.

I remember early Sunday just a bit. My hair had to be sprayed in place, so I enjoyed "breaking" it during Sunday School. My mother wondered why her spray-lacquer failed each Sunday, until I told her decades later. But I do remember another student in that class because he had flaming red hair. Years later he had children, then grandchildren, all with flaming red hair. We met again at the 50th reunion, and we would have shared a table but ours was full. We had the same values, as we discovered on Facebook. That must have come from the foundation being set up so early for us.

If we look at this verse, Jesus does not say, "I am going to teach the doctrine of the Trinity." He simply reveals the Trinity in the simplest possible words, so simple that many geniuses cannot find it at all! (UOJ alert - Knapp)

If someone only knows this verse, how can anyone convince him there is no Trinity? Impossible.

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

The witness about Jesus comes from the disciples who spent three years with Him. This witness was not simply from them, but facilitated by the Holy Spirit. And so parents do the same, the Spirit dwelling in them serves to teach the children about the Gospel.

16:1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

Offended is no longer the intended meaning in this age of everyone being offended or likely to be. It could be phrased - that you will not fall into the trap of unbelief.

Children learn early on about being hurt by circumstances, sometimes by their own actions. So mothers teach them a balance between accept responsibility and expecting injustice. The over-protected become overbearing or as fragile as tissue paper.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

This reality is being experienced all over the Third World. It has been true, but now we know and have the disturbing proof of how prevalent that is. The issue is whether parents teach children to value the Faith above all things. When that happens, it is often the mother who is the example cited.

The point of religious persecution is that those who practice it do so with the assurance they are engaged in wonderful, God-blessed service. That happens within abusive sects, when people are so full of their righteousness that anything done against the Ten Commandments is "justified" to use the term loosely.

There has been and will continue to be soft persecution where nothing is said or done, just a blacklisting of people who are faithful to the Word. If children are not prepared for those attitudes, they will be mystified or simply bend to the expectation they will conform.

When my mother was at the end of her life, she was in a nursing home. Everyone was singing. The song was "Don't Fence Me In." When they were done singing that song, she said, "That's me." Mothers often teach and lead by example.

3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

This is a frequent refrain of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel. Those without faith in Christ, no matter how much they pretend, exhibit the same tendencies. Faith is equated with knowledge, because those who trust in the revealed Word know God's will and His grace in the Savior. That affects what they do and say.

4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

This verse should echo with many mothers. One thing they can count on. Their reputation will grow by 10 times when they are gone and their children miss them. I hear it all the time, because the parents of my friends have passed away. I can think of one or two exceptions. The posts on Facebook are about how much they miss their mother's wisdom, example, faith, and example.

Ecclesia College FOIA lawsuit continues. When Will the Loot Be Returned to the Taxpayers?

Oren Paris III plea-bargained to one count,
but took the 5th at the trial.

Ecclesia College FOIA lawsuit continues:

"A Fort Smith law firm has filed a motion to compel Ecclesia College in Springdale to release its fund disbursements in hopes of discovering details of where more than $400,000 in state Grant Improvement Fund money went.

Jim Parsons, a former Ecclesia College board member and 85-year-old Army Green Beret veteran, first petitioned the private Christian college for the information through McCutchen & Sexton Law Firm in Fort Smith in a February 2017 Freedom of Information Act Violation lawsuit.

It was shortly after Micah Neal, a former state representative from Springdale, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of conspiracy to commit honest services fraud in a case that has so far also ensnared one other former state representative, Jonathan E. Woods, 40, of Springdale, and Randall G. Shelton Jr., a 39-year-old consultant of Alma, in a bribery scheme to direct state funds to Ecclesia College in exchange for kickbacks funneled through the consultant’s business.

Some Ecclesia Inc. documents were provided by Travis Story of Story Law Firm in Springdale to the Fort Smith law firm on April 23. But there were “no canceled checks,” Chip Sexton of McCutchen & Sexton wrote in an email reply April 25 to Story.

“There were no canceled checks or other documents pertaining to the distribution or dissemination of funds from Ecclesia to anyone,” Sexton wrote in the April 25 email to Story.

Story, which represents Ecclesia in the FOIA suit, replied “we still disagree that Ecclesia College is subject to FOIA (Freedom of Information Act).” The Ecclesia defense has been that it is a “church” and not subject to FOIA rules. Sexton argued Friday during a conference call at McCutchen & Sexton Law Firm that although Ecclesia College is a private entity, “it is subject to FOIA because of taxpayer money.”

As noted in the FOIA violation lawsuit, Ecclesia College “is, on information and belief, a college that holds itself out as a church when it is favorable to it to do so and it receives both state and federal funds.”

“I don’t think we got all the records ... I know we didn’t get the records of the disbursement of the funds,” Joey McCutchen of McCutchen & Sexton said Friday. “We filed a motion to compel the records and they still haven’t responded, and I think they are untimely at this point so we’re asking for a hearing to produce those records related to the illegal tax exaction that we’ve claimed.”

Sexton noted that Story has until May 17 to provide the documents under the first request. McCutchen said their claims of illegal tax exaction are being “pared back” because of a 2017 U.S. Supreme Court case involving a Missouri church day care. In that case, Missouri’s decision to prevent a church-operated day care and preschool from receiving funding from a state program was deemed unconstitutional.

The financial information requested by Parsons on Ecclesia could shine more light on the inner workings of a private entity that assists students in obtaining federal student aid. McCutchen said there is at least one other state representatives on the periphery of the Ecclesia College scandal that he holds in suspicion.

State Rep. Bob Ballinger, R-Berryville, a law partner at Story Law Firm who took office in 2013, was the attorney who prepared the deed work for a questionable land deal between Ecclesia Inc. and James and Patricia Hollingworth in December 2013. The closing agent, Elizabeth Middleton, is no long associated with Wilson & Associates in Little Rock and could not be located Friday for further details.

The house and property at 3870 Al’s Drive in Springdale that was sold for $675,000 to Ecclesia College had been valued by the county at $204,600 on Dec. 2, 2013. Ballinger said Friday the reason the land sold for more than three times its estimated value was because of the U.S. 412 Northern Bypass. Ballinger is running for state Senate District 5 against incumbent state Sen. Bryan King, R-Green Forest.

“There was no GIF money at that time,” Ballinger said in relation to the Hollingsworth land purchase by Ecclesia. “No GIF money was involved in that transaction.”"

It is a family business, so it is none of your business where the money went.
